Set immediately after episode 4.22. This is my take on how things could have happened. Angsty!Dean, sick!Sam and appearances by Bobby, Castiel and that nasty Zachariah. I wrote this after season 4 was over in the U.S. but since season 5 hasn't started in some places yet, I thought I would go ahead and post it. Hope somebody likes it. :)

  Date: 11/01/10 Title: Chapter 7: Chapter 7 Shame this is finished but I guess the way season 5 has gone precludes taking this idea further (given that you don't like going outside canon!) as this story has still got some potential. However, let's see what the rest of Season 5 brings eh? Kripke did say Sam was going to have problems and we haven't seen much of that yet - wonder if there will be some fireworks on 21st in the aslylum.... PS one typo in Ch7 you have a 'defensives' instead of 'defences'... Author's Response: Yeah, I should get over that thing about writing outside canon, shouldn't I? If I don't hurry up and get Hope Abandoned finished before January 21 I guess I won't have much choice! Thanks for the reviews, AMB! Anyhow, when are you doing the next chapter on this one? It is worth continuing even though you were going on a slightly different journey to Kripke... Author's Response: This one is already done, AMB. I actually thought you had already read it on FF.net. I wrote it right after season 4 was over but thought I'd go ahead and post it here too. I'll probably post the second chapter before the weekend.

Sue Summary: Being four years old didn't stop Dean feeling the impact of his mother's death, or stop him feeling any pain. Dean always the protector, and wiser than he ever gives himself credit for - and Sam still too young to understand other people's pain though he thinks he does. How they both grow from here! Summary: Death was not a stranger to Sam Winchester, but even seeing its cold touch take many fallen people away, didn't grant immunity from the deep ache that accompanied loss. Sam Winchester was scarred, was changed, and it hadn't even happened yet. Only in his reoccuring nightmares.

Date: 01/01/10 Title: Chapter 1: Every Other Breath Phew - that gusto reads more like despair and desperation - and maybe you've got that right because something drove him into Ruby's arms didn't it, in the end when all his efforts failed. So maybe we can actually partly blame Gabriel for pushing Sam so that when Ruby offered something that meant he wouldn't be alone after Dean went to Hell - he took it... Summary: A look at the important lessons life has taught the Winchester brothers. Lesson 5: It’s the things we give away that matter the most. It’s Christmas, and Dean wants to give Sammy a special present. A brotherly moment, wee!Chester style.

Date: 08/01/10 Title: Chapter 1: Chapter 1 I think you captured Bobby's voice beautifully, your affection for him really comes across in this piece. And your idea that Dean could have broken down in that moment and told Bobby the burden John had put on him does ring true. I for one am happy to insert this into the episodes because it is comforting to think at least both boys had a hug from someone who cared, even if they weren't able to reach out to each other just then! Author's Response: Thank you so much. I really do love Bobby. Couldn't believe it when I heard a few months ago that people had been complaining on certain forums that Bobby was getting too much screen time. What the?!?!?!?!?!?!! And the real tragedy was that Jim Beaver found out what they were saying, and felt he had to explain that he'd done the same amount of hours as the previous season. Gah! What is wrong with people???? I sort of felt that Dean wouldn't be able to keep that secret entirely to himself, and Bobby was the likely person he'd trust. But I also thought it would burst out of Dean in a moment of weakness, like just after John's death, because he was still spinning out of control after his father's final words - then to deal with John suddenly dying on top of that.....it was a huge blow for Dean in more ways than one, and I can look back now and understand why he was the way he was in the start of S2. Thanks again - so glad you liked this. Bit different from my norm, but it was one plot bunny that just wouldn't go away. Jules Summary:

It was as if, without him to appreciate her noises, she considered it pointless." Lovely moment of grieving - but I am so glad you restored our boy to all his family, including his baby! And I'm perfectly happy with an angelic resolution for your AU, it is nice to know whatever AU we are in, Dean is destined to encounter Castiel, don't you think? A comforting thought. Summary: How Dean slipped into darkness nine times before he finally woke up.
