Great story!  The title and quote at the beginning are wonderful and truly express the burden that befalls John and later his children.

I love how fatherly John is.  Most stories paint him as totally sefl-absorbed in his grief.  You show that he is a man in mourning who truly loves his sons.

Author's Response:

I'm glad that you enjoyed the one-shot. I hate writers who portray John in a cruel, dark light who cares anything but hunting. It's a poor vision of the great man John Winchester actually was.

What a wonderful recount of all three of our Winchesters post Lawrence. You have nailed all three of them, showed how this trauma moulded them to the men they became, and how their relationships with each grew, how their relationships are unique but not always understood by each other. Cos boy do we know that they sure do get each other and they sure don't each other. I saw the beginnings of this strongly in this fic of yours!

I am looking forward to exploring your Dark Horse Series now that I have found it, so you'll be hearing alot more from me. I loved your intro to your series, it drew me in. This little one-shot felt like the perfect place to start for me.

Author's Response:

I'm glad that you're looking forward to exploring the series. It's something that I sort of just stumbled upon when I realized how many John metas I was writing. I'm glad you think this is a good intro to the boys' lives post the fire. Thanks for the review, and I'm glad you're enjoying the series in general.

Again, terrific job with this story.  I love the way you portray John, he is a man consumed with revenge, but he's also concerned and loves his children, people often make him too harsh.  I like your blend.  Thanks for the read - K

Author's Response: I love stories where John's a strong figure who wasn't abusive. It's how I saw him in the actual series. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

This is a really beautiful story, yet so sad. Love the way you portray John. It's tearing him apart to see his boys hurt, especially Dean. Like he tells Dean many years later during "In my time of dying": "I made you grow up too fast... you took care of Sammy - you did that, you didin't complain once... I am so proud of you". Reading your story I suddenly rememered all of these lines. So now we know how things could have happened back then after Mary's death. Thanks for a great read!

Author's Response: I'm glad that you enjoyed it. I love paiting John in a positive light, showing him as a caring father who loved his sons more than anyone knew. I'm glad you could connect this story with an episode. I love when everything fits together like that. Thanks for reading.

Awesome WeeChester story!  I loved how tender John was with his boys and how he tried so much to comfort Dean and hoped he would talk!

Author's Response: I'm all about 'John was a good father'. I simply can't stand stories that illustrate him as an abusive father. Glad you liked it.
