Laughed all the way through (apart from the poignant little asides about Mom which brought a tear to my eye as well as Sam's). Thank you so much. Ah, yes, the little reference to their mother - I guessed that would really get to Sam, as I'm sure that even though he never knew his mother, some part of him would still long for her. So glad you liked this so much. Thank you. Jules Summary:

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Date: 24/12/09 Title: Chapter 13: Forebear, He Lives First impressions having read this straight through - gripping, traumatic, emotional. This must have been something like Dean's experiences in Hell, don't you think - that fear and sense of losing yourself, and finding you've done terrible things (though Hell must actually have been worse as that was a choice he made, and then enjoyed the results....). There were a few typos here and there but this was well written, good dialogue in character and some evocative descriptions. Oh and an original choice of villain (very Amercian Gods/Neil Gaiman!). Must read some of your other stuff now! Oh and Happy Christmas...! Summary: Five years after the events in No Rest for the Wicked, Dean awakens to a changed world. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Date: 23/01/10 Title: Chapter 4: Chapter 4 This was very bleak but very good. It is interesting coming to this so long after it was written and after Season 5 is half way through. The series kind of skated over what might have happened to Dean in Hell apart from talking a little bit about Alastair's skill with the knife, but I've always thought there would be worse torments for Dean than just the physical, and I've read a couple of other stories that have explored the kind of mental torture they could have subjected him to for all that time. Letting him think he had escaped and bringing him back could be one - and I liked the way you made this in the end an effort by Sam and Bobby to reach him and let him know he wasn't forgotten. Though, if he were to remember it once he was fully back in Hell again, maybe that would just add to the pain. Very subtle to have his thinking every now and again about how hot he was feeling... a hint that all was not as it seemed.... Summary:

Brooding and massive, like his broad shoulders! This really captures the character, fills in some of the unseen from that little clip they do showing Sam going after the cross roads demon... and makes you feel for him. Maybe helps you understand some of his attitude when Dean does finally return, that drive to be the strong one. Summary:

Love the references that inspired you, I've recently got into T S Elliot and had never realised so many powerful quotes came from his pen, what a poet! And Dylan Thomas' Do not go gentle is my all time fave poem, gives me the shivers every time I read it and is actually perfect for Dean, don't you think?
Author's Response: Hey, thanks! Every time I turn on my computer, there's a new review from you, LOL. It was a tragedy, sure, but it's kind of better than what they had... er... isn't it? LOL Anyway, thanks for reading and reviewing - as always. :) Summary:

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Date: 09/11/09 Title: Chapter 1: And They Call it Puppy Love Phew, well read it all today (should have been working but what the hell). Have to say, this is really very well written from several points of view - the imagery and style leads the reader on at a cracking pace, the detail is great (nice touches in the language use and descriptions leave real strong impressions of those cold dark woods) and the emotion is a really roller coaster. Honestly, left me shaking and tearful - poor Dean, stripped of all defences like that. I'm guessing you did some research on the main topic to be able to convey the mental traumas which in the end far outstrip the physical. Very powerful stuff and I will certainly have to read all of the sequel - while confessing I am hoping for redemption for the boys, as I don't know if I could take too much more shredding of Dean's self confidence!! Author's Response: Yup: all very carefully planned and plotted... I am a medical journalist by trade, so it is all researched very carefully just as you suggest. You're so right about the psychological fallout and it is something that the sequel picks up. I've seen fics of this type that really do skate over the aftermath and wanted to do it justice, which is why I didn't miraculously fix him overnight in the end... it just wouldn't have rung true. It's funny what you say about him having no psychological defenses...a few people have said to me that they found it very harrowing to read and I always wondered why, because I don't whump him as much as some writers! But then it occurred to me that in making him amnesiac I really did strip awayhis 'Dean-ness' and that made him seem particularly vulnerable... but of course, it was necessary for him to fall under tha spell of the Benders and the fantasy family they presented to him. I hope you enjoy the sequel... there are some ups and downs but Dean does confront what happened, and fight back and regain his sense of self... thanks so much for reviewing! ;-) Summary:

