Loved this chapter too.  Poor Sam awkward and embarrassed about his possible first sexual encounter and Dean taking him to a strip club, dressed in his dad's suit to loosen him up for the forthcoming event!  Could so imagine that conversation between John and Dean when their father found out, it was so believable.  Perfect Sam coming back the next night slightly inebriated and well proud of his conquest! And how proud was Dean with "That's my boy."

A great two chapter story, loved it.

Author's Response:

Hey again

I had fun with this one, big brother Dean at his best!

Glad you liked John and Dean's conversation, I liked it when I wrote it but it's always nice when someone confirms that it's believable.

I loved the end bit too, Dean marking off another major landmark that he's helped him achieve!

Cheers Mary x

Naggy beta, huh?  I just asked a simple question, but if you would like me to nag you ....... LOL!

Loved this story, with missing scenes from all the seasons, with the common theme of restocking the first aid kit and showing the subtle change in the boys relationship over the years, plus the different first aid/medical items they needed to purchase or purloin depending on their injuries.   Also liked the correlation that Dean mentioned a camping trip to the pharmacy assistant after your first missing scene for the Pilot/your fic Metamorphosis, when he and Sammy were back together again, and then the same camping story when he was again reunited with Sam after being raised from hell.

Each restocking fit perfectly with the corresponding episode - Kripke could have added them effortlessly and brought a little more to the show.

Loved the insight into the final scene, you got them both perfectly and so nice to see Sam needing his brother and letting him help him, something which was sadly lacking as a whole in Season 4 and Dean so needed to be the big brother again, even if it was just for a little while.  Spot on how Dean observed how much Sam was now like his father and loved this - Dean watched his brother, seeing the pain of too many losses flit briefly across Sam's expressive features. Is that why you changed, Sammy? Is that why you closed yourself off and became all uber-hunter? ‘Cos it hurt too much to keep feeling the way you did? Is that why you turned into Dad?

A really fantastic read sis, so in character with great attention to detail.  And I'm pretty sure that here you can buy burn gel over the counter too!

Sarah (not-so-naggy-beta - *ducks and runs*)!

Author's Response:

Huh, so the naggy beta takes time out from her busy schedule to leave me a review...ROFL!

And it wasn't a simple question, it was a definite poke. *pokes tongue*....

Thank you sis. This was such a change of pace from the last story, eh? Almost like a holiday. Ah, and you loved the symmetry too. Awesome.

I had to do that JTS tag - for a number of reasons. Just that little scene of Dean leaping back into big brother mode and Sam leaning on his brother for that brief moment - that was an awwww moment just begging to be expanded upon. Glad I could do it justice.

Great short story sis.

OMG Dean certainly underestimated his opponents but thank goodness Sam was bored in that motel room and came down to have a beer and a quiet game of pool or darts with his brother!

Awesome to see Sam in full protective mode, wanting revenge for Dean.  The fight scene was awesome, you really drew the reader in and I was right in there with Sam trading blows!

Great them recuperating at Pastor Jim's fishing cabin, kicking back for a while whilst Sam recovered.  So apt Dean comparing them to birds, him an eagle and Sam a dove, then wondering about the latter when thinking of Sam's display of anger, but Sam's comment about doves also being aggressive and  territorial when threatened fitted his brother perfectly.

And adored the suprise of John beating up Mutt in revenge for his boys, particularly Sam.  Nice that although he didn't return Dean's call he took action.  Just wonder if Sam and Dean will ever find out?

Yet again you come up with another masterpiece sis, loved it.

Sarah

Author's Response:

Hey, sis,

And thank you for your usual sterling beta-ing skills.

Yes, that was excellent timing on Sam's part - in a way. Pity he walked into trouble before he realised, but he certainly gave better than he got.

So glad you loved that John bit - you know I was worried about it. But I just felt that John was closer to the boys at times than he let on - just hovering in the background, keeping watch.

And glad too, that the eagle and dove comparisons worked. Sometimes these things play out so well in my mind, then lose something in the translation to paper.

Great one shot sis.

Loved how you had Sam seeing Dean holding the cassette, triggering memories he had tried to bury deep within him.  The flashback to what happened to it was perfect - the cassette being the catalyst for Sam breaking down in the aftermath of Dean going to hell and the youngest Winchester not being able to find a way to get him out.  The flashback was so raw and emotional and it was so believable that such a small object could trigger the tears that Sam had kept at bay.

Great too the parallel that the CCR tape had triggered in Dean when he had found it in the cassette deck in the Impala after their dad had died.

