“In this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant. Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant." - Elwood P. Dowd, Harvey

Follow your muse. If it delights your heart then it is worthwhile.

I have now been writing these stories for seven years!  And to think, I always thought writing was too hard.  I'd never written anything before I became mesmerized by Supernatural and a certain Dean Winchester. I love exploring Dean's psyche and watching JA portray all the diverse facets of his intricate personality.

I love John Winchester and miss him terribly. He is alive and well in many of my Wee!chester fics and I hope he returns to the show soon in some capacity.  In the meantime, I am loving Bobby.  The boys need a father figure to turn to on occasion.

I love Sam more every day and I am beginning to understand him better and hopefully I do him justice in my fics.  It is the relationships between Dean and Sam, and sometimes Dad or Bobby that makes this show special.

I love seeing Sam and Dean interact with other characters.  Love the bond between Cas and Dean, love the loyalty and brotherly spirit between Dean and Benny.  I want Dean to have other friends and allies he can count on.

And I love the 'evil' recurring characters that test the brothers.  Loved Gordon, love Crowley and I do love how Death sets Dean back on his heals.  It's rare to see a character that intimidates Dean, even though he's loathe to admit it.

But Sam and Dean are and always will be the center of the Supernatural universe.  That's just the way it is and should be!

Family ~ brothers united together to fight the evil in the world.   It doesn't get any better than this!

Okay, I have to review here too, not just because it is a brilliant story, but because I forgot to say I hate you.  Yeah, that's right...so you wrote this in five minutes on your lunch break and I toil for days and come up with bumkus?  Life is certainly not fair.

Oh, and I also love how you have Michael practicing his smile in the mirror, that mirrors Lucifer's scene with Sam where he is looking in the mirror sparring with Sam.

So, well done...exceptionally well done.  And I forgive you, for the five minute thing, 'cause you're an awesome person.

Later, B.J.

Author's Response:

Erm.  Thanks?

Actually, I wrote it in five minutes, but then I spent about half an hour rearranging the sentences so they actually made some kind of sense!!

I'm glad it's coherent though, because I wasn't entirely sure it was!

And thanks for reviewing x 2!

So much said in so few words. I especially like that Sam went to Bobby. Some seem to think he wasn't close to Bobby, but I think he was, just not as typically needy as Dean was.

So seeing him here, drunk with pain and yet stone sober is heartbreaking.  This was really powerful and so real, just what I imagine might have happened even tho I'd never thought of it until your story.

Thanks, B.J.

Author's Response:

Wow - only just realised this review was here or I'd have replied earlier.

I couldn't really see Sam going anywhere else in that instant and we see a lot about how John and Dean feel but it had to hurt Sam too.

Glad you enjoyed it.

Lovely! It is nice to think that John had these moments, times when he focused on his children and realized what was happening to them.

I really liked the line about the freckles on his nose being the only trace of Dean's childhood.  Nice.

Perfect! You really captured Sam's need to feel what he'd done and take responsibility. Sam has always done that, the fear of the wall coming down couldn't stop his need to know and atone for what he did as RoboSam.

I love protective Dean and he was out in full force, willing the outcome to his wants, assuring Sam that everything would be all right. I loved the combination of snark and care, how he pushed Cas to make it all right or at least tell Sam that it would be okay.

The best part was the end where Sam remembers Dean comforting him in the past and knowing that they got through that, together they can get through this.

It really does come down to them always looking out for what the other needs. It is wonderful to see the boys back together and your story showed us that love and caring.  Great job, B.J.

Author's Response: Thanks B.J.  I am so glad Sam and Dean are back together and showing us the care they have for each other.  I still fear Sam is in for a hard road but I really believe they can get through it together.

Totally heartbreaking, but real.  And also expected and not, which is really good.

He is still there, still in Hell, at least in his head. It's not where his soul really is, his soul is here, safe with me.

This line stood out for me, most especially the part about his soul being safe with Dean.  It is so true and why Dean never would have left Sam's soul in Hell. He saved him, even if the wall cracks and Sam cracks.

I've often thought about One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest in relation to the boys and what they would do for each other.  As tragic and sad as it would be, I know that Dean would save Sam from a living death or eternal torment locked in his head.

To think Dean would follow him is disturbing but again real.  They are that intertwined and the love is that great. Yeah, this story gets you thinking about all kinds of scenarios for our boys and so many of them are not good.  The good part is they are there for each other, through it all.

