Ah, Cass....how he'd changed from the straight arrow we first saw at the beginning of season four.

I'm hoping that he can be saved, and that somewhere deep inside, he remembers the words he said to Dean about thinking of him as a brother. I'm also wondering whether Sam may be the key to helping him - like from one recovered addict to another. I know that some people didn't like it, but I actually found the parallels between Cas and season four Sam quite interesting.

Unless Cas is too far gone....

Still, like you, I'm hoping....

I think you got the balance just right. It was hard to pick something positive out of season three, with the countdown always going on in the background and both boys getting increasingly desperate in their own ways as Dean's year came to a close.

And Dean, trying to make Sam smile and forget about the deal for a while - just like he did in the car on the way to confront Lilith, with only a few hours to go before midnight and the coming of the hounds.

The line about home and Bobby was awesome, and so true. If only Sam had felt at home there, things might have turned out differently....

Funnily enough, there haven't been too many stories that pick up from the night it all went to hell for John Winchester - well, not that I've stumbled across, anyway.

So this was a great little aside, and a good peek into John's state of mind in those shattering minutes after the fire, dealing with Mary's death and suddenly becoming a single parent - and possibly wondering what the hell had caused the fire and made her scream like that.

And so telling, that last line. Because it's ultimately what he did, isn't it? Protecting the boys was literally the last thing he did, both as a flesh-and-blood man and as a spirit newly released from hell.

Love me some Bobby...*hugs chapter*

He's such a great surrogate father to the boys, and I was thrilled to have it acknowledged in canon at the start of season five - even though it was voiced by a demon - lol.

Loved the Bobby POV on the hunt, hurt Winchesters and their habit of not asking for help even when they so desperately need it. And adored the fact that Dean surrendered - even if only for one night.

Bobby's right - they're family, blood or not.

Also....*kicks self sharply in backside*...ouch - that hurt my poor old lady legs...so sorry I lost this story. I reviewed chapter one, then real life dragged me away kicking, screaming and clawing the ground, and I never got back to it.

Well, it's Sunday night, there's nothing I want to watch on television, and I feel like doing a bit of reading, because I'm wussing out of fixing a chapter I'm working on - I mean, I'm waiting for inspiration to strike. So here I am, back again.

How terribly sad this is considering what happened in 6.20. I know Cas doesn't want anything to happen to the Winchesters but he still betrayed them (at least in Dean's eyes). Thanks for a great POV of Cas on the boys!

Author's Response:

Thanks Moira, for all your kind words (and all the reviews!)  I'm glad you enjoyed this.  And I'm still waiting to see what will happen with Cas next week!

I wish Sam had gone and stayed with Bobby after Dean's deal came due. I believe he wouldn't have been temped by Ruby (the evil bi...). He would have stayed true to Dean's promise and they would not have gotten into so much of the mess they wound up in. Thanks for a great shot of Dean's POV.

I just love Wee Dean and Sam fics! My heart just broke here for the whole family. John's thought of Hell is kinda foreshadowing the future of all 3 here. Thanks for another great one shot.

Awwwhhhhh....Bobby is the greatest. Love how he sees Dean and Sam as his boys. I can easily see Dean taking on the spirit or whatever it was once it had it's sights set on Sam. No one hurts his Sammy! Good thing they have Bobby to take care of them. Another great chapter!

yeah you're on the right track. I have a tear in my eye and and small smile on my face - perfect.

Author's Response: Ah...exactly what I was aiming at:  tears and smiles.  Thanks for letting me know, and I'm so glad you're enjoying!

Sam Winchester, not talking.  That’s a bad sign right there.

I loved that line- especially coming from Dean- who never likes to talk yet knows that when his brother ISNT talking- something is so very wrong in the world.

I also LOVED this section.

.  “Where are we?”

“Home,” I say, opening the door to the sound of barking and the sight of Bobby standing in the doorway, waiting, welcoming.  Bobby, with his infinite knowledge of everything supernatural.  And everything Winchester.

This *is* home.  At least as close to it as we ever get, and I just hope that Sam remembers that.