Perfect that Dean found his little brother and told him the story of what he did to the CCR tape then offered for him to salt and burn the Bon Jovi one, giving him some sort of closure.

As usual you pitched the ending just right, Bobby coming out, demanding where they had been and Dean's smart comments triggering their banter.  And how nice for them to hear Sam's genuine laugh again.

So in character and totally believable - the tapes meant so much but ended up giving both boys painful memories which needed dealing with, and you dealt with them perfectly.

And yes, I have used triggering quite a few times but couldn't come up with a better alternative - you could beta my review hon!

Have a great weekend.

Sarah

Author's Response:

Thank you, sis, and thank you for your hand-holding. You know I was worried about this one.

I'm happy that scene played out so well, with Sam spotting the tape and clamming up, and Dean wondering just WTF before discovering which tape it was.

And I did wonder what the boys - Dean especially - would have done with that CCR tape after the crash. I imagined it would have been Dean who found the tape, since he was working on the Impala on his own. It felt right to for them to use the tools of their trade to exorcise a few demons and ghosts of their own.

Thanks hun - for lotsa stuff.

Ooh, and yes, you have used trigger and triggering a few times, haven't you? Is this revenge for fiddling? ROFL!

Hmm, for someone whose lips are sealed a lot slipped out! LOL!  Just because I said it before you did - though in your case it would be Jensen - and your hands would probably be in the air as well *pokes tongue and runs off laughing*!  And wine and cheese - don't think I had any cheese when I was in Australia (perhaps I should fly back over and try some!) but will admit to having had a few glasses of cold Aussie red, and very nice they were too!

As for your muse, I can testify to the fact that you are not an axe murderer, spent two weeks in Brisbane with you and all my limbs are still intact and I was definitely not decapitated!

I digress, so must now concentrate on my review!

Awesome tag sis, could so have imagined this happening if the epi had continued.  Spot on Sam's wariness for want of a better word, not totally sure why Dean had called him and wondering if he would use Ruby's knife on him.  But perfect how Dean explained that it was what he became in the future that prompted his call, not because Sam was Lucifer's meatsuit.  If they are going to stand any chance of changing the future they have to do it united and together.

Will be ready and waiting when your muse gets back in line sis and hope that real life calms down for you soon.

Sarah

Author's Response:

Hey, sis,

No cheese with that wine? LOL. And my hands wouldn't be in the air, hun, they'd be somewhere else....

No, I'm not an axe murderer - at least, I don't think so.

Yes, I'm with you - Sam was wary, and hesitant, and it was so sad seeing him that way with his own brother. I'm wondering how the weight of Sam's guilt doesn't crush him where he stands, actually. Hope Dean stays right at his side just in case he does buckle under the strain.

Thanks sis - the muse hasn't come back as yet, but I'm hopeful...

Loved this.  Just knew Dean would get his revenge on Troy for Sam after his little brother had suffered again at the hands of the bully.  And just loved how he did it, humiliating the jerk!  Understandable that Sam would want to handle it himself but sometimes awesome big brothers just know what to do!  And could so imagine Dean saying all those things at the end of the chapter!

Great

Great little one shot.  Loved how you gave us how Dean's fear of flying started, but John knew just how to stop him going into outright panic, telling him it would scare Sammy!  Great how you wrote John, I always see him as loving his sons and doing what he thinks is best for them but often misses the big picture - they need love and affection - with his need to keep them safe.

Flying isn't my favourite passtime but did manage to do 24 hours straight, going to Australia on my own last year - and the return trip of course!

Author's Response:

Hey

I always wanted to do this fic since I watched Phantom Traveller and finally got round to it. I wanted a nice John in this, one that was still in the transition from father to hunter. Glad you liked it.

Take care, Mary x

Finally I have got a chance to read and review, it was so not a good idea to say I'd cover my son's shifts at work so he could go on holiday!

So good to have you back in the saddle Jules, have missed you, Fridays have not been the same for a few weeks!

Great start.  What's the chances of Sam's old college buddy being the nephew of Madeleine Devereaux, and them being on a hunt concerning her and her bowling team?

Love how you have Dean still haunted by the Djinn's altered reality, then having Sam meet up with his college buddies by chance, which intensifies the Djinn's words.  Dean is definitely not his usual cocky self and it is telling that he would rather go back to the motel than hang out with them.  I'm thinking the leggy blonde barmaid is Dean trying to convince Sam he is okay but can't see him making his move on her.

