that was nicely observed. There's a subtle anger...maybe sadness about it and the interplay of the characters is complex and meaningful.

And that was supposed to read, "on the periphery of this story" not shadow.  lol.  A shadow looming on the periphery of a shadow...

Lord save me.

That was so bittersweet.  I love Sam's frustrated yearning for normal with his appreciation for his brother's encouragement and enthusiasm.  It couldn't have been an easy life, especially for a kid like Sam.  (Dean at least had the motivation of seeing his mom on the ceiling to get him on board with the whole hunting gig!)

And John... Guh, John!  Both boys shine under the slightest praise, and they so rarely get it.  I love how he's like this looming shadow on the periphery of this shadow, the reason they do what they do, and live the way they live (because of Dad's say-so), and yet he's absent until the very end.

Very effective.  Great little snippet.

Thanks for the one shot. I really enjoyed it. Sam will get his wish in the future. Too bad he doesn't appreciate Dean the way he should. I'm glad he didn't tell Dean how he really felt because that would have crushed Dean. Looking forward to more of your stories.