I kinda thought it was always a bit odd that they never really showed that as much in the show- granted I think they ran out of season that year... but I always thought Dean would have been pushing Sam towards Bobby and been providing for Bobby to watch out for the kid more...

And I do love that now- Bobby's place is HOME for the boys... or as close to a place they've likely ever known.

Another great chapter hun! Well done!

Author's Response:

Thanks so much...your reviews mean so much, especially when I'm feeling a little insecure.  And I'm really glad that you're enjoying them!

I wonder what would have happened if Bobby had watched out more for Sam (if Sam had let him) while Dean was gone (though Bobby wasn't in the best shape himself.)  The story would certainly be a lot different.

I'm glad they're finally learning to consider Bobby's place as home!

AWww--- I missed this one. Playing catchup I guess. Really loving this series- but this one tugs at the heart. Always love the preseries stuff- even though I'm not a huge Wee! fan... but there's just something about even WeeDean already watching out for Sammy.

I love the bit of foreboding there too-  the emergency lights reminding John of a scene from Hell.. poor guy. If he only knew???

Heading off to Chap. 4...

My favourite so far was Bobby's POV because it was so like Bobby. You spoke from his point of view and understanding of the boys so well.

Please continue!

Author's Response: I love Bobby, and I'm glad you think I did him justice.  Thanks for the review!

Love to hear a Bobby POV every now and again and this is a good one, gruff and matter of fact but full of warmth and understanding of his boys.

Author's Response: Thank you, Amber, and I'm glad you enjoyed this!

I just love Bobby, and your voice for him is simply perfect. The writing of the action was incredibly vivid- I could SEE Dean on the spirit's back- tenaciously "wrestling" it- Bobby's narration so in character describing it- brought it to life. I could see him too- that pause as he watches it playing out before him, that Bobby-esque look of worry/frustration and even a smidge of appreciation as he see's Dean battling for his brother's life.

He just knows what makes these boys tick- from how they were raised to how they function as near extensions of one another. And he knows his place in the mix...

Nicely done and I'm really looking forward to more in this series!

Thanks so much!  I love Bobby too, and I'm glad the boys have him to lean on (and vice-versa, now and then...)

Having just gotten over a pretty nasty stomach bug myself, I can fully sympathise with Dean on this one.

Loved how Sam constantly monitored his brother to see just how little or how much help Dean needed, and laughed at the "Leave me the f*** alone" sign. That's Dean all right. I'm sure his last words will contain that famous line "I'm fine!"

Loved the schmoop - bring it on!

As to whether you should keep posting, my answer is - ALWAYS. There may not be many reviews, but keep an eye on your read count. You have a whole army of lurkers out there, who love and follow everything you write. You may never know it, but your stories are the bright spot in someone's day.

Author's Response:

Thank you so much for this, Jules.  Your words just made my day!  I'm always a little insecure about my stories, especially since I'm now betaless, so I appreciate all the encouragement here.  (And as an inveterate lurker myself, I understand how hard it is to review, even when you really love a story. )

I hope you're feeling better.  I'm posting the next part now, and it doesn't have any nasty stomach bugs in it (though it does have a little h/c for you!)

Schmoop away- this was awesome and reminds me of better days between them. I love the interaction between the brothers- even though Dean is fairly silent- its very 'spot on.' Well done there. I always adore hurt or sick Dean... and I love it even more when Sam just does the right thing- knowing how and when to work him as he does so well here.  He just knows his brother so well- what makes him tick- and in this case- what makes him sick.

Great writing and I'm looking forward to more.

Author's Response:

Thanks so much for the wonderful review, and I'm so glad you liked it.  This was kind of a break from my usual angsty stories, but (be warned) some of the later parts are heading that way.  Next one should be some more schmoop with a dash of h/c, though, so I hope you like it.  I'll try to post soon.

Definitely keep posting! I love how Sam finally realized something is wrong with Dean and he keeps his distance but yet is oh so watchful of his older brother. Looking forward to more of my favorite type of story: sick/hurt Dean and comforting Sam.

Author's Response: Thanks, Moira!  I'll try to post the next part soon, but just to warn you,  not all the parts are sick Dean/comforting Sam.  Hope you enjoy them anyway!
