We saw Dean stripped bare of every defence when Sam fell that night in Cold Oak - the worried, frantic brother/parent, quickly shattering as his brother died in his arms, shutting down, then taking a last, desperate chance to get back the brother whom he loved more than life itself. There was not one without the other. Not back then. Thanks so much for the walk down memory lane. Jules
Author's Response: I think Supernatural appeals to so many because of that, the unending love that the brothers had for each other. Even when the world was going to hell (literally!) they would stand side by side and face it. And Dean is the epitome of love and selflessness on the show. He had one job and he had to do it and it was because of love he never once threw in the towel. He's a hero in my opinoun. Thanks for the review!

Such a sad chapter, but it was such a sad time. I'm sure Dean would have been haunted by the vague memories of his mother during the aftermath of Jess' death, and would have found himself wondering just that - would Sam have been better off if Dean hadn't come? Would Jess have lived? We all know now that the answer to that is a resounding no, but at the time, I'm sure Dean would have been full of doubts, worry and regret. Such a touching scene at the end with Sammy crying his heart out in Dean's lap, and Dean not saying a word, just holding him. *sniffle* Jules
Author's Response: That's what families are for. To help you through the hurt and Dean and Sam are very dependednt on each other since there is no one else. I love that they are there for each other. it makes my day. Thanks for the review. I'M ECSTATIC YOU LIKED IT!

Loved Sam's unwavering faith that his big brother would come to his rescue, no matter what. And loved Dean going up against his father to defend and protect his little brother. And haven't we seen that in canon? Two of my favourite scenes are in season 1 - Dead Man's Blood when Dean gets between Sam and John when they almost come to blows, wordlessly stating that he was on Sam's side by facing John. And stepping in front of Sam again in Salvation, when John started going on about Sam's visions and the fact that neither of the boys had contacted him. I could just hear that "touch him and I'll kill you" note in Dean's voice when he told his father he'd knock him on his arse. I felt sad for John in that moment when he realised he'd trained Dean to do without him, but it was too late - he'd made Dean into a soldier with one mission: protect Sam. And that's just what he's done. Jules
Author's Response: That scene in Salvation is one of my favourites too. It showed me that Dean wasn't just a good little soldier, he could tell his dad when he was wrong. And I so could see Dean getting angry enough to knock out John because of Sam. And John, Ahhhh John. I do love daddy winchester but he did a lot to the boys that is hard to forgive. But there is no denying he did love them.

Really felt Dean's abject fear for his baby brother, and that overwhelming mantra - "He's too young" repeating in Dean's mind was so sad. They both were too young, but what choice did they have? Evil dogged their steps, especially Sam's. But how heartbreaking that they were never given a chance at a normal life - well, in Dean's case it was ripped from him. Cute but sad, the way Sam clung to his big brother when they got into the car.....awww...*sniffle*.... Jules
Author's Response: The boys have this way of depending on each other whenever things get really tough. And i wanted to show that. I am glad that it jerked your tearducts because their love for each other has caused me to swipe the napkins more than once lol! Thanks for the review.

Awwww - loved that it was Dean encouraging Sammy's first steps, and I have no doubt that it was instinctively towards Dean that Sam went. That was a lovely moment in the soon-to-be hectic and dangerous lives of two sweet little boys. Jules
Author's Response: I really wanted to capture memorable moments here, especially for Dean. Dean was the person who has been there for Sam acting like John would've acted had Mary not died, I think. So it seemed right that he be there in the milestones in Sam's life.

i hadn't thought about how difficult Sam's first hunt would be on Dean. I love that you took the opportunity to write it! Fabulous ending! Tonight had been his first time and Dean preayed the next time would not be his last. Time to shatter the innocence that was his brother. That was strong! I can see how Dean would see this as an end for Sam, while others saw it as a transitional period. He would never be old enough for his life to become what theirs was; cold, empty and alone. Just one more example of Dean wanting more for his brother than himself. And he waited with baited breath for that accident. Yeah, I would, too!
Author's Response: Dean was ever Sam's protector so when I thought of doing this, I couldn't fit any other Dean than the protector in this story. And because he was Dean and had to grow up so fast he would have thought of Sam and what this meant for him more than himself. Thanks again for reviewing. Made my day!

A very good story. I like that you've taken a normal milestone in a child's life and built around it. and that meant that Sammy was going away too. Awww, break my heart! dad was smiling again, swinging them both in his arms once they had awoken. I like that the John in your story is a loving, nurturing father. It's how I imagine him after Mary's death. I think he became hard over time. But no one could be untouched by the wonder and innocence of their little children.
Author's Response: I think that after a while all John saw was evil and the bad things that could happen to his sons, so to make sure they never were caught off guard he made them soldiers. But with Mary as we saw in the flashbacks he was a loving and devoted dad. He's a mass of conflicts. But you gotta love Papa Winchester! Thanks for the review.

I loved it, so so sweet :)
Author's Response: Thanks so much! I think Dean is a lot like my older brothers and though no one explained it to me, i got that even the overbearing things they did were in my best interest. (And there were many! lol!) So i'm trying to explore his reasoning a bit and give the bro dynamic we all love! Thanks for the review!
