I have some coal for you, Nancy, but not because you've been bad. I'm hoping this coal will help to keep burning the fire that fuels your muse. I read this at Christmas time, and loved it! Too often we get caught up in the "silly season" and forget those who don't celebrate, and who find all our stressing out and running around like headless chooks a bit bewildering to say the least. Have to say, I love Christmas, but I don't enjoy the stress that goes with it. Because December is the start of our summer in the Southern Hemisphere, we have the added joy of Christmas shopping in the heat...and tempers tend to flare when the shops are busy, the traffic is heavy, and some idiot has just nicked the parking space you've been waiting for patiently for the last ten minutes while the previous occupant loaded the contents of an overloaded shopping trolley into their boot. *sigh*.... And Dave is absolutely right - why wait for an excuse to get together with family? Why wait for Christmas - just do it whenever. The true meaning of Christmas is quite often lost in the shuffle of commercialism and the rush to make things bigger and better. I loved Dave's rant, and adored the fact that you dedicated this to all who volunteer for these shifts. Oh, and have to say, loved Dean playing possum there at the end - makes sense that he'd have woken at the voices and just listened, getting the lay of the land and ascertaining that both he and his brother were all right. Thank you so much for posting this, Nancy. It is truly a gem, and very deserving of its blue ribbon. And a wonderfully cool treat on a hot and sticky February day. Jules

Great story! Love the end..."Merry Chirstmas...Bitch." I can sooo hear Dean say that.
Author's Response: Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for letting me know!

This is such a gorgeous story! i totally love it that you're kinda dedicating it to all the people working on christmas eve. I also like the way Sam handles the situation – he's not too cuddly and not too cool, just perfect. Thanks for writing and sharing with us! Barbara
Author's Response: Thank you so much, and especially for taking the time to write! I always appreciate those who have to work odd or inconvenient shifts (I've had to do it myself.) My dad told me many years ago that those of us who don't celebrate Christmas should always volunteer to cover for others (and it's not just emergency workers who have to work on holidays--he worked at the IRS and at the time I was working at the UN.) I'm glad you liked my Sam. I don't write him that often, so I'm never sure if I get him right. Nancy

Very nice. I'm a bit late reading this, but I like reading Christmas stories after the fact, stretching out the warmth of the season to January. I was expecting Castiel to make an appearance, since this is season 4, and, hey, maybe he did, appearing before the drunken Hoskins and admonishing them to do the right thing and call in the Impala's location? Sue
Author's Response: I'm so glad you enjoyed this. I thought the boys needed a little holiday time alone (though Cas as the voice of conscience for Hoskins is a great idea!...He could be the Spirit of Christmas present...) Nancy

Lovely, heart-warming tale - perfect for keeping all this cold weather at bay. Thanks for a sweet read. Jane
Author's Response: Thanks so much for your lovely words, and sorry I was so late in answering. Hope your new year is going well!

Hi, I tried to review this one-shot before, but somehow I couldn't post it. Let's see if it works now.
Lovely one-shot about Christmas, Dave's rant about Christmas was actually quite funny. I love Christmas but I can understand that there are people who act like a Grinch during this period.
Author's Response: Thanks so much, and I'm glad you enjoyed it. (And I'm not really a Grinch!) Nancy

Wonderful wonderful story. Reads beautifully. I am glad it was Sam who had all the realisations. I always think Dean has been waiting for him all these years. Thank you for the Christmas gift. Jo
Author's Response: Thanks so much for your kind words! I usually write Dean, but I felt this was something that Sam needed to realize, and I'm glad you enjoyed it! Nancy

I'm very rarely on this site anymore, but I'm glad I dropped by and saw your story. Tree has great taste and her blue ribbon encouraged me to read on. I ADORE this - and my favourite part was Dave! "We" all get so wrapped up in Christmas that it's easy to lose sight of how many people are just swept up into the whirlwind and it means nothing to them. I really liked how inclusive this was... a little hurt!Dean never goes astray, either - but this story was just so much more....
Author's Response: I'm so glad you decided to drop by the site, thrilled that you liked the story and overjoyed that you wrote to say so...especially that you liked Dave. And as one who's been trying for years to avoid the Christmas whirlwind (love that term!) I thank you for recognizing how hard it can be. And, of course, I couldn't miss a chance to write some hurt!Dean... Thanks again for all your kind words! Nancy

love the story, needed some brotherly scmoop. thankyou and merry christmas or happy holidays or whatever.
Author's Response: So glad you liked this. We all need some schmoop this year, don't we? Thanks for reviewing, and happy holidays! Nancy

well no coal for you from me, loved the story. Thankyou for my favourite things - caring big brother, hurt Dean and worried, caring Sam. Have a peaceful holiday.
Author's Response: I'm so glad you liked this, and thanks so much for reviewing! We haven't had much of your/our favorite things this season, have we? (Maybe Sera needs some coal in her stocking...) Happy holidays!

I really enjoyed your story and found it heartwarming that Dean tried so hard to give Sam a nice Christmas. I will admit I was rather put off by Dave's rant (a little too long and very preachy). Other than that I enjoyed the story with hurt/Dean and caring Sam. Thanks for the story, I'd say Happy Holidays or Merry Christmas but I'm not sure it would be well received! :)
Author's Response: Good wishes are always appreciated (as are reviews!) And yes, I might have been a little heavy-handed, but Christmas cheer can be a little heavy-handed, too (especially to those of us who don't celebrate it...) <g> Thanks again for taking the time to write, and hope you have a wonderful holiday!

I'll do you one better than a review, Nancy... this was an awesome story - especially the sentiment behind it. Too often we get wrapped up in the commercialism of the holidays or we think that Christmas or any holiday is just the only time to get together with family or remember friends.. You've done a great job of pointing out that every day is special and shouldnt be taken for granted. And as a former paramedic firefighter- that worked a whole bunch of Christmases... thanks for the shout-out to all those that are still out there on the front lines making things safe so others can enjoy the holidays with their families! Merry Christmas! Tree
Author's Response: Wow! Thanks so much! I was a little nervous about posting (was afraid I'd be pelted with lumps of coal) so I'm so glad you not only understood but enjoyed! And yes, I do appreciate all those who are working behind the scenes on holidays (and all the rest of the time, too!) Nancy

Here you go, a piece of coal. (Though I though that was a New Year's Day tradition, not Christmas?) Well you busted poor old Dean up pretty good for Christmas but at least he got to call Sam bitch, eh? For old times sake. Liked the Wincicles!
Author's Response: Well, around here, you get coal in your Christmas stocking if you've been bad! Either way, thanks so much for your review! Nancy
