So I figure it is about time I stopped being a chicken and introduced myself, after all I have been inflicting my scribbling on you for a while now!!!!

My name is Abi, Abigail - when I am in trouble with my Mother!! I live in Merry England near Northampton (yes I paddle on THAT side of the pond!). I have one beautiful Son - who may well be the coolest person I ever met, and I have only known him for three years!!!!! LOL! And my understanding husband - who rolls his eyes resignedly at my Supernatural obsession, but indulges me anyway!

I have to say Supernatural is not my usual viewing - well not without a cushion in front of my eyes, but how can you ignore those Winchesters? It would take a stronger woman than I!!!! Finding this site has been something of a blessing. As both an avid reader and a closet scribblerI have found this site and the people I have met here to be a real treasure. It is probably a large part of the reason I came out of the shadows and had the nerve to scribble and to my HUGE astonishment - people read it!!!!! Now I am an absolute review junkie - but watching the read count go up on my stories is still the biggest thrill! So I guess I will end with a Thank you to all who take the time to read on this site - those that read and those that review, you don't know how much that makes a writers day!!!! And to the many, many far more awesome talents than mine - you feed my imagination and provide my escape, your skills are truly inspiring and you deserve the title "Unscripted Genius".

What a spectacular spook!!!! I wouldn't say I was that squeamish, but the description of that thing detaching it's head definitely made me swallow!!! I think it was the "popping of separating bones"!!! Ugg-uh !!!!!!

The pace of action during the hunt was really good and how you described the weather throughout added to the drama.

As always you create the best brotherly banter, and I particularly liked Dean ordering Sam to cut his arm off if he had to and especially Sam's "I'm lonely and I wanta hold hands"!!!! LOL!

Great stuff!

Author's Response: I was really afraid the monster wouod come off funny, I'm just so glad it didn't!

Sleepy Dean... Shivering Dean...Silent Dean....PASSING OUT DEAN?!!!!! I love the way you toy with him (and us!). Liked your "extra's" also, they set the scene and atmosphere well - comic book guy made me laugh.

By the way your authors notes make me chuckle as much as some of your one-liners!!!!

Author's Response: Ta i appreciate that. I love writing the authors notes, glad you enjoy reading them!

I think all the best exclamations for how EVIL that cliff hanger is.... have been taken!!!

Love how you set out your stall - telling us exactly what Dean is about to endure and then you upset the cart by smashing Sam's head into the steering wheel!!! Clever how the Poison makes you want to sleep and works most efficiently when you do. The fact that Dean admits how tired he is, just cranks up the suspense. If Dean is tired enough to admit it and Sam has a concussion ... Chapter 4 should be awesome!!!!

Author's Response: I'm so pleased you like it. Ta for commenting!

Every time I read something you have written, I get to feeling like a kid in a sweet shop... so many insightful, touching, funny, heartbreaking and downright HOT lines catch my eye, it's tough to know what to congratulate you on first!!!! Oh well- here goes, cavities be damned!!!!

For me it goes without saying (though I will as you deserve to hear it!!!) that you are a hugely talented writer, who just gets better tale after tale. But I wanted to congratulate you on how brave you were here, experimenting with your style and form. What I liked the most about this fic, was the way it made me think. I felt as if we were allowed to "swim" upwards through the levels of Deans well constructed armour. The first (ahem *smiles shamelessly) scene with Dean's encounter with the red head, is the most intimate look at Dean. Sammy believes he knows Dean's MO in this area, but he is way off. Deans actual motivation for his particular form of stress relief is far more touching and tragic.... "he craved the climb and yearned for the fall… he had to remind himself that he was still real, he still mattered as a person..."

Liked the way Dean keeps offering the girl an out if she needs it - he will not take what he needs at any cost. The way you write such incredibly hot scenes with just the right amount of feeling and tenderness in your characters is what makes them tasteful.

The second part highlights the post Deal tensions between the brothers. This section of Dean's armour is familiar to both us and Sam. Dean holds Sam just far enough away to protect him. Loved that Dean had a "protective grin" in his arsenal!! Deans masks help give both brothers something to hang on to.

And the last part is what the rest of the world sees - Dean in full cocky hunter mode. "You may have super strength, you sonuvabitch," Dean panted,... "But you're still in a human body."...  "And I know a thing or two about how easily human's break."

It's amazing how thinly that mask is stretched when Sam is threatened. And although your ending is dramatic it balances the rest perfectly.

Thank you for sharing your stories, you make it look effortless.

Author's Response:

My father-in-law had a quote pinned up in his office that was given to me after he died that said: "When something can be read without effort, great effort has gone into its writing."

I always think about that when I'm drawn in to a story that it written so well I can *see* and *feel* what the characters are going through. I remember that sensation, that feeling, when I write and strive to elicit the same impact with my words. I know that I don't always hit the mark -- and there are times I do for some and not for others -- but I thank you very kindly for this review as it seems I hit the mark for you.

I loved the cavity comment -- that made me grin. Thank you for reading and for accepting my experimentation. I hope to see you again.

Slainte,

Gaelic

It's stories like yours that make it so hard to like John all the time. But the way you write him from Deans eyes and from Caleb's is a good starting point. Dean was forged by his Fathers military intensity - to a certain extent John burned out a lot of the self preservation instincts from his son. John uses Sam to keep Dean in line and he uses Dean to keep Caleb in line. Caleb looks up to his mentor but from here on in the shine dulls a lot. As Caleb says his job is guarding Dean's back - this begins to include protection from his impossibly demanding father. Caleb does what we would all want to do for Dean... he gives him a break from being John Winchesters soldier. Great friendships are born in times of adversity - this was A LOT of the time when you grew up as a Winchester I am guessing.