Interesting end to the chapter with Matt worried something supernatural is after him, and great link back to Skin with the mention of him speaking to Rebecca.  Can't stand Matt's girlfriend Felicia she sounds a prize b*tch, making a pass at Dean in front of her boyfriend.

This chapter has set things up perfectly, looking forward to the next one - I sense Matt could be in for a bumpy ride, and things won't be that easy for our intrepid heroes!

Sarah

Author's Response:

No, see sis, you have that all back-to-front. Tom's supposed to cover your shifts so you can go off on holiday. Don't forget for next time - lol.

Thank you - it was a bit uncomfortable being back in the saddle at first - as you know. But I think I'm settling in now, and the stirrups have been adjusted for my short legs - lol.

Oh, and thank you for not liking Felicia - ROFL. There won't be any redeeming qualities coming up for her any time soon, either. As for Matt - well......not everything is as it seems there either.

hugs, sis,

Jules

Great second chapter sis.

Dean is certainly very mixed up with Sam meeting his college buddies and them being involved in the hunt as well as all the bad memories from the Djinn's altered reality.  Usually he would have figured it was a revenant immediately and they wouldn't have had to salt and burn Aunt Maddie's bones.

And Sammy knows that something is up with his brother but getting Dean to talk about it could be like getting blood out of a stone.

Matt is a bit of a dark horse, he must be lying to the Winchesters if the revenant is after him as it only goes after the guilty.  And Felicia is so repulsive I don't even feel sorry that she has got caught up in it - making passes at Dean when she is going out with Matt is so not on.

Will our intrepid heroes get back to Aunt Maddie's place before the revenant kills again and save Matt and Felicia's backsides - can't wait to tune in next week to find out!

Have a great Christmas sis

Sarah

Author's Response:

Yullo!

Yes, Dean's brain is still a tiny bit confused as to what's real and what's the Djinn fantasy, especially since Sam's words keep mirroring the dream-Sam.

And you're right - they have to talk, but getting Dean to share his feelings is like trying to get blood from a stone. Sam's got his work cut out for him, and his buddy Matt is going to prove a bit of a hindrance as well.

Thanks, sis.

Jules

Reviewer: ziggy Signed

For someone who had just had his a*se saved by the Winchesters, Matt certainly has a one-sided opinion of Dean, only looking at what he sees as the negative effect of his relationship with Sam.  You'd think he'd be a little more grateful but some people obviously can't see the whole picture.  And what's with the dreadful Felicia still trying to get close to Dean, I know she's just had the shock of her life but it hasn't put a dent in her determination to get close to him!

And poor Sammy, concussed and with a dislocated shoulder and with a college buddy who's not listening to what he is saying, thinking Dean's hauled him into a life he doesn't want.

They say you never hear any good when eavesdropping and Dean has backed off after only hearing part of Matt and Sam's conversation.  With his mind still reeling over the Djinn episode I hope the older Winchester doesn't do anything rash after filling in Aunt Maddie's grave.

Great installment sis.  Hope you had an amazing Christmas.

Sarah

Author's Response:

Hey, sis,

Yep, Matt's a bit of a fool - but then, look who he picked as a girlfriend......

And you're right - you never hear anything good, and Dean just happened to pick the worst moment to come to the door. Let's hope that Sam can make it to him in time before he does something he'll really regret - unless of course Sam doesn't want to find him........*grins evilly*......

I had a very peaceful Christmas, sis, just Chris and me, and a really good day. The heat wasn't too bad thankfully - we had a bit of rain to cool things off.

First of all, congratulations on your back-to-back Kripke wins, so well deserved sis, your writing is pure genius, so in character and you definitely have the talent to write for a living.

Fantastic epilogue you tied up everything brilliantly. If only Matt had been truthful with Sam from the get-go Sam's injuries would have been avoided as they would have known exactly what they were dealing with from the beginning.  And just loved how Sam put Matt right about Dean, but his college buddy not only misjudged Dean, he really didn't know Sam at all either.

Great that Sam asked Matt to tell the truth, lies caused all the problems in the first place and Burt's family deserved to know exactly what happened.  And loved that Sam told Matt to ditch the Ice Queen, despite his flaws Matt deserved better than her!

Loved the brotherly moments between the boys at the end of the chapter and just spot on that touch was the key to Dean shedding the last lingering memories of the Djinn's world,  Perfect that as soon as Sam heard his big brother's words he leaned even more into his touch, reassuring him in the best way that this was his reality.

Another totally fantastic read sis, you rock.

