Guh, bittersweet ending there, huh?  Left a sour taste in my mouth, like Dean making do with scraps is somehow the bright side.

God, I feel so bad for him during the Stanford years.

Great job with this.  Lots of angsty, hurty Dean, just the way I like it.  :)

Author's Response:

Thanks so much for all your wonderful reviews.  You can probably tell I also like angsty, hurty Dean!

Awwww...  You're breaking my heart here!  I know Dean has always sort of projected this image of being Mr. Capable, but it kills me that neither John nor Sam seemed to notice (or care?) how much Dean needed them.

Oh God.  That's so glaringly harsh.  Poor Dean.  His loneliness is like a thick, heavy mantle weighing on his shoulders.

*sniffles and then rushes off to read the rest*

"how the hell is he supposed to keep a game face on when he doesn’t know what the game is any more?"  Another great line!  Your descriptions that summarize how dysfunctional their whole father/son relationship is made me feel that unease, that tension.  Your story really conveyed how messed up Dean's psyche was and how low his self-esteem was back then.  Great job!

Author's Response:

Dean's whole focus was based on taking care of family, and without that, he was completely off balance and lost.  He eventually pulled himself together, but I just wanted to show how he faltered through those first few jobs.  I'm so glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for writing!

"He’d always been damaged, he realizes; but Sammy’d been the glue that had held him together."  That metaphor is so perfect.  I love it.  It describes what a mess Dean is alone.....and how solid the boys are when they're together.  Great chapter.

I'm hooked!

I was in the mood for a little snippet of sad and lonely angst and you provided just the thing *sniff*.  I am glad you gave us the tiniest sliver of hope at the end though...I needed that too.

Very nicely done, Nach!

Author's Response:

Poor Dean, always being abandoned...but he always works his way through.  I'm so glad you enjoyed this!

I read this and couldn't avoid that lump in the throat.  Saved it to favourites then coudn't get it out of mind, so read it again and again. You nailed Dean.  He really has been badly damaged by the undeserved losses in his life.  The fact that he continues to function as well as he does is testament to his remarkable spirit. Thank you for your story.  Awesome stuff.

Author's Response: Thank you so much!  Dean is a survivor, no matter what...

Great job! If Sam couldn't be there for Dean, I'm glad John was.

Author's Response: Thanks so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Now that's just sad... not uplifting at all.. sad that this is what Dean had to accept, that this is his life.

Great story.. thank you so much.

Author's Response:

This is probably the saddest thing I've ever written...but it's also really Dean.  Whenever he hits rock bottom, sooner or later (it's been later, this season!)  he sticks out his chin and say, "OK. I can do this."  That may not seem uplifting, but I think it's true courage.

Thanks for your comments!

Pfew, that was hard to read, so much sadness! But great story again, you've really got the SPN characters down to a T!

Author's Response:

Dean has had a lot to deal with in his life, but I think the important thing is how he always manages not only to survive but adapt and find joy...(eventually, and sometimes in strange places <g>).

Thanks so much for your comments!

I'm still feeling badly for Dean because even though his Dad came to visit with him at the hospital, he was still left there all alone, to get himself home and still feeling that  he isn't up to his father's standards. Is this the end? I really loved the story.

Author's Response: Thanks so much for all your reviews!  You certainly know what it takes to encourage writers to keep going!

How terribly sad to see how Dean got to where he was in the prologue. He's definitely feeling quite alone and abandoned here (and he has been by those that are suppose to love him).  No wonder Dean is feeling the way he does. Looking forward to reading the next chapter!

Poor Dean! He is really in a deep dark place here. I could well imagine this is how he felt when Sam and his Dad left him. I hope he'll start to get  his spunk back. Really enjoyed reading this first part.

That was great. Gotta love depressed Dean ( gee I sound so mean) but glad he got through it at the end. Thanks for writing

Author's Response: Thanks so much!  I'd guess enjoying depressed Dean isn't nearly as mean as writing him (*sigh*)  I do torment the poor boy...