Great story.  You really took it it a fresh direction. - B.J.

I most loved the image of Dean pulling a limp and catatonic Sam into his lap and holding on tight, chest to chest just holding his brother and refusing to let go.  Panicked, protective Dean is a favorite flavor and you captured him.

Then the ending was perfect. A tired, spent Sam being cared for and gently placed in the car, with Dean in overload and finally recovering from his terror to hear those sweet words, Sam asking him if he was okay.  Dean knowing that this was his Sam and that he truly was okay.

These boys...man, they sure to tug at the heartstrings and you captured the moment.  Thanks, B.J.

Author's Response: BJ...I am so glad you liked it.  I thought the tears bringing Sammy around was an intense touch, but something I could actually see happening!  And then, of course, the big brother Dean, well that is just what I live for.  Big smile from your SH buddy here!  D

Awesome story, Jules! I simply cannot get enough of caring Dean touching his brother in all those big brother ways, just holding on and refusing to let go.  Offering his encouragement in bursts of fierce protectiveness and gentle support.

Sam and his guilt, well...it proves Sammy's back. And his flashbacks were agonizing to witness.  Hell truly is hell for our boys.

I love Bobby and his sage wisdom, how the rift is still there trembling around the edges but he is also there for Sam.  And he is so wise!   For Winchesters it certainly would be easier to just give up and die, but they are made of sturdy stuff.

But Sam needs to learn to pick and choose his fights because trouble will always seek them out.  I love Bobby offering him a little hope and another approach.

Loved Dean working out his frustrations and fears on the firewood and then him silently listening and hoping that Bobby could reach Sam and together they could get him to stop kicking at that wall.

So much yummy Winchester goodness in here, I'm sure I'm missing something that struck me as so real and insightful. Lovely story, and quite the fitting finale to our little challenge.  Yep, I just finished reading all the wonderful tags.

Thanks again for the challenge, it was fun and revealing, seeing how each of the writers chose to approach their story.

Oh, and great title and so fitting for our Winchesters, different and yet the same!

Later, B.J.

Author's Response:

Hey, BJ!

Yes, we've been waiting a long time for the return of big brother Dean, haven't we? And it really looks like their bond has survived everything that the universe has thrown at it over the past few years - thank heavens.

And you are absolutely right - Sam shouldering that guilt means that he's really back, soul and all. He's been sorely missed.

I kicked this idea around in my head a bit, and decided that the talk at the end would work far better coming from Bobby, rather than Dean. Bobby has that way of cutting through everything to get to the core of the matter, and doesn't care about trampled feelings while he does it - lol. But it comes from his heart, so that's where the softening comes in.

Thank you so much, not just for reading, for for participating in the fun of the challenge. I know you had your doubts at first as to whether you could squeeze in a tag, but you came through with flying colours, and delivered an awesome read with Burning Bridges.

And you know, that song is still stuck in my head - LOL!

Ah, Vonnie, they are definitely stronger together and if anyone can hold back the fall of that wall, it is the Winchesters!

You captured both boys, how they are stronger when they are fighting for their brother, how their focus always shifts from their own peril to the needs of their brother.

I firmly believe that Dean being there, calling out to Sam is enough to pull him back.

So bleak, so depressing...so possible and real!  This is why Dean is scared to death, why he hovers over Sam pleading with him to leave the wall alone.

I think Dean sees Sam, knows what's in his head.  No one else could, no one else but Dean has been to Hell and back.

I think Dean visits, comforts and if anyone can break thru and take Sammy home, it will be Dean...his brother, his protector, his savior.

Wonderful stuff, you really got me feeling and thinking.  Thanks, B.J.

Liz, I think you got inside Sam's head perfectly.  His determination to do right, to atone for what his soulless self did. The guilt that forever drives him to try and do better.

I most love how it is Dean who pulls him back to safety, Dean that he cries out to for comfort.  Dean that he hears and responds to.

And while Sam might not fully believe it, Dean has totally forgiven him...or not even forgiven because for Dean he doesn't see that other Sam as Sam.  Dean will be there for his brother and is just so relieved to have him back.

I love seeing the boys caring for each other, needing each other and you captured that, and in so few words.  You got to the heart of it.  Great job! - B.J.