Hope you had a great New Year's Eve and that 2010 is a fantastic year for you and Chris.

And congratulations to Chris on her Best Artist award, her banners for your stories are amazing and her creativity in that department second to none.

Sarah

Author's Response:

Oh, gosh, sis, I still don't quite know how I did it......

Thank you for that, and for your awesome beta-ing skills.

Yes, if Matt had told Sam the whole story, they'd have been prepared for a revenant instead of being caught off-guard like they were. Lucky Dean slipped that silver knife into the weapons bag at the last minute or they would have really been in trouble.

And no, they really didn't know Sam at all, did they? Matt had his eyes opened in more ways than one, though.

Had to have our little chick-flick moment at the end - I owed it to the boys after what I put them through - lol.

Thanks sis, for so much.

A really enjoyable read.  Loved that you played this differently from other 'normal' Christmas fics for the youngest Winchester, having it at the Warren's instead of with Jess.

The Warren's normal though was slightly more opulent than most but all the Christmas things that Sam probably missed when growing up were there.

Perfect ending, him ringing Dean - a normal family Christmas without any of his family was just wrong.

First of all, thank you so much sis for your beautiful words in your story notes, they brought a lump to my throat and a tear to my eye. You make my job easy, with only having to suggest the odd tweak, or putting Dean back where he came from!

Fantastic one-shot sis, you conveyed exactly what it was like in snow, it shows how creative your imagination is, only having seen the white stuff a couple of times in your life!  And even better because you imagined it whilst sitting in sweltering heat!

Loved frostbitten Sam and Dean, determined to protect his little brother from the Yoko Ono, sorry Yuki-Onna!  Just so Dean, changing her name!

And just had to comment on this part, so insightful -

But Dean knew better. He could see the devastation of his brother's soul mirrored in the expressive eyes whenever Sam let his guard down. He knew the younger man was absolutely gutted by what he'd been manipulated into doing, and the only thing keeping Sam on his feet and moving forward through all this was his burning desire to make it right - to find a solution and earn his redemption. It was all he had left.

Well, that and a brother who was struggling to find his own forgiveness for his part in breaking the first seal, Dean reminded himself, tightening his arm around Sam's waist. That same brother was also striving to move past the hurt and betrayal to repair the broken bond between himself and his younger sibling.

Perfect that you brought Bobby and Castiel into the story to rescue the boys from the cave, with their extended 'family' dwindling these two are crucial to them.

Great ending, safe back at Bobby's drinking spiced apple cider. and so Sam that he would voice how scared he is about what is coming up in the future. Perfect toast at the end - to family and to hope - they are all going to need both in bucketfuls.

Hope you had a fantastic Christmas sis and hope you have a wonderful New Year and hope 2010 brings you everything you wish for.

hugs Sarah

Author's Response:

My pleasure sis.

And I swear to God, Dean moves when I'm not looking. I put him on the coffee table, went to make a cuppa, and when I came back he was on the chair, I kid you not. Sam never moves - it's always Dean, the ratbag......

LOL

Thank you - especially for your snow help. The snowy woods pics you sent me and the description of the snowfall really helped put me in the moment.

And I think that deep down, Dean knows what Sam is going through, but he's still finding it hard to push past his own anger and hurt to reach out too far to his brother. But I think his haste to make that phone call at the end of The End, and his tears at seeing Lucifer in Sam's body and knowing that his brother was truly gone, has gone a long way towards him fighting past that block to get his brother back. I'm hoping for a full restoration by the end. Kripke promised.....

And yep, Cas and Bobby - especially Bobby - are essential to the boys now. I just had to include them.

Jules

This was hysterical!  Although a Sammy girl I'm rather partial to some naked Dean too!  What a pity both of them didn't have to get naked for the reveral ritual!

So funny how Dean's name was the trigger and loved too Sam's embarrassment as he triggered Dean to strip with his name when his elder brother was being a little stubborn and then tried to keep his eyes averted when reciting the ritual!  So funny too that Sam had to then dress Dean for the reversal to actually work.

Not at all surprised that Dean stomped into the bathroom afterward, and if Sam has any sense he will never mention the incident again!

Great one-shot, loved it!

What an amazing piece of writing sis.  So original and well-crafted and perfect that you told it from Bobby‘s POV, putting a different spin on it.  You got the emotions of  them all perfectly in the aftermath of John’s death.  Loved how you had Bobby automatically assuming a parental responsibility for them, not forcibly, but just by being there for them when they most needed it.   Perfect how he took the initiative with selling John’s GMC, something both boys were not up to, although he had to take Sam with him to help him empty the vehicle when it came to the sale.  Glad you addressed this issue as it’s something Kripke never dealt with but it was something I’d always wondered about.

