7.03 The Girl Next Door - A series of drabbles – Dean is in a no-win situation. A glimpse inside his head as he considers his actions. How hard is it to be a hunter, to make those impossible decisions? Angst & philosophical insight.

I love that an episode that many hated, stirs up all this discussion and hopefully illumination into the workings of Dean's mind. The writers sure know how to dig deep and unearth some hard truths. I love the complexity, the different views, the absence of a set answer that we can all agree upon. Life is complicated, the life of a Winchester more complicated and messy than anyone else.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Date: 27/02/12 Title: Chapter 13: Chapter 13 - Desperate Does Dean Winchester want to be that man? Ahhhh...would he ever dare to think of another life any more? I think that's what has Dean stymied. I love the little moments when Jensen shows the truth of Dean. Like when Sam tells him that he doesn't have to be responsible for Sam's life, that he can go live his own life. Dean isn't happy, he's worried...just what the hell would he do without his duty? Where would he even begin to know who he is and what he wants? That is the tragedy of Dean's life, that he doesn't even miss what he's never had. He can't begin to think in those terms. Maybe one day... B.J.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Date: 27/02/12 Title: Chapter 14: Chapter 14 - Survival Yeah, he's good at his job...he would never have it any other way... Dean is good at his job, but in ways he doesn't realize. He isn't just accomplished as a hunter, he has insight and empathy and somehow knows to make the right calls, listening to his own inner voice and doing what just someone with skill couldn't. I believe that is why God chose him to save the world. Because he is special. I just want Dean to one day feel that and feel that who he is and what he does is good enough.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Date: 27/02/12 Title: Chapter 15: Chapter 15 - Cold I thnk Dean knew Amy had to die and was ok with that. He wasn't ok with killing someone's mom, or his brother's friend, or lying to his brother. Reconsiling it all, well, that takes a fifth of whiskey, sometimes.. Author's Response: Dean and whiskey, best friends for a long time. Dean always wars between what he knows is right and what his heart wants. He does his job. Then to reconcile the rips to his insides, he self-medicates. He can only go on so long before something gives. Then hopefully he'll be on the road to recovery and acceptance. B.J.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Date: 27/02/12 Title: Chapter 16: Chapter 16 - Guilt I think he closes off, he doesn't think too much about it.
Of course, he can't control his nightmares..... Author's Response: Dean is a master at shutting down, at ignoring the pain and pretending he's all right. Yes, the nightmares intrude on his tightly held control and he is unable to stop the night terrors. Hence, more whiskey to try and dull the pain. I do wonder if now he will avoid the liquor and then without it, how will he cope? I'm excited for what's to come. I know the finale will be huge and emotional, at least I'm hoping!

