Really great job capturing Dean's feelings.

Right after hearing those words on the ep, I thought Sam, don't you know what you're saying? You're thinking that Dean taking care of himself is a good thing, but all he's hearing is "I don't need you anymore." How is that possibly a good thing in Dean's book?

Thanks!  Sam just doesn't understand the way Dean's mind works but I can totally relate! :)

Nice little tag, here. You got into Dean's head and stayed there. Dean is one of those people who don't believe in the compartmentalized lifetyle; his life and his work are indistinguishable in his mind: Dean is truly his brother's keeper.

Thanks Sue.  In the back of my mind I always think that even during that year with Lisa and Ben, Dean felt lost without Sammy to take care of.

I appreciate you taking time to leave a review!

Totally believable.  I could so imagine Sam's words that he didn't need Dean anymore reverberating around in his head but I'm pretty sure Sam would not have said them if he was not doped up on love potion and thinking Becky was the be all and end all;  I think he will always need Dean and vice versa.   And with Sam saying that Dean could finally get to take care of himself, I'm pretty sure that he wasn't pushing Dean away, just wanted Dean to do things he wanted to do, think of himself for once as his whole life he has put others first and his needs and desires last.  I think Sam feels some guilt that Dean has spent most of his life taking care of him and he wants to be there for his big brother as much as he is for him.

Loved how you had Dean quickly making it to Sam's bed as his nightmare got worse and pressing the scar on his hand to bring him out of it, like Sam does when Lucifer visits during the day, and could so see Sam asking Dean to stay until he fell asleep as he still needs his big brother even though he is getting his head around what is going on in his head.

You haven't lost your touch girl and thanks for the dedication. :)

Author's Response:

I think you're right, Sarah.  I think Sam does feel guilty that Dean has always taken care of him but he wants Dean to think he doesn't have to anymore even though he really does still need him.  It's just going back to that self-sacrificing cycle they always go through.

Thanks for the awesome review and the pretty stars!

You know I just love that you picked this bit of the episode to focus on. I agree that Dean is soooo absolutely defined by his role in the family, his role as Sam's protector, provider, and guardian, that even though Sam meant well by saying he didn't "need him anymore" - it isnt the freedom that most might want. To Dean - its damning... and he's lost!

It's also just so beautiful how you crafted the ending- Sam- despite his assurances to Dean that he's doing fine and "doesnt need him" still obviously does... reaching out to that solid (stone #1) comfort. Deep down, no matter what Sam might say, I gotta believe he really knows that Dean is as constant and reliable as the sun rising in the morning. (and damn if that doesnt inspire a whole 'nother plot bunny -LOL)

Well- I could ramble on and on- but you know how much I love the story and how absolutely ecstatic I am to see you back!

Author's Response:

Thanks Tree!  I think it's been on Dean's mind for awhile that Sam might not need him I don't think when Sam says Dean can take care of himself for a change that it means anything except he wants what's best for his brother.  I think Sam feels like he's been a burden to Dean.

It's good to be back.  I hoping it's not just a one time thing!  LOL