So believable both boys meltdowns, Bobby being the anchor both of them needed.  And could so imagine Dean silently witnessing Sam’s breakdown but being unable to bring himself to go to him because of  his grief and the weight of the secret he was keeping.  Liked the fact that you had Dean confess his dad’s words to Bobby, not totally meaning to but unable to keep them to himself any longer.

The ending fit so well, both how they are reacting to each other and Sam finding Ellen’s message on their dad’s mobile, which ties in neatly with ELAC.
You excelled yourself with this story sis, and just loved  the dedication to Chris,  she is an awesome person and having spent two weeks with you both feel she is my Auntie too, with a very small age gap!

Just fabulous.

Author's Response:

Aww, thank you sis.

I love how Bobby just slid into that parent role on the show - he's been so good for the boys. His relationship with Sam worried me a little from time to time - it was as if he wasn't quite sure of Sam. And that made me wonder whether he'd been John's backup plan for a worst case scenario. Until I saw the last two eppies of S4 - then all my worries went out the window.

Oh, me too - I wondered what had happened to Truckzilla. I mean, the weapons, the ID's - all John's stuff - surely they wouldn't have just abandoned the whole kit and kaboodle in Lincoln. And we never saw the truck again so they didn't bring it back to the salvage yard. The only solution was that they'd sold it and used the money to get the Impala back on the road. Then of course that line of thinking led to the question of why they didn't use the truck for hunting until the Impala was fixed.....so that led to me theorising that the boys just couldn't face the thought of riding around in their dad's truck immediately after losing him so suddenly.

I know that I still think of my ute as Alan's car, even though my uncle has been gone four years now.

Thanks sis.

He remembered holding a much smaller version of it when he was younger, feeling a warm glow in his heart as the short, pudgy fingers clung to his like a lifeline. In fact, he had gripped that hand, or its mate, tightly for most of their lives, through all kinds of situations from the first day at school to a hunt gone wrong or the aftermath of a nightmare.'

Another awesome story Jules.  Loved how you demonstrated how touch was so important to the boys, particularly Dean who so often buries his emotions and is not so happy to talk about things as his little brother.

Perfect the vignettes of them holding hands throughout the years and in different situations.  First the welcome touch of brother meeting brother, then reassurance and comfort on Sammy's first day of school, so important as their dad wasn't there to help him through it, but Dean was and his grasp gave Sam what he needed.

And in the crash scene, holding tight to Sam's hand gave Dean the comfort and reassurance he needed that his little brother was still alive and when Sam came to he needed that contact, knowing it was okay to go back to sleep.

In the aftermath of Jess' death and subsequent nightmares Dean's touch said so much more than words ever could, just letting his little brother know he was there for him and wouldn't be going anywhere, giving Sam something to cling to, a much needed lifeline.

Perfect that Dean's touch was what grounded Sam and prevented him from crossing over and dying when he was under the influence of the faerie, although her pull was strong, the pull of his big brother was stronger and kept him in his own reality.

And loved this last vignette and the little twist that this time it was Dean with the infected wound and fever, but even though he was out of it still grabbed his brother's hand and Sam hung on tight knowing it was what Dean needed until his fever broke. And loved the thought at the end that touch gave hope that although their relationship was fractured they still had something to cling to and build on.

Fantastic sis, a really insightful story, loved it.

Sarah

Author's Response:

Hey, sis,

I think I passed on to you the details of that discussion between me and Cookie about Dean being more of a toucher than Sam. Surprising but true. Dean communicates a lot through touch, and garners reassurance for himself through the same medium.

Ah, that little twist at the end - you know I love my little twists. I'm hoping that the brothers will remember in season 5 what is important and reforge their bond. Fingers crossed.

First off I had to laugh at your comment about my red pen corrections, you made me sound like a teacher - but wait, aren't teachers not allowed to use red pen now as it may damage the child's psyche?  Hope my red doesn't damage yours, but in my defence I have to use a colour that is different from your typed words!