Oh, yes...I really liked!  And it is so Sam, exactly what Dean is afraid of.  Sam always wants to do right, wants to right the wrongs he feels responsible for.  It is especially terrifying that a part of him wants to walk away from that wall, run to Dean and the safety of big brother.

But we know Sam, he is inquisitive and a part of him will keep chipping away at that wall.  It's in his nature.  I only hope either Dean can distract him from his need or else Sam can somehow overcome the guilt and terror from when that wall collapses.

You took me on a journey inside Sam's mind and it was both fascinating and terrifying.

Thanks, B.J.

That was really lovely. I love when I read a tag I didn't know I wanted or needed to read and yet it adds to the episode.

I think you did great getting inside Dean's head, how hurt and disappointed he is and how he does see the similarities between Sam and Cas and how he will in the end, be there if Cas will only come around.

I loved him saying that Cas was a brother, and as such, Dean feels the same betrayal and the same loyalty.  They are just at opposing ends at the moment and hopefully they will somehow come back together.

Thanks for a terrific read, B.J.

Thanks you for finding this, even though I had hidden it away on missing scenes! I wasn't quite sure I had got it right as I have only seen this episode the once! I love that Sam knew the skeleton wasn't Monroes from the length of his bones.  Always observant, our Sammy!

Hi B.J.,

Thank you so much for the awesome review and the stars;-) You're right about writing a complete hunt in a thousand words being challenging. Since this was a special edition  of the E/O drabble challenge, I also had less than a week to write it--time constraints always being an issue for major-procrastinator me. I had to describe the mansion and come up w/a history to explain its abandoned state, which fortunately also gave me the bones of a hunt.

Huge apologies for not resonding earlier, this came when I was preparing for my vacation, and then got lost in my email box. Thanks again for the excellent review!

Loved getting inside Sam's head.  And your Lucifer is chilling, exactly the torment Sam would fear the most...lies the devil told me.

I understand Sam 'hearing' that Dean didn't want him around, didn't want to be his brother any more.  Personally, I think Sam was devastated but also understood where Dean was coming from.  For me, I think his greatest fear was that Dean was giving up, on him and on the fight.  That to Sam is terrifying.

I also see Sam fighting more, you showed his despair really well, and I fully understand his despair, but he is also a fighter.  At times like this, his anger strikes hard, at Lucifer and at himself.

The last line was perfect. One last chilling thought that Lucy might actually be in control and relentless, destined to get what he wanted, Sam as his vessel.

I really enjoyed this. - B.J.

Author's Response:

Sam is strong, definitely. I let him freak out a little more here than I normally do because I remember how extremely freaked out he always gets around Lucifer. Sam practically reeks of fear and futility. Wanted to explore that a little.

But you know, then I decided that I wasn't quite done with it. So I'm going to do at least one chapter more, him dealing with this "thing" trying to get inside him.  Should have it up in a few days.

Seriously, Vonnie...like?  I freaking loved this!  It was so awesome, all the emotion, all the truths, all the insight into all our Winchesters! You rocked this tag!

There were so many lines that stood out, I'd be here all night trying to pick out my favs.  Just know that it gripped me and pulled me through their turmoil.  And you perfectly realized the anguish each one felt, and how the overriding concern was always for the others, how they were feeling, how they would cope with the fallout of another Winchester tragedy.

Oh, and I love how you brought in so many past elements and yet kept true to the purpose of your story.  It was especially effective having Sam go all the way back to where he should have died in the nursery instead of his mom.

Truly heartbreaking and yet the resolution was uplifting.  Bobby forgives, just like Dean does, and just like Sam needs to do for himself.

Truly spectacular!  Thanks for the closure, B.J.

This was awesome! It took me on a journey I didn't expect. I love starting out in their childhood 'hide out'. Love that Sam just had to get away and yet Dean knew exactly where to find him. Love that, like the Impala, they still have a safe haven to retreat to.

Their talk was real, full of quiet moments and hard truths, and simply two brothers caring.  There was levity and yet the deeper meaning is still there, always there with our Winchesters.

My boss actually told me she thinks us Supernatural fans read too much into the show and yet this Safe Haven Challenge proves differently.  There is simply so much on screen and so much implied and known just waiting for our fanfic writers to show us further insight into our boys.