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Date: 27/02/12 Title: Chapter 17: Chapter 17 - Worth So nicley written...but do you think Dean thinks this way? I think he just accepts that he didn't have a child hood, he was happy to let Sam have one & enjoyed watching him be a kid, but never really understod that he deserved that, as well.... I agree, Dean never feels he is entitled to more. He would never expect or ask for more. But somewhere, deep in his head, there has to be a tiny voice screaming to be heard. I think Dean's managed to shut it down to the point that he genuinely would be puzzled by anyone thinking he deserved more. But that voice is insistent and eventually something will break loose and he'll be forced to listen and respond. I can see him shirking it off, denying until he runs out of room. I hope in the end he finds his worth, as Jo mention, finds out who he really is, and feels the value in that. He is so deserving. B.J.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Date: 27/02/12 Title: Chapter 18: Chapter 18 - Acceptance He can live with what he has done... ...because of Sam... Author's Response: I think Sam has always been the standard bearer, the reason to keep going. I think at some point Dean is going to need more. He is going to have to let Sam grow up and be his own man, which leaves Dean with a lack of purpose. As partners, they can both watch the others' backs, but it comes down to them being equals and that leaves Dean's purpose not as intense, Sam able to fend for himself. But Dean will always bear the burden and do the job. He knows it is expected, but not from anyone but himself. Dean feels he must, so he will. B.J.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Date: 27/02/12 Title: Chapter 19: Chapter 19 - Simple You think he got a little chink in the armor with Lenore? I thought so, for a while, but maybe not so much now. Besides, I do agree that Amy would have killed again. She, like Dean, would do anything to save her family. Dean knew this, felt this, and that's why he couldn't let her go on.. Author's Response: One step forward, two steps back. I think Lenore opened Dean's eyes and his heart. But then even Lenore said she couldn't fight her nature. She killed again. I think Dean absolutely knows what someone would do for family. He's the poster boy for family devotion. So as much as he understands, the very fact that he understands is why he had to end her. He knew, with certainty that one day it would again come down to a choice, an victim or your family. He knows what he would choose, what she would choose, so end of story, she had to die. So great discussing with you! I love the complexity of these characters and how I am never sure. With Jensen's portrayal Dean could do a 180 and I would believe. Life isn't that clear cut, especially for a Winchester! Take care, B.J.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Date: 06/03/12 Title: Chapter 20: Chapter 20 - Believe I don't know if Dean complety belives in Sam al the time, but when he doesn't, he has an internal argument to get back to that place where he does..... So true...Dean NEEDS to believe, which is why their conversation in the panic room in Point of No Return was so devastating to both of them. Jensen's eyes and voice perfectly conveyed how sad he was to have lost that belief in Sam. And it about killed Sam to hear it. In the end, Dean chose Sam, he chose to believe because without that he is lost, and life isn't worth living... So he believed. I love how deeply touching and just plain deep our show is! Later, B.J.

You do have a way of seeing into their souls, for sure. I totally enjoyed the ride...and when you first mentioned Cas' coat, well, I felt a little hitch in my throat... I could imagine Dean's red rimmed eyes, Bobby's gruff concern. It was like this story finished because we went to an add break.. I hate one offs, I want more!!! Author's Response: Thanks sooo much! I will admit- this did NOT start off in 1st person POV... but it just wasnt flowing in 3rd and ended up sounding so much better coming from Bobby. I'm really glad you liked it. It was a nice break away from the longer story I just finished up (although I'm not sure its any less angsty.) As for more... Hmmm, there's a nibble of an idea in my head... Summary:

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Date: 18/12/11 Title: Chapter 1: Chapter 1 Trouble is, half the time Dean doesn't trus his instinct.... Even when he's working on pure gut instinct.. Author's Response: I don't know if I agree with that. Dean is pure instinct. I think sometimes he doesn't trust himself or believe in himself, but when he has the gut instinct to do or not do something he usually goes with it...unless Sam talks him out of it and in those instances, he needed to reconsider. I simply love how he always seems to know the right course and I love his certainty. I think that's why when he is floundering, it is so disturbing because Dean Winchester is the one who KNOWS, the one who leads. The one Sam and even Bobby look to for direction. B.J. Summary:

I gotta say...Gosh...I was waiting for something to jump out any minute! You are such a talented weaver of the tale that I bow humbly in your presence, knowing I can never match the glorious way you spin a story... Author's Response: Caroline - you are simply too kind with your words. I'm glad you liked the tension... I tried to make the setting as ominious and oppressive as possible to suit the way Dean was feeling... it only gets worse! LOL And I doubt you have ANYTHING to worry about. You manage QUITE NICELY to spin your own tales- as clearly evidenced by the phenomenal stories you've posted lately!!! T