Just loved this sis.  I always had a problem with that particular scene, thinking it was sloppy writing and totally out of character for Dean to do that to his little brother, even if he was 100% sure of his hunch.  Your story made it explainable though.   You totally got across that in hindsight Dean would regret his action, realising how hurt his brother was, and totally got inside his head with the nightmares giving him various scenarios of his little brother dying from the prank - rather like Sam had in his reality in Mystery Spot.  Loved how you also brought Zachariah (the p*ick) and Castiel into his nightmares too, their reactions compounding Dean’s guilt.  Also loved the scene in the hospital, so like the situation Sam found himself with Dean in Faith and also Sam dying when Dean was about to go and get coffee, again a parallel to Sam finding their dad dead in In My Time Of Dying.

Perfect how things came to a head with Sam’s reaction to getting a faint zap from the buzzer when looking for a twenty in Dean’s jeans pocket, the older Winchester  seeing the hurt and betrayal in his little brother’s face and knowing he has to put things right.

Great the scene by the stream and their much needed talk, Sam opening up to Dean and Dean letting Sam know he regretted the action and that it wouldn’t happen again.  Their relationship may still have its cracks but they still have each other and  loved the image of them striding back towards town falling into easy banter.

An amazing story Jules, you took a scene I hated and gave me something plausible.

Sarah

Author's Response:

Hi, sis,

Oh, yes, irrevocably scarred by your copious red pen corrections - my poor delicate little psyche....*sniffles pathetically*......

I was shocked as well, as it seemed to be such a not-Dean thing to do, especially given that they knew the thing could kill.

Chuffed that you liked the parallels to Faith, Mystery Spot and In My Time Of Dying. I was originally toying with the idea of Dean actually going for the coffee then coming back to find Sam had died in the dream, but I changed my mind at the last minute.

Thanks for all your help on this one, sis, even though I confused you with that final dream sequence - lol.

Awesome fic sis.  Loved how you showed how Dean is home to Sam and, although this fic is essentially from Sam's POV it is also true that Sam is home to Dean as both are only complete when they are together, apart there is always something missing and they need each other even though it is something they wouldn't really admit to.

You picked perfect scenes from episodes through the seasons to convey this, from the Pilot right through to what could (and I hope does) happen at the end of Season 5!   And could so imagine Castiel sacrificing himself to destroy Lucifer, making up for the fact that he let Sam out of Bobby's panic room, enabling the younger Winchester to break the final seal and start the Apocalypse.

Just love how you write the bond between the boys, your words show how much they love and need each other without being chick-flicky and, as always, you have them so in character.

A really great fic, loved it.

Sarah

Author's Response:

Thank you sis.

Yes, Dean is home, and I wanted it basically from Sam's point of view to really emphasise that. And I agree - there is not one without the other.

I'm wondering about Cas too, just quietly. And we both know that I want both boys still standing at the end, and definitely not having said yes to either Lucifer or Michael.

Thank you for your help on this one, and your patience with my endless tweaking.

Jules

Absolutely awesome tag Sonya.  You got the boys perfectly in this, true to character and totally believable.  Wish Kripke had actually included this in the episode.

You were totally inside Sam's head that he was scared Dean would be disappointed in him but needed his big brother anyway.  And you could really feel him going through withdrawal.  Not surprised he broke down when he realised Dean had had to clean him up but loved how Dean made Sam look him in the eye as he reassured him he didn't let him down.

Perfect that you had Sam tell Dean that famine was wrong, that Dean wasn't dead inside and Sam knew just where his heart was and that his question "I'm not empty?" turned to confirmation "I'm not empty." when he heard Sam's words "No Dean" "Far from it."

Couldn't fault this, wonderful.

Congratulations on your one year anniversary of posting and what a great fic you celebrated the occasion with.

Sarah

Author's Response:

Aw, thanks so much Sarah!  Whenever somebody says they wish something I've written was in the show it just makes my day.  I take that as a huge compliment!

I don't know how the show is going to handle the question of Dean's soul but there is no way that man is dead inside.  Someone who was dead would not feel so much pain and could not love the way he does.

Thanks again for the lovely review!

Absolutely awesome tag Jules, wish Kripke had added something like this to the episode, but thank goodness we have authors like you to do what he didn't!

Loved how heartfelt Dean's plea was out in Bobby's salvage yard and typical that no answer revealed itself in the dark clouds.  To have to see Sam in withdrawal for a second time must have really torn him apart.

You perfectly described Sam in the aftermath of the withdrawal, a physical and emotional mess, but loved how Dean gritted his teeth against the smell and he and Cas cleaned Sam up.

And typical that Sam would be guilt ridden and blaming himself for being weak when he finally regained consciousness but Dean saying he told him as soon as he started to be affected showed how much Sam was fighting against it - no secrets between them however hard it was to admit.  And yes, had a Devil's Trap been at the door the demons may never have got in.

