Wonderful. I like that it's Sam who is the most realistic brother for this moment, and his understanding of his brother's needs and fears. It has been one of the great tragedies of his life that he and John were so much alike neither could give in to the other, even when they knew how much love lay between them. And it was one of the great sorrows of Dean's life that he was strong enough to bend for both so often, he started to mistake his strength for weakness. John never could bend, and in the end, it broke his family apart. But nothing can lessen the worth of his sacrifice in this scene. He died for his sons. He never aspired to more. Loved it.

You captured Dean's feelings wonderfully. What an awesome piece of writing. Excellent job!

hey, i miss this one? It's a very nice one, always found IMTOD's end abrupt, so that's really great...

This little ficlet well and truly blew me away. You captured everything about our boys in that horrifying moment John was all but lost in those three monumental words. I loved how you structured this piece, how each idea hung off those three words and were elaborated under their influence.

My fav lines of yours - "And the absolute terror with which his brother’s statement was spoken shook Sam to the core. John Winchester would not live just because his sons wanted him to, just because Dean had declared to the world that he needed to. Sometimes, Sam knew, some things were just beyond your reach" awesome, bravo!

These brilliant words shouted Deans need - "John Winchester was his father, his idol, his lifeline in a world of quicksand" - a standout line.

And these must be amonst the saddest words ever uttered in fandom - "to be someone’s child, not the orphan he knew he was about to become" *sob*

I could hardly breath while I read this. Congrats on a stunning piece of work.

Very powerful!  The thoughts you've expressed in this piece are beyond what I would have imagined running through Dean's head.  The importance of John Winchester to his son is more than that of a father, but a savior.  Dean's doubts of who he is are held at bay as long as his father lives.  Sooo amazing!

The last words are are startling and comforting at the same time.

Fantastic work!

I always felt that IMTOD ended too quickly without delving into the devastation of John's death - yes we get it in later episodes, but not the immediate reaction. Thanks for filling it in.

This is incredibly sad!!! Truly, very real though. It makes so much sense, especially if you can relate to this kind of thing. Beautifully poignant.