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Date: 29/01/12 Title: Chapter 7: Chapter 7 - I Need a Hero I think, as he got older, Dean started to see the chinks, I mean REALLY see the chinks in dad's armour. Would stil defend him against any bad word, but seeing him through his brother's eyes, then his own, wiser, adult eyes, he sees a man. Not a hero, not a perfect man...but a man. I thnk Dean loved and hated his dad in some ways, but always there wsa love, always there was respect. He knew his dad didn't choose this life, and lately come to realise that there may be no choice, you just gotta go with the hand you're dealt... Author's Response: I think Dean's thinking on Dad is still forming. It took him a very long time to recognize that maybe Dad wasn't perfect. Dad was who he believed in, who he trusted. It took a lot to damage that belief. And John was heroic, it was only in how he fathered his boys that there was something lacking. Dean is so forgiving, it took a lot for him to be mad at Dad...and when it finally came, that resentment and anger, it consumed him to the point that he forgot the rest. Being a dad to Ben pulled all that back, how scared he was as a kid and how he didn't want that for Ben. So devastating to know that sometimes you can't control the world, you can't control your reactions...that best intentions sometimes aren't enough. I so want Dean and John to have a talk, a meeting as men, to hash out their issues and for Dean to move past his anger and find acceptance, for both his dad and himself. Good men caught in impossible circumstance! Thanks again, B.J.

Would Bobby stick around? Good way to make me think... Do you think the boys ever told Bobby about heaven? Author's Response: I am sure the boys told Bobby about heaven! It's funny, because even them knowing about heaven, it doesn't make it easier to lose someone. It was definitely Bobby with the beer, definitely! Later, B.J.

But at least he got to feel what it was like to be a father, and realise that he did, indeed, consider them his sons...he admitted it to himself.... Author's Response: So many never get the chance to know how they would have been as a dad. With all the turmoil in his life, at least Bobby had that and best of all, he recognized it and cherished the boys. I so love how he fought for them and to stay with them. I do think he and Karen were married awhile, at least I hope so. Thanks again, B.J.

I had saved this story to read as I knew I would be having a quiet weekend, I didn't realise that I had inspired it!!! And I have to tell, you, a few short words had tears in my eyes, it was exactly what I was thinking, but only you can put into words so poignantly... Author's Response: You truly did inspire this, as I hadn't even thought about putting my Bobby-love into words. Once you nudged me, well, this is what came out! It is a pleasure to get inside Bobby's head and get him to voice all those deep thoughts & feelings he has for the boys. Later, B.J.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Date: 11/12/11 Title: Chapter 2: Chapter 2 - Loss Bleeds Over Us All I think John just hurt so much, and he never wanted his boys to hurt like that, but he also saw them as soldiers in the war on evil first, and sons second. He never really thought of them as men. Not like Bobby did, when he was talking to Dean about letting his little brother ride Satan into the pit. He saw a man, he valued the men. John saw little boys, who needed discipline, order, bossing around, but no room for their own thoughts. He didn't trust them to make their own decisions.. This is a beautiful story... Author's Response: Oh, so true! That exchange in DMB when Sam said he couldn't treat them like children and John exploded that they WERE his children! Breaks my heart that they never got to be on that more even ground, John never got to see his boys turn into the men they became. I think he was on the road to that, and I think he respected their skills, but he was always in fear of losing them. Under so much fear there, he surrendered being their father to keep them safe. I loved Bobby when he voiced Dean's (and his) fear that they were most afraid of losing Sam to the pit, but that he was a man, someone who was strong and true and they could be proud of. Such powerful love from all, Bobby just had a little more distance and perspective on who the boys were and what THEY needed! Love discussing all of this with you! Later, B.J.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Date: 20/01/12 Title: Chapter 4: Chapter 4 - Lucky in Love Had he known she would be dead in three days, he would have told her anything... I sill don't think he would have given her children. And then, later, he had the boys. When Dean entered his dream in 'Dream a little dream of me" the one thing that snapped Bobby out of that loop of nightmare was Dean saying "You are like a father to me" First time we got to hear this, see this, and we didn't forget. Neither did Bobby... Author's Response: Hindsight, right? And I loved that Bobby's biggest regret was that fight and never making it right, bigger than having to kill her. And how tragic for him that he now knows that unrest in a person leaves you open to possession? But Bobby did get the boys and he loved them and fathered them and they turned out GREAT! He deserved to be a father and he was a great one! Always a pleasure discussing the show with you! Later, B.J. |