It is scary doing tags when everyone is doing a tag.  How can you be different and not just retread the show and the same idea, and yet the proof of our show's awesomemness and the creativity of its fans is how all these different stories can come from the same source and yet be so different.  Each one mesmerizing and enlightening.

Thanks for a terrific read! Later, B.J.

“I’m just trying to say that we all live in our own personal hell. So maybe your brother is right. The least we can do is not carry any more baggage than need be. I ain’t sayin’ it’s easy and maybe it’s even harder on the forgiven than the forgiver, but maybe that’s what those evil bastards want too- just one more way to drive us apart. Or drive us stark raving…”

Bobby is always such a wise old soul, and he is totally right. And with the Winchesters, I think it is definitely harder to be on the receiving end of forgiveness.  They are always hardest on themselves, beating themselves up for what they did and what they should have done.

Dean is the most amazing character ever and yes, I'm with you, his speech stuck with me.  I've always loved that he does what we all strive to do, he cares for his family above all else. And what's truly amazing is he doesn't even see the sacrifice in it.  He truly wants to care for them.

I loved this, how Sam frets over it all, how Dean dismisses it as nothing, and how Bobby puts it all into perspective in his indubitably smart and sassy way.  You hit all of them spot on and gave further closure to a compelling episode.

I think the only character who lost out here, was Rufus.  He was obviously friends with Bobby...family.  And yet he refused to offer himself and Bobby the greatest gift, the simple act of forgiveness.  That's truly sad.

But Bobby has the Winchesters and they all have each other, and that truly is all that really matters.

Wonderful read, Tree!  Let's hope the muse stays close.  We're all gonna need something to keep us occupied over the long drought of summer!

Author's Response:

Thanks B.J!

Its so nice when someone else feels/sees the same things I do - validates my mindset as it were. Sometimes I'm never sure how much of my own personal history I'm inflecting on what I see in the show and then how that might come across in what I write (when I get around to writing... LOL)

I absolutely agree about Bobby. I just cant imagine where the boys would be without him sticking by their side as researcher, surrogate uncle/dad but most importantly, just counselor and plain-talking friend.

I agree that wayyyy too often- these two get so lost in their own heads (Dean in his misguided loyalties and lack of selfworth and Sam is his guilt and strong will) that they miss the bigger picture and are made more vulnerable by their foes.

I'm still hopeful that one of the endings will be a triumphant one for the Winchesters of two brothers (not at odds with each other) but overcoming the enemies set to keep them apart and putting their strengths together to win the war.

Thanks again BJ - I TRULY appreciate you taking the time to read, but even moreso putting together such a thoughtful review.

Oh, Bobby certainly is more like family than Samuel could ever be.

I loved how Dean missed this side of Sam, the emotional side that hurts so deeply, the kid brother that cares so much and that big brother can be there to protect and soothe.

Bobby doesn't have to pretend to be their father.  Somebody ought to and thank goodness they have Bobby who is.

This was a nice way to finish out the challenge.  Amazing how we can all come up with something different and yet the themes are the same, family and love. Thanks, B.J.

I think you perfectly captured Dean's ambivalence toward meeting up with Sam again.  He longed for the warmth and closeness and yet he feared the distance and coldness.  He put on a brave face, but it was heartbreaking when Sam insisted on going back to be there for his interview.

I think Dean wanted to ask him not to, instead he played it cool, like he was fine with traveling that road alone.  Sadly, Jessica's death gave him what he wanted.

Awesome job! - B.J.

Author's Response: Thank you!  It was tough with the challenge limit of 100 words!  I really appreciate your comments and insight:)

You caught the writing bug! Congrats on an awesome effort, really clever and insightful. I never guessed it was Alastair beating Dean (knew someone was!) but when the reveal came it was very satisfying, which is the mark of a good story.

Great job! - B.J.

Author's Response:

Thanks so much for reading and reviewing.  I've been reading fanfic so long here.....I thought I was immune, but I guess I have a wee little muse somewhere in my brain:)

If I said any more it would only detract from your words.

Thank you!

Awesome! I'd never guess it was your first effort at a drabble. With only a 100 words you got the depth of feeling across.

I love that both boys had a shared memory, a small moment in time that touched them both, a moment with Bobby.

Perfect that Bobby called them idjits! Those are the good memories, their family together.

Now...on to your next one!

B.J.

Author's Response: I bow humbly before you.  Thank you so very much....
