I also wanted to comment on Sam's characterization in this (and please excuse typos in my previous review!) It was a shame we didn't get to see Sam's deep emotional reaction to Dean's deal---until the very end of S3. You showed us how realistically he would've been feeling...stellar writing!
Author's Response: Thanks again! Yes, I loved exploring how torn up Sam would be over the deal and I also loved having him see Dean in a new light. I love when either boy has that awakening where they realize that they don't know everything about their brother. This show does such a good job of showing all their layers, but I do think they didn't delve as deeply into how Sam felt about the deal. Just not enough time, I suppose, but that is where fanfics come in to fill the void of what we desire and what they are able to show in only 22 episodes. Thanks again, B.J.

Wow, BJ, another amazing story! I know this was written awhile ago, but I had heard about it as a marvelous example of understanding Dean's character---it moscertainly is that! So very poignent the way Lani is drawn to the depth and frailty that is Dean...while also seeing the brave gallantry that is also always there. Well done!

Author's Response: Thanks so much! I too would love for Dean's ONS to turn into something meaningful and for Sammy to witness that. There is always more depth to Dean than what you see on the surface and I do think he cares deeply, so it stands to reason he would connect on a real level with someone like Lani who does see beneath his facade. I think the system ate my first attempt .... I don't remember if I commented earlier, so I just wanted to say how lovely this ficlet is. The contrasts between Sam's private fear and anger, and Dean reaching out just to find something warm to hold ... beautiful. The girl was so very real, too, with her own wishes and hurts and seeing something wonderful in Dean. I loved her just for what she gave to him. And the ending, the dance and Sam's realisations and her walking away ... just ouch. But in a very wonderful way. Such a touching and poignant piece, and I'm so glad you shared it with us. Author's Response: Thank you for being persistent and writing such a lovely review. I love that readers responded so well to Lani; it is very risky writing a OFC with the fans so protective of Dean. I loved letting Dean have someone real for just a moment in time that did see him and love him. He deserves that and so much more. And of course it was necessary for Sam to see another side of Dean and realize that he doesn't know his brother as well as he thinks. That was one of the most heartbreaking/beautiful stories I have ever read. There are tears in my eyes right now. I was holding my breath when Dean came out and saw her again. WOW! Great work!
Author's Response: Thank you for such a lovely review. Dean's whole life is so heartbreaking and he has too few beautiful moments. I love giving him a special moment for him to hold onto when times get worse. Of course, there is no happy ending for him, at least for now. This story just insisted on being written. I so wish Dean could have a moment like this in the series. Just one moment to feel truly loved. Beautiful! I've talked to others about Dean's sex life and how I thought he was more bark than bite, so to speak, but I'm always voted down. This story is so much how I see Dean; you've captured what I believe to be the real Dean so well!
Author's Response: Wow Theresa, I am so glad we see Dean the same. Honestly, with Jensen's sensitive portrayal, I can't see how others can't see this as the real Dean. Especially now, as he has grown and how his past relationships have shown how much he wants something real. Like everything else in his life, what you see is not necessarily what you get.
