He felt like he was betraying Dean by allowing this monster to defile his good name and all the great accomplishments of his life, and a part of him wanted to bust the demon’s jaw himself for daring to speak Dean’s name. But a part of him needed to know and Dean wasn’t talking. It was sordid and unsavory and so very wrong on so many levels… but God help him, he needed to know.

Date: 18/06/08 Title: Chapter 7: Chapter 7 - You Can Run But You Can't Hide I have just sat and read this through for the first time tonight and I have to say its beautifully written and totally engrossing, even in its darker moments. It now 2am UK time but I couldn't go until I'd read it all. So much of it is very true to the Dean we know and love and your imagination fills the gaps, blending (TV) truth and your fiction seemlessly. Poor Dean, was there ever a more troubled soul. Loved Bobby's comment about selling the car and that whole little bit with him and Dean, Bobby almost doing a 'Dean' there and hiding his concern behind the humour. Need more please! I absolutely love this, I can't really express in words how it makes me feel. Feels as though you are in Dean, you describe how he is feeling that well. You want to get to the end to know everything will be alright but you also want to savour every bit of what is a really intricate story too! I really, really love this story. Major favourite! Love this story, the bit with Dean and his mum was beautiful and Bobby pulling little pieces of Dean back with each belonging brought tears to my eyes. You know much as I quite liked the way S4 started I would have absolutely loved to have seen it come back like this. I actually like your version better!! So there Mr Kripke. He might have the wonderful Jensen *sigh*(yep I'm a Dean girl!), Jared and Jim but he ain't got you BJ. Looking forward to the rest but not it ending 'cos this story is just wonderful. Kripke has a million balls in his court and has to move the show along at a brisk pace to pack everything in. But he is so very fortunate to have this cast and his stable of writers creating their magic. That's what I love about fanfics, we can focus on that emotional hug and make it last however long we want! I'm rather liking this story too, not that I think I have that much to do with it, the story kinda writes itself, but I am also loving the direction of the show and can't wait to see what lies ahead for all our Winchesters. Date: 28/09/08 Title: Chapter 17: Chapter 17- One is the Loneliest Number HI BJ Don't change a thing, if the rest of this story is as good as what already up then I can't wait to read it. Loved this chapter, the little Dean on Dean moment, broken Dean with Sammy (the 'can you see me?' and the 'Am I real?' comments made me want to reach into the screen and hug him too!) and then a little glimmer of the man we all know and love. Wonderful chapter in a wonderful story. Said it before but I'll say it again, I love your version of S4, have done from the very start. Thanks for this, cheers Mary xx
Author's Response: Thanks, Mary, you really are too kind. I love Kripke's S4 too, but I do love being able to examine Dean's issues on a deeper level. You pointed out all the things I loved about writing this chapter. I totally love little Dean talking to Dean, and the dream/nightmare was a gift since my psychologist friend actually had that dream of Jensen/Dean after reading my story before going to sleep. And after all he goes thru, I knew I had to start giving him back pieces of himself because Dean Winchester is never down for long. He has this amazing ability to persevere and conquer. And I think I've finally learned how you get inside Dean's head so well....those little chapter notes. I'll tell you what I'd tell him.. no doubts, no fears only belief and the knowledge that you are good at what you do..I love your stories, they take you in and involve you. I know from experience that sometimes it is hard to get in the grove and I also feel that finishing a story and being happy with the ending is a huge deal and one that I don't always manage myself...but I live with the knowledge that I tried my best and at the end of the day...that's all that matters. I'd rather have worries that I'm not good enough, than ever get arrogant... Don't think I ever have to worry about that one, tho. LOL I always feel the most pressure to have a good ending. My last chapter is always written before I get there, I have to know where I'm going and how I'm going to close out a story. Date: 25/10/08 Title: Chapter 19: Chapter 19 - By the Grace of God, or Whatever Hi BJ Wow, I don't read many fanfics with tears in my eyes the whole way through but this chapter was amazing. Raw, powerful and sensual. I had a whole sea of shifting emotions reading it. Date: 05/11/08 Title: Chapter 20: Chapter 20 - I Fight Therefore I am Hi BJ I feel very sad at the moment because this wonderful chapter means that my favourite story on the site is complete, but it’s a happy, sad ‘cos now I can go back and read it whenever I want. I loved this last chapter, the change from the almost lazy pace of Dean’s thoughts to the panic of the storm coming, and you can feel Dean’s panic there like it is a living, breathing thing and then change of pace again as the rainbow appears, a promise that he has weathered the storm and things will get better. I love John telling Dean to just keep driving and not ever look back…something that we all should do sometimes. And then Sam is there, as always, willing to talk, willing to listen, willing to just be there. To catch Dean in the moments when he falters. You show that both brother’s love each other without conditions; wholeheartedly and embracing, each one the other’s rock. Dean willing to go on not despite of his fears but because of them, because this is who he is. A fighter; beaten, bloody but never truly broken. I love how the whole way through this story you make me feel that I am in Dean’s head, you take the man apart better than a whole host of demons could and then you piece him back together beautifully, leaving just a few of his flaws showing – as how it should be. I can see every piece of this story play out in my head as I read it, you write it so well. I think that you’ve taken the essence of the man that Jensen has breathed life into on the screen and done the same on the page and I love it. I love stories that rip open Dean’s chest and pull out his heart and you did that beautifully, both literally and figuratively. Raw and painful in places, uplifting and comforting in others but always beautiful and totally enthralling. A great take on Dean’s trip to and recovery from hell. I find so much to admire with the Winchesters and particularly Dean. We all should be as brave and fearless when facing our own personal trials. This story was rough at times. You can't possibly consider Dean spending that much time in Hell and not touch on the horror of that. But ultimately it is a story of survival and hope. I always love examining the man that Dean is, including all his fears and regrets and his dashed hopes. The fact that he does keep fighting makes him the ultimate hero. It is never easy, but he keeps doing what is right. Jensen has made Dean such an amazing character and he makes him come to life on screen. To think I could possibly come anywhere close to breathing life into him on the page is the ultimate compliment. Thank you again, from the bottom of my heart, for all your support on this story.