Perfect ending, can imagine Sam not wanting to be left along and spot on him saying  Famine was wrong about Dean, there is so much heart in the elder Winchester.

A really great read sis, fantastic tag.

Sarah

Author's Response:

Aww, thanks sis.

Yes, I can imagine how tough it was on Dean the second time - and Sam, too, for that matter. The way he dropped his head in shame back at the motel just broke my heart, when he admitted to Dean that he was 'hungry for it'. And of course, Dean missed the aftermath of the detox, because Sam didn't actually go all the way through the last time.

Quite a few people have been surprised that there wasn't even a line of salt across the bathroom door to protect Sam - that is so unlike Dean. Petra mentioned that perhaps it's a reflection of just how broken Dean is becoming, that he's forgetting the basics. I'm hoping it's that and not sloppy writing.....

Thanks, sis, for all your help on this one, especially since I pulled a bit of a switch on you at the last minute - lol

Well you won't hear any spoilers from me for the 100th episode sis, I am staying spoiler free and just watching the episodes via streaming as they air!

Great start.  Was certain Zachariah manipulated the boys good memories in DSOTM in order to stop their relationship becoming more brotherly again, and what better way to do it that show Dean that Sam doesn't need him.  Though you only had to see young Sam's face in Dean's memory of the fireworks to know that wasn't so.  And just to put pressure on Dean to say yes he sets up a trap and kidnaps Sam to use as a bargaining tool and drops the bombshell that it was Cas who let Sam out of the panic room the night Lucifer was freed, to alienate him from the angel too.

Just hope that both boys have faith in each other and will hold out, Dean from saying yes to Michael and Sam from saying yes to Lucifer when Zachariah hands him over, as he is sure to do, as he's admitted himself that he's petty.  At least Cas has whisked Dean away from Zachariah and Bobby is on his way as I sense those two will be crucial in stopping Dean from saying yes, as that pr*ck of an angel puts pressure on Dean, yanking his chain.

Already eagerly looking forward to the next chapter.  And congratulations on posting your 50th fic sis.

Sarah

Author's Response:

Hi, sis,

Don't forget to not tell me about the episodes either.

I'm pretty sure Zachariah had something to do with it, too, although Bardicvoice had a different theory in her meta analysis of the episode. But it seemed like everything Dean saw up there was destined to do one thing - alienate him from Sam again.

And we all know that apart, they're vulnerable. But it's going to get pretty tough before the end...

Thanks for that - wasn't the expected fiftieth story, as you know, but it was obviously meant to be this one, and not Seven Days.

Awesome chapter sis.  And my lips are sealed about all episodes after 5:16, wild horses wouldn't get any information from me!  I will tell you nothing!

Not surprised Dean was a little sceptical about  the honesty of  angels and tackled Castiel about what Zachariah had hinted.  And  that Dean just didn’t accept his explanation of following orders, when Castiel knew exactly why he was letting Sam out.  Glad that Castiel mentioned that he thought Zachariah orchestrated something else to sway Sam, although he didn’t know what, as it’s really frustrating that the doctored phone message has never  been mentioned again in the series and it was crucial to Sam making the decision to kill Lilith.

And loved how Cas popped back and forth from Dean to Bobby and back again, filling the older hunter in on events!

Gosh, Zachariah really did a psychological number on Sam to try and break him and make him believe that Dean would say yes to Michael, what a b*stard.  And how awful for Sam to have Dean’s damning words running through his head , strengthening what Zach said.

Not satisfied with trying to do a number on Sam he then tries to do the same with Dean to get him to say yes to Michael.  And how cruel, ripping out a chunk of Sam’s hair - that pr*ck of an angel needs taking out permanently for that alone!  Thank goodness Bobby and Cas are there to counter Dean when he feels he has no option but to give in, especially when Zach appears again when time is up.  At least this time Dean has images of Sam running through his mind and remembers his little brother’s determined words when he tells Zach where to stick it.  Now he just has to trust Cas and his plan.  He may not be 100% sure of Cas since Zach’s revelation (so his plan didn’t work) but he knows how sorry the angel is and that he wants to make up for his mistake.

Dramatic end to this chapter, hurting and dehydrated Sam being whisked off to Lucifer, hope in his weakened state he can hold out - and that Cas’ plan, whatever it is, is a success.

