"And every night he woke to the same sound.  If it wasn’t Sammy it was Daddy.  Every night he woke to the sound of crying."  The sad glimpse into a four-year old child's living nightmare.

"...when Sammy was sure there was a monster in his closet, it had been up to Dean to assure him that there was definitely nothing there. And even if there had been, Dean would never have let it hurt Sammy. Dean would never let anything hurt Sammy."  How seriously he cared for Sammy, even as a child.

As you describe Dean's fear that he would be left alone and the emptiness of his existence when Sam finally does leave, I felt a deeper respect for Dean.  He lived with his fears, knowing that someday they would become reality, all the while providing stability for everyone else.

Author's Response: Thanks so much for that thoughtful review!  I really can't see Dean's early years having been much fun for him really.  It's a wonder he's as reasonably well-balanced as he is!

Oh man, I need to remember to grab a box of tissues when I read your work!  This was so so beautiful.  Love the way you perfectly placed certain lines from IMTOD.  It was wonderful.

I read your summary, read 'Dean' and 'Angsty' and knew it would be my kind of fic!

Kate

Author's Response: Oh yeah, 'angsty' is definitely the word for this one!  One of these days I'll be able to write Sam angst as easily as I can write Dean angst!

This is excellent! It's true that Dean spends so much more time taking care of others than taking care of himself. It's why he's so incredible to write about: so much angst and selflessness...this is really good! Very true, very real. Great job!

Author's Response: Aah, full of angsty goodness... And that's just Dean, not the story!!  Glad you liked it!

I always love the weechesters, nice job blending IMTOD with flashbacks - Thanks for the read - k

Author's Response: Glad you enjoyed it!  Yeah, I'm a sucker for Kiddie Winchesters too!

This is the most touching story.  So perfect in so few, but meaningful words. It also perfectly illuminates how Dean does view himself just like he said in AHBL. How he wanted his life to have meaning and purpose, and he always found that thru Sammy.

I absolutely love this story. Thank you, Angel.

Author's Response:

I'm glad you enjoyed it, Angel!  In retrospect, it does kind of fit quite well with AHBL, which is a testament to how well SN's writers have maintained Dean's fundamental character throughout the season.

As you can probably tell, I was quite angsty and emotional myself when I wrote that one!

That was awesome  - POOR DEAN! When you read it like that, it's a real catalogue of disaster from childhood to adulthood. And yet he still manages to put everyone before himself, still manages to love his family completely. And this beautiful little piece really showed that. Well done!

P.S. I read this a while ago, don't know why I didn't review it at the time. Someone must have come to the door! Realised on re-reading that I hadn't reviewed. Sorry!

Author's Response:

Hah hah - maybe you reviewed it elsewhere - I get about a bit!  Thanks for reviewing here though!  I agree, Dean's life after Mary has been pretty tragic in places, which is I think why he holds on to Sam (and John) so hard - they're pretty much the brightest parts of his life, despite often being so dark themselves...

I think I'm gonna cry :(  Ouch, ouch and more ouch.

Dean is so tied to family, so continually living in a fear he won't admit to.

Dean without Sam is not a pretty picture...he would erode away so fast...probably fall to darkness and his own despair.

You've illustrated his character so well it hurts.

You're a damn good writer.  I hope you know that.

Thanks for sharing, I look forward to more :D

Author's Response: Ooh, paddle away!!  I was a bit over-angsty when I wrote this one!

I had forgotten how much I love this story. How you perfectly captured Dean's life from the little boy who stood up and took care of Sammy and Dad to the man who continues to take care of them.

Every line from the show is expertly placed and elaborated on, revealing the true Dean. So poignant and insightful. I loved John's talk to Dean at the end of IMTOD and you beautifully enriched that here.

Absolutely love it. Great job as usual, B.J.

Author's Response: Aw bless ya!  Yes, I over all emotional Dean Girlie when I wrote this one...

Oh, lovely and aching.

Author's Response: Thanks for that!  That's pretty much how I felt after watching IMTOD, to be honest!!  (Well, the 'aching' part, anyway!)

What a wonderful tangle of emotion and memory. That line "Don't be scared, Dean" gets me every time. Every. Time. And I loved how you tried to untangle it mid-way only to have Sammy come back different -- come back Sam. Poor Dean.

Nicely done.

Author's Response: I do try not to cry during that scene in IMTOD.  Seen it about twenty or so times now and still end up a blubbering heap when John starts crying...

AWWWWW! (sniffle!) That was sooo cool- I love how you blended in all the dialogue from IMTOD. That's one of my fave S2 epis.

Author's Response:

Hey I got a review!  (More than I got on ffnet...!  Actually I did get a couple on there!)

Well at least we know the reviews work.  Let's see if the responses do...
