"And then I'd look at Dad, cleaning guns, reading dusty old books, bruised and battered inside and out and I wondered why Mom being and angel in Heaven had sent Dad to Hell."  What a powerful statement!

"But why doesn’t someone save him? Why doesn’t someone save my dad? Isn’t he worth saving? Doesn’t he deserve that?"  I could visualize a young Dean wondering this, searching to understand why his life was so unfair, what his family had done to deserve this misery.

"Please don't ask me that, Sammy...You don't want to know.  I don't want you to know."  And "I just wanted you to have what I didn't any more."  That nearly broke my heart.  Poor Dean, taking on the world just to spare his little brother.  This is when it all began.

"Because people talk about the End of the World like it hasn’t already happened.  I can tell you the exact date the world ended: November 2nd, 1983."  The grief in these simple statement is exquisite and yet so understated!!

Author's Response: I think I was really getting my emo on for Dean in this one!  I do really admire his ability to put everything - including his own wellbeing - aside to protect his family.  Thanks for another lovely review.

Author's Response: It really was angst-o-rama when I wrote this one!  I'm glad you liked it!

Author's Response: Aw, glad you enjoyed it!  A little bit of angst goes a long way sometimes...!

This brought tears to my eyes. I'm serious. I'm crying right now. You put so much emotion, so much sadness and hopelessness and yet, hope, into this that it is simply overwhelming. Too much for words. This is beautiful, iris. Just gorgeous.

Author's Response:

*gulp* Ooh, thank you!  I think this was probably the biggest slice of angst-o-rama I've ever written - AHBL2 just had that effect on me!

Thanks so much for the lovely comment!

As I said to another author: you people writing AHBL tags are going to kill. me. dead. This is beautiful Irismay. It has such lovely pacing and rhythm, moving from the past to the present  and demonstrating so clearly how sad Dean's life has been. Because he has always been the buffer between Sam and the world. There are lots of lines that made me a bit teary, but this one is my favourite:

“But who’s going to take care of you, Dean?”

Lovely. Many thanks!

Author's Response: I think I was in fangirlie-wanna-hug-Dean-so-bad mode when I wrote this...! The tears really were unintentional... (heh!)

Dude- you snuck this one up on me! Very cool! And yeah- I know what you mean about one-shots and tags - never did em before either- and god with the VS- you'd think thats about all we'd even consider having time for! hahaha!

Author's Response:

...And I didn't really have time for this!  Just ask Kitts!

Ta for reading ducks!  Means a lot!

That was poignant and so emotional. Beautiful work irismay.

This is eveything I thought Dean would have running through his mind. All the memories of his brother. You did such a great job!

Author's Response:

Glad it seemed in character.  The Dead!Sammy scene absolutely killed me, and I just couldn't let it pass by without comment!

Thanks for reading!

didn't see the season finale but read by curiosity, and god my eyes are full with tears. I'm a completely desperate case...

Author's Response:

Oops - hope I've not ruined the finale for you!  Hope you get to see it soon as it was incredible!

Thanks for spoilering yourself by reading anyway!

Love this.  Even with everything they've gone through, they both still have faith in each other.

Author's Response:

I think this season has shown that, even with the wider world of the hunters being revealed, the boys still can depend on each other more than anything else in the world...

Thanks for reading!

I really enjoyed this.  I'm always up for more insight into the psyche of Dean.  I am ever so slightly (yeah right!) obessessed with Dean and the whole show.  I think that Dean is a very deep and complex character that deserves to be explored.

So thanks for giving us this little tidbit.

Gengen

Author's Response:

Oh totally - About Dean being very complicated and about being obsessed with him and all things SN!

Glad you enjoyed the story!

Wow. Love this. Thank you. Why can't we get that episode out of our heads? We've all certainly been playing with Dean's pain, but that epi just laid it all out there, and here you do it again. I love that you have really captured that underlying youthful innocence that Dean somehow still manages to have even through his dedication to his family and the pounding he seems to take every day. Damn. Just when I thought I was getting over that scene....

Author's Response:

I know - I suspect we're all going to be continually obsessed by AHBL right through the summer...  We'll still be reading tags in September, I'm sure!

One of the things I like most about what they've done with Dean's character in season 2 is how they've made him a little bit more emotional, and a little bit more knowable.  I know Jensen said he had trouble laying Dean bare in Shadow - look how he's come on since then!

Oh, and thanks for reading!

It was good. Showing how Sam still depends on Dean to have the answers, even when Sam should know that some things just can't be answered. Nice

Author's Response: Glad you liked it!  Thanks for taking the time to leave me a review!

Great, I'll tell you tags are often my fav. read - Something to be said for short and to the point - I loved Dean's point of view concerning John.  Nicely done - thanks

Author's Response: I agree, sometimes short is better than verbose!!  (Although I like longer fics too!)  Thanks for the review!

As always, a wonderful read.

This was so great, Irismay!

These lines really struck me:

And then I’d look at Dad, cleaning guns, reading dusty old books, bruised and battered inside and out and I wondered why Mom being an angel in Heaven had sent Dad to Hell.

****

No more kisses goodnight and angels watching over us.

Just monsters in the closet and demons under the bed.

And you.

You, Sammy.

The only thing the world let me keep.

****

And the end was just perfect. Thanks for this. :)

Author's Response:

So long as it didn't give anyone toothache - I did wonder whether it was a bit sacchriney in places...!!

Glad you enjoyed it!

So many tags and missing scenes, and not all of them hopeful - some of them are downright black. But this one - it was sad, and touching, and I loved the hint of a promise at the end, that no matter what, Dean would always be there. That hangs on to hope, and hope is so important.

Thank you for this - it was great.

Jules

Author's Response: Yeah, I did think twice about actually writing this, seeing as there have been sooo many tags and missing scenes for AHBL...  But it was stuck in my head and had to come out I'm afraid!  I'm glad it was worth the effort though!

Reviewer: Gumnut (Signed) · Date: 22/05/07 07:25 AM · On: Twenty Questions

There is some serious ouch there.

Lovely snapshot, though.  I had noticed that Sammy is ALWAYS asking Dean questions.  I feel sorry for the older brother, yet can understand the younger one.  It is an excellent example of characterisation by the writers.

In this fic, you run over some very painful moments, but you can see the love between the lines.  Dean's devotion.  Sam's devotion.  Dean has walked a tightrope all his life between his father and his brother.  It has made him what he is today.  It has it's good sides and it's bad sides, but ultimately it will likely send him off the side of a cliff...well, having seen the season finale, I think it may already have.

Anyway, I'm babbling.  I was so excited to see a new Irismay fic and I'm so hoping you're going to have some more in the new virtual season. (already read the sequel to 'Graven Images' , need to read it again :D)  I really look forward to your fics and haven't sent you a quarter of the feedback I owe you.  ::totally fangirls 'Let Go' and 'graven Images' having read them many, many times over...though particularly 'Let go' cos it is a favourite::  Apologies for my neglect.  I, umm, owe all the virtual season peoples my adoration.

Thank you so much for writing and sharing.  I know I can't go wrong with an Irismay fic :D

Author's Response:

Aw, I'm soooo blushing!

Glad you enjoyed this anyway!  I'm not entirely sure where it came from or whether it's actually 'about' much of anything, but there you go!

In theory, I've got four co-writes coming up in this season's VS - including the mid-season two-parter with Kitts.  If I ever get my brain into gear!