Sarah

Author's Response:

Thank you, sis. It's been hard to stay away, and I've been petrified that someone will slip up, so I haven't even been on the site much except to check reviews. I've been hiding under my rock trying to get chapter 3 done and sent.

That thing with Cas has bugged me, as you know. So I had to get that out, and I just knew Dean wouldn't take it well.

And yes, Zachariah's a sod. I hope he has a messy end in the show. And I've got something special planned for him in this story...*smirks evilly*.... But yep, he's playing the boys, trying to get a crack in their armour.

As for Cas' plan, well, we'll find out very shortly what it is.

Wow, another awesome chapter Jules with so much going on.

Much as I can’t stand Lucifer I loved how he put that pr*ck Zachariah in his place and zapped him away, bet he’s not so pompous now!  All it needs now is for him to be taken out permanently!   And though Satan seems to be taking care of Sam it is only for his own ends, so however weak Sam is physically hope he can stay mentally strong.

Awesome idea having Cas go to Gabriel to try to get his help and although the archangel  couldn’t be persuaded at least he told Cas that Lucifer was in Detroit.  And good point - I’m sure Castiel was only allowed to pull Dean from hell after he had broken the first seal.

Sam is really going through the mill here, first with Zach and now with Lucifer trying to convince him Dean hates him but all credit to him for staying strong.   Unfortunately Lucifer is now bringing out the big guns and is playing mind games, making Sam believe he is in a coffin, like when he buried Dean.

Surprised Bobby has not slapped Dean upside the head for his defeatist attitude but thank goodness the older Winchester finally got angry and slammed Sam’s duffle at the wall, spilling its contents and revealing the amulet which Sam rescued from the rubbish bin.  And it is a testament to how down Dean is that Bobby had to explain that to Sam the pendant meant Dean and that he also had to tell him just what his death at the hands of the hellhounds had done to his little brother and how the amulet was all he had to hang on to.  At least hearing that has now given Dean the determination not to give in to Michael and to find and rescue Sam.  Thank goodness Bobby’s idea to locate one of Lucifers minor demons worked,  which in turn gave them the exact location of the devil himself.

Dramatic end to the chapter as Lucifer is really upping the ante here as he has to resort to mental manipulation to try and break Sam, such is his determination not to give in and become his meat suit.   Just hope Dean, Bobby and Cas get there quick as Sam sounds like he is going through hell in his head.

Totally gripped by this story, and so looking forward to the next chapter.

Sarah

Author's Response:

Hey, sis,

Awww, thank you! Yes, I rather enjoyed Lucifer giving Zachariah sh*t. Pompous a-h. Taken out permanently? Working on it...

Yes, pulling Dean out of hell - remember when Petra emailed the group with her thoughts on that after the season 4 finale aired? I think she was right. I think Zachariah held the angels back until Dean broke, then sent them in to rescue him. Horrible thought, but...

Oh, Bobby would have slapped Dean, but the boys have been through so much he decided to go easy on him. This time - lol.

And yep, Lucifer's in it to win. No matter what....

Hmm, like Sonya still not getting alerts that you have updated but as it is Friday I mosied on over!

Another awesome chapter sis, with so much going on!

Yay, Castiel is pretty sure he's found out where Lucifer is hiding out and has kidnapped one of the lookout demons, giving Dean and Bobby a clear way into the city!  And just loved the conversation between him and Dean, he now knows why Dean felt so betrayed by him and Castiel now has a sense of family and wants to atone for his mistake.

Loved Sam fighting back against Lucy, not giving one inch to the devil, just a pity he didn't do any real damage.  The fact that Lucifer got Meg to inflict pain on Sam shows how desperate he is to break him.

Great little conversation between Gabriel and Raphael, nice that Castiel has sowed some seeds of doubt and Gabriel felt compelled to pass those doubts on.

Dramatic ending there sis, on a few counts - Bobby got by a demon, Meg holding the demon-killing knife to Dean's ribcage and Lucifer doing something (hope not killing) to Castiel!

Just how are Team Free Will going to get out of this one, they definitely seem to be up the proverbial creek without a paddle between them?

Although I am up-to-date with the epis I'm staying spoiler free for the last two!  Enjoy catching up sis!

Thanks, sis. So glad that talk between Dean and Cas in the car worked so well. I tweaked it endlessly as you know, trying to strike the right note.

There's a lot of brother stuff going on in this story, not just between the Winchesters but also the angelic siblings as well. Family plays a huge part in this tale.

Aww, thank you - I do love a nice meaty cliffhanger. And this one was rather juicy. LOL.