And a lovely touch having the Wendigo/Bendigo chuck Kathleen out of the pit thanks to Dean's quick thinking.... Can't wait for the rest... Author's Response: Cackles… I sorta cheated with the pecs since JP wasn’t really as bulky back then! You know, I spent ages trying to work out how the heck Kathleen could possibly swing her leg up over the top of the pit while hanging from a foot of rope and I concluded it was in fact anatomically impossible… hence, it threw her out. Love Bobby in this - how he is so strong, how the deep affection for the boys runs through everything he does for them, especially for dean. Love Kathleen and so glad you didn't kill her off!! I was concerned you might at one point. I had to try and read Ch 21 & 22 slower as you lost me a few times as I got confused as to who was narrating (but I am notoriously bad at reading carefully when a plot is racing, I want to race too). Anyhow, I think I need to read the whole thing from start to finish as reading in pieces at the end was disruptive. Really enjoyed it, thanks for the ride! Author's Response: Well, thanks muchly! Kathleen is definitely safe... in fact my buddy over on FF, cerridwen7777 is writing a story in the verse that includes her and she will also be in my next story in the verse, which updates it to S4 post-Hell... got the usual tangled plot and I started it last night. Should post sometime next year... thanks for your support and encouragement! I really appreciate it! It's amazing how many people have told me Woods is the only story they have ever printed out and read almost as a 'novel' - one reader over on FF tells me she even had it ringbound and designed a cover for it! She's going to do the same with this one. Isn't that awesome?! :-D

Date: 12/11/09 Title: Chapter 18: Dueling Banjos Sorry I haven’t reviewed chapter by chapter but as with the Woods, I have read this straight through, cover to cover (so to speak). Obviously, I am now anxiously awaiting the next and final chapters, still hoping that you will ultimately provide us with some salvation and relief, especially for poor old Dean.
So – likes and dislikes.
Dislikes first to get it over with – just generally, this is so hard to read because it is such an emotional grind, heart wrenchingly horrible thing to have to live through with the characters we know and love – what can I say but aaargh! And you will realise that is a double edged sword – we need the angst to make the story work but man, it is very angsty. I am also uncomfortable with the thought of young Dean giving blow jobs for money even though it is highly feasible that desperate straights could have led to desperate actions – and that is more a reflection of my discomfort with many aspects of real life that are much more frightening to contemplate than any monster of the week than any criticism of the story. Me and Dean are on the same page there – demons I get, people are just crazy…
Likes – the language used is punchy, pithy, full of pulchritude. The characterisation is nothing short of brilliant. You have developed them from where we know they were at this time in the overall SPN story in a totally convincing manner, through the events of this story into some of the aspects of the characters that we can see emerging now in current episodes. Neat.
I love Kathleen fucking Hudak, hell yeah! She was always one of my favourite additional characters. Her interactions with Dean in that episode make the way you have woven her into these 2 stories totally convincing. And you and the boys are quite right – she is Ripley will bells on. I do hope you haven’t dropped her on her head once too often and she too will emerge victorious from that damned root cellar….
There were also a few laughs, some classic Dean and Sam bitch face moments, in amongst the pain and suffering so thanks for that!
One last point of interest. I don’t know what you think of the whole slash genre, but I have now worked out, thanks to your writing and the theme of both these 2 books, why I am so uncomfortable with the idea of Sam/Dean. I am glad to say it is not through some deep seated prejudice or homophobia (and I certainly don’t get that impression from you either by the way). It comes from what we know about the two boys and their (you say it somewhere) dysfunctional relationship. It is rooted in Dean’s ridiculously low self esteem, and you absolutely nailed it on the head in the scene between Sam and Dean where Dean finally comes clean about what Lee did to him, how he had been to some extent projecting Sam onto Lee and Sam’s horrified realisation that Dean would let him (Sam) do anything to him and never fight back because he can’t deny his brother anything. There is this thing about loving some one too much.
I had read this slash fic xxx before reading your 2 stories, and I now realise why it actually made me so sad, and want to cry at the end. It’s because (and I don’t think this author intends it to read this way) there is this feeling throughout that Dean’s love for Sam is too extreme, and that this love is somehow warped by this act, so much so that it actually felt like rape, submission to a powerful force and not a joyous act – which is so totally opposite to Dean in the show (early Dean before Hell anyway) where he sees sex as a totally wonderful fun thing.
I think it is interesting the writers in the series have moved the characters on from this point and that Dean is now showing that he can detach himself from Sam, that his sense of self worth is now gradually developing away from being solely defined as Sam’s big brother, Sam’s protector – his job. I love the way they are doing this without reducing the love he feels for his brother, but giving Dean some much needed independence.
PS with my occasional proof reader hat on there were a few typos in latter chapters – like a ‘the the’ that should be a ‘that the’, missing end quotes, etc. If you want I can track back and let you know exactly where they are, if you are interested!! I know, I’m a sad woman! Author's Response: Wow: thanks for these wonderful insights! I try to put so many layers in when I write and tbh a lot of it does fly over people’s heads [tho not all of it!] so it is wonderful when someone reads and sees all the subtext. I have seen the Dean as joyboy idea in a few stories and always found it pretty believable in the context of being left alone with no money and no means of making it by hustling in other ways because of his age. I’ve never felt uncomfortable about it per se, but I have felt saddened by the idea, I think for the reasons you point to in your thoughts on Wincest: the fact he might go that far for Sam is just wrong. That his love might go that deep, and he might sacrifice himself in that way, is disturbing and warped – just as you felt it was in the Wincest fic you read. I have tried to suggest, subtly [because God knows I don’t want to incur the wrath of the brotherly-bonders] that the bond is in fact unhealthy and dysfunctional and this is very much intended as a parallel with current show plot and characterization. I really like my boys in character… actually that’s the main reason Wincest doesn’t really float my boat. I don’t see those tendencies in either brother, so to me Wincest would read as totally AU: two different characters, and since I want to read about the Sam and Dean I know I just don’t find that Wincest appeals to me. But interestingly, the odd ones I have read have been just like you describe: turning love into a twisted power play, Dean being so desperate that he will ‘go there’ – which, as you say, is just terribly sad and negative. I hadn’t ever thought about it in the terms you mention, but now I wonder if that might be another reason I tend to avoid them unless they have been written by people whose gen stories I have enjoyed. Now you’ve given me something to think about! And gah, please do email me about any typos! I post on my LJ and on FF too, and I usually read through a few times on those sites to pick up anything I might have missed but I don’t often come back here to correct any I find on the other sites… I always forget!