Caleb takes on a lot of John's ways, having been tempered and trained by the man, but when it comes to the boys and his hunter family, he is the braver man, uncompromising in his devotion and fearless in his love. Did I mention funny as HELL?!!

I am slowly making my way through all the Brotherhood back-catalogue, here and (elsewhere) - have to say it's like Christmas has come early!!!! Thank you for sharing your considerable talents!

Excellent start! There were a lot of great aspects to your story, some of my favorites were; the way you switch between past and present (the hunt and aftermath), Sammy seeing through Deans eyes as their roles are reversed and especially loved the way you depict them communicating without words. The tension in this chapter really worked too - what the heck happened in Jerome?!!!!

Powerfully finished. Love the way Dean sees crying and expressing emotions as normal, healthty releases - for Sam! Your portrayal of Dean breaking was so well written "sobs that felt as if they would rip his throat out as easily as any warewolf or vampire could" - it's almost as if he sees showing his emotions to be as dangerous as hunting. And my favorite; "he was tearing off pieces of his heart and soul... offering them to the one person he could ever trust with them" - awesome stuff!!!

Your AU has me wishing just one thing... IF ONLY. You always feel Deans childhood had to be that hard going to produce such a self sacrificing individual, he grew up way too fast and it often seem that he has traded everything to give Sam a taste of normality (by Winchester definition!). Really like the relationship you have set up between Damien and the Deuce, it's nice to see someone looking out for Dean. The way you show Caleb to be the influence for Dean's later tastes and attitudes (wrestling girls in church barns and the rules of musical conduct on the road- for example) is clever. Your Brotherhood series is original and your writing style is entertaining. Thank you for the read!

Your style of writing is descriptive and powerful - in a very controlled way you convey a lot. Loved the desperate anticipation running through Sam's head when he calls Bobby; "The thought please, oh please, oh please, oh please, is running through his head, chugging and revving, wheels spinning, steam hissing and screaming like a demonic freight train, when Bobby answers" Amazing stuff.

The way you depict Sam catching only the Dr's key words, like "pain management" really highlights the shock Sam is in. Fantastic start .

It's a good thing that Dean's in this chapter so briefly I think the gentle, broken way you describe him might just make me cry!!!! Your empathy with the boys as they face Deans declining health is touching.

As for your portrayal of Action Sammy - I am impressed. His motivation, his will and driving force  to come through for Dean, is everywhere in this chapter. From the fact that he is being sustained by a packet of oatmeal cookies to what he endures taking on Sidley.

"The needles in his crotch, now those are above and beyond the call of duty. Except that really, they aren’t. How much is too much when your brother has sold his soul for you? " (LOL!!)

The desperation, determination and humor with which you write Sam is truly inspired. Your story continues to rock!

Reviewer: CdeWinter78 Signed starstarstarstar

If possible your chapters get progressively better and that chapter hit like the business end of a sledgehammer!! Your very first line is beautiful and has the feel of poetry to it. You have many beautiful lines and breathtaking descriptions "The janitor stays with him, holding his hand through his screaming as two ER doctors curse, pull, and wrestle his leg back in place" . Sam's response to Dean's recovery was perfect - Sam has always believed in Angels and now that he has seen a "real one", he appreciates his own guardian Angel all the more.  This is an accomplished piece of writing - thank you for sharing it.

I love that poem, it brought tears to my eyes. As I read on I only got to feeling worse, only writing as good as yours could make me feel so damn bad!!!! *Smiles* I am a huge fan of Damien and the Deuce, the way you characterise their relationship makes me wish that it wasn't an AU but in-fact cannon! The brilliant part is that their bond takes nothing away from the Sam and Dean link, if anything it is a fantastic way to see exactly how much Dean cares for his brother and how fiercely loyal and loving he is, behind his closed doors. You style of writing is both funny and sharp, and I am going to be hanging out every week to see where this goes.

The raw emotions of the characters is skillfully written - especially how you lay bear John's feelings for his protege. Dean bonding with Mac and their shared memories of Caleb... *got to find a HAPPY PLACE!!!!! ;-} * I have been indulging in your Brotherhood AU and owe you a truck load of reviews!!! This story - though hard on the tear ducts is equally easy on the imagination, you paint your pictures vividly and draw out the pain so well!

If I have thought it once I have thought it a thousand times..... a week is too LONG!!!!  Fantastic chapter. I like the way you throw in hints of Ian's involvement and plotting with Porter, maybe part of Porter's approval of Sam in the future? Joshua shows a more sensitive side, his growing admiration of the boys skills as hunters and his comment about Dean carrying on Caleb's memory - with his smart mouth!!!

The winding road to hope for Dean is really well plotted, and it is with a sense of desperation that Dean follows it. Sam's skills as a future scholar are displayed well here, even to the point of Dean hoping he could be a little less analytical.

The way you reveal the other characters in the community - Esme and Mac, John and Bobby, is also interesting and provides depth. Mackland gaining a personal insight into the loss he has up to now, only witnessed in other parents during his professional dealings, was skillfully portrayed. The fact that he was so open with Esme, does make me smile faintly at the thought of Caleb and Josh dealing with the possible outcome?!!!

If I have ranted on like an obsessive fan, I am afraid that is what you and Tida have reduced me too, but boy am I enjoying the fall! Wonderful update in an inspired story!

Love seeing all the alternate possibilities in this Supernatural "might have been a wonderful life" - but there is just enough humor that you can't feel too badly about it. The action and adventure of the Brotherhood AU is compelling, but the truly spellbinding stuff is the boys day to day lives. The fact that these ordinary (beautifully made!!!) guys with great skill and courage, face off against the dark, because this life chose them is what makes Ridley's (and your) work an unmissable read.
