this scene is definitely building the threatening feeling that will keep the reader hooked

as the reader, I am not sure at what time in the past this is taking place - I am guessing it is before Sam went to college because the brothers are still with their dad, but is Sam in High school? Is he a pre-teen? Remember to frame the story for your reader

I enjoy it when you tell the event first from one person's point of view and then again from Sam's Point of View (POV). letting the reader experience the differing POVs is a good device