I'm sure it's been said lots of times (but I am writing this before reading any other reviews) but you capture the voices of the two boys really well, as well as the poignancy of their relationship as it has moved through the 4 seasons. Really, really nicely done... I shall now read your other scribbles with anticipation! Author's Response: Thank you! I have a craving for symmetry - probably has a lot to do with the fact that I'm a bookkeeper, and like things neatly balanced off on both sides of the ledger. I'm relieved that you feel I've captured the boys' voices - that's one thing I try really hard to do. I particularly liked the humour in the middle, it made me laugh; and of course pandered to my desire to see Dean's pants fall down without that leather belt (sigh). Great description of the fight to, and the fury of a gentle Sam when his brother was threatened - it rang true. Author's Response: And hullo again! Thank you - yes, the analogy certainly fit Season 1 Sammy, and probably S2 Sammy as well. But by S3, he was certainly changing, wasn't he? S4 - hmmm - would have to think about that one, but yes, definitely not a dove any more. Ah, LOL - glad you liked the humour, especially the mental image it gave you. And we all know after seeing Phantom Traveller that Dean's got pretty great legs. Thank you for that. I like the mirroring stories and actually think you nailed Sam's POV even better than Dean's (which probably reflects your growing empathy for our floppy-haired fave!). The loneliness they both feel and their joint dependencies are nicely rendered...
Author's Response: Thanks AMB. I actually thought Sam's POV was better also but wasn't sure what to attribute it to. Empathy works for me! :) To me, both these boys are some of the most tragic characters ever. |
