This is absolutely heartbreaking.  I've thought about this a lot and I reckon those boys probably went hungry more often than not when John was out because he was too focused on the hunt and what he had lost instead of focusing on what he still had.  The thought of Dean scraping out the peanut butter jar because he's so hungry made me tear up!  Good job!

Author's Response: Thank you! I felt MEAN writing this! But I feel like it's plausible, with everything this little family had going on. It can be hard to stretch a dollar even when you're grown, let alone when you're fourteen and trying to raise your baby brother.

Wow, what an incredibly sad story! I had hoped John would notice that things weren't okay, but then I guess the way you wrote it is much more believable. But I'll always be a sucker for happy endings. Ha, I still don't know why I'm such a fan of SPN.

Author's Response: Ha! Sorry, no happy endings here. What's funny is, I also prefer to read happy endings. I'm just not very good at writing them! Thanks for reading anyway!

Now, I really want to smack John upside the head. Grrrrrr.....How can he be so oblivious to his sons' needs. I really want to cry for Dean and Sam. Makes me wonder what Dean had to do to keep Sam safe and fed when John was gone longer. Thanks for a great story.

Author's Response: Good point. Another day and Dean would have been out stealing, and who knows where they would have slept? I doubt poor Dean would let himself give in to worry like this on a daily basis, but it had to have happened now and then. Thanks for reading!

This chapter just about broke my heart to read. Dean really is scared and not knowing what to do, after all, he is really just a boy, too. I can easily see this scenario happening to the boys. I really want to slap John upside his head. Looking forward to reading John's point of view.

How terribly sad for Dean and for Sammy, too. Sam really had his eyes opened here. Poor Dean, how will he get by. Loved the way he told Sam that he would take care of the bully in the end even though he was crushed by Sammy's thoughtlessness. Looking forward to reading Dean's POV.

Author's Response: I didn't think Dean could ultimately allow a bully who messed with Sam to go unpunished. But the poor kid's got so much on him already! Dean's chapter is finished and there will be a third chapter from John's POV. Thanks so much!

Okay, this is just heartbreaking! I don't normally get very affected by fiction, but this one really hit home. We often have stories or have it alluded to how much Dean sacrificed for Sam... But it's always framed like it was no big deal and Dean just blows it off.... It wouldn't have been easy and there would had to have been times when it just became too much and he just broke!

You conveyed one of those times sooooo poignantly...

Well done! I can't wait for more!

Author's Response: Thanks so much! I'm new to the show and catching up by checking seasons out of the library. I just finished Season Three and young Dean and Sam in the Christmas episode made me ache. This story's been brewing ever since.
