The 24th pair by ophium Rated: K+ [Reviews - 2]
Summary: Reality is but a mere point of view, fueled by the emotions it stirs. For Dean, reality is a life where he has lost everything: his brother, his friends, Lisa... his legs. The only thing Dean has left is Ben, a surrogate son that is about to be taken from his hands as well.
For Sam and Bobby, reality is a constant search for someone that they have lost and keeping each other hopeful that their quest will not be in vain. And for some, reality is all that stands between them and their dreams of becoming more than humans.

This is a story about the same event, experienced from three different points of view. Trust no one; take nothing for a fact. Assume only that illusion and reality are twin sides of the same mirror.

Brilliant.  Especially loved the complexity of Dean's dream world intermingling with reality.  Sam and Bobby's hunt in reality was cleverly constructed to provide enough suspense and Balthazar's snark was beautifully delivered. And, best of all, all the loose ends neatly tied up. A hugely satisfying story which must have taken considerable effort on your behalf.  Thank you so much for the pleasure it gave me reading.  It shall be added to my favourites alongside some of your others. Cheers.

Author's Response:

Well, for one, thank you for sticking with the story despite the strangeness :)))

And thank you so much for your kind words! It was a risky way of telling a story, but one that pays off every time  someone enjoys it :)))))

Yes, spot on.  Dean's a hunter but he's also more than just his daddy's blunt instrument.  He's complex, and the past few years we've been led to believe that he can perceive the rare good in evil beings, the occasional gray within the mass of black and white - and differentiate between the two.  That's what made his actions against the Kitsune so shocking.  But you're right, at the base of it all he's a pure hunter who's first instinct is to take down the monster before it kills again, especially if it means he's ultimately protecting his brother from learning that Sam's merciful approach has only led to the death of a future innocent. And I agree with your end notes.  Dean's actions reflect the manner of someone at the end of his rope.  The betrayals (Cas), the heart break (Lisa & Ben), the seemingly endless run of bad luck (Sam) - Dean's lost all hope.  There is no light at the end of the tunnel.  There must be no respite for the wicked. There's only black and white.

Author's Response:

Oh, your comments are spot on! Dean is so complex and while he wanted to believe in good and that people could change, recent history has shown him that is false hope.

I think Cas and Lenore both play into his decision.  John would have done the deed and not agonized about it.  Dean will do the deed and then feel guilt and remorse, even though he knows it is the right thing to do.

Dean was raised to only see black and white, to hate evil and he did. Sam showed him a gentler way and he tried, he wanted to believe and yet, what happened?  Nothing good.

Dean is cracking, he is holding firm to the one thing he's always had to believe in, you kill evil.  Everything else has disappointed him and caused more death.

He is back to black and white.  I only hope he again can someday see the gray and find hope again.  He needs help.  I hope he finds it.

Thanks for the wonderful discussion. I love looking beyond the actions to the root cause of why he believes as he does.

Later, B.J.

Splendid story. Never guessed it was a hobgoblin but it all made sense that Dean could see him and Bobby and Sam couldn't.   So pleased that DEan got to do what he does best in the end - hunt that sucker down, outwit him and send him packing.  And even better that Boby and Sam had no clue.  Very satisfying tale, Thank you.

Author's Response:

I love me some smart Dean, so I tend do use that side of him as often as I can. Glad you liked it :))))

 Thank you!

There was so much time lost between their escape from hospital and the resumption of their lives in Rufus'cabin that your story makes plausible sense.  I'm especially pleased you mentioned Bobby's suddenly well-dressed arrival at the hospital and brusque handling of Dean.  It's something that baffled me at the time.  Bobby's house had been demolished. He'd lost everything, yet turned up in a suit at the hospital! But I'm glad you didn't try to explain the compound fracture that healed in just 3 weeks.  That would have been too much. Thanks for the story - especially from Bobby's POV.

Author's Response:

There were so many unexplained and OOC things in there that I needed to try to make it make sense, just for me.  And since most of the questions centered around Bobby (besides the clothes and the attitude, where was he the night before? Why didn't he answer his phone?) that the explanation had to come from him...even though I have the horrible feeling that leaving the blanks was on purpose, and we're going to be hit with an anvil soon.  *sigh*  Meanwhile, I wanted to be happy, so I managed to handwave away the other things, like the magically-healing leg and the easy way they made it out of the hospital without anyone questioning any of them (and other, more nitpicky things...)

Thanks so much for your comments, and I'm glad you enjoyed this!

Awesome.  First person narrative is always my favourite and you were spot on with Bobby.  He gets Dean - better even than Sam sometimes - and your perspective streaming live from inside Bobby's head felt (scarily) accurate.

While I loved the whole story for me there was one line that had me welling up. When Bobby asks if Dean trusts him and Dean responds he didn't know where he'd be without Bobby.  Bobby's line - I did. I had the voicemail to prove it. -  that got to me.

Nothing's been said about Dean's voicemail, a message delivered with such heartfelt anguish it was almost haunting.  Your one line revived that memory and, in my humble opinion, added greater depth to your entire one-shot.

Thank you for the pleasure of reading your story. Cheers.

Author's Response:

Thank-you so much for such a wonderful review. It means the world to me when someone picks out a little detail like that  - AND - I will admit, I thought that whole scene from Hello Cruel World really shows Dean's relationship with Bobby and his state of mind. He can't bear losing another person close to him... I thought Bobby's response to him in the hospital (although a bit down-played) was appropriate too. I just couldnt let it pass in this story considering the exchange between them.

It makes me sooo happy that it struck the same chord for you. Thank you so much! And thanks for reading and reviewing!

Very satisfying tale, well told.  The awful tragedy of Sam's very reasonable desires for a life outside of hunting clashing with Dean's understandable fears of losing Sam has always fascinated.  Such an impossible situation and your tale expresses that heartache eloquently.  Please write more mutli-chapters, particularly pre-series.  It has huge potential for the angst and reckless behaviour you write so well. Cheers.

Author's Response:

Diana,

I think I can accommodate your request for more pre-series. I have one now that I'm working on... as well as a shorter S7 story. I hope you might enjoy them as well.

Thanks again for taking the time to read and review. I wish you the best for the upcoming new year!

This is cool.  Getting into the mindset of both brothers is quite ambitious but you're pulling it off.  You've got me hooked.  Looking forward to rest of the tale. Cheers.

You haven't lost your touch.  That was good.  I especially liked your take on Lisa and her perspective. Lisa strikes me as an intelligent as well ask caring individual and I've often wondered if, after her experience with the Changelings and her brief reintroduction with Dean, she didn't look into the supernatural world.  Ben was bound to be curious and perhaps Lisa also wanted answers to questions.  I wonder then too, if that might have influenced her relationship with Dean.  Just idle thoughts.   Please keep writing, though.  Cheers.

Author's Response:

Wow! Thank you, I was not expecting a response and it kind of made my day seeing yours!

That's a really interesting and totally plausible idea - who wouldn't be curious if something like that touched their life? It could well have prepared Lisa for that year's experience with Dean.

It is my 2012 resolution to come back to writing, so you may well be subjected to more of my scribbles!! :) Can't thank you enough for taking the time to review though - what a great welcome back!

Abi.

Lovely little yarn, well told.  The images of what lies beneath London rang true.  Loved the final montage of Sam and Dean doing the tourist thing - feeding a sweet to the horses on guard and debating whether or not to salute Buckingham Palace, or if Pippa might be in residence.  Had me smiling hugely.  Only one question - how did the boys manage to smuggle Dean's Glock and "the knife" through airport security? Literary licence! cheers.
