Thank you for giving in to the bunnies!  This was just amazing--it's like a mini-epoch.

I've read this a couple of times now, and still don't think that I can leave you a review that would do this justice. So...here's my pitiful attempt to put thoughts into words, because I can't in all good conscience back out again without letting you know I've been in here.

The imagery - the graphic descriptions of what Dean's experiencing in the Fae's reality - takes one right there into that final landscape with him, doggedly plodding through the endless heat and sand with him every step of the way, feeling that heavy weight on his shoulders and panicking right along with him that there won't be an end, that the gradually slowing heart will stop before he finds that door.

I loved his rallying, even though it was just for a few steps, and felt the crushing despair when he couldn't keep up the pace, that horrible slide back into endless torture and fear, and overwhelming exhaustion. Yet even in the midst of all that, his mental quip about the hip replacement made me smile, even though at the next second I was chewing my fingernails over the failing of his body.

And then to rejoice - after a moment of wondering whether this was yet another Fae landscape - with Dean when she confirmed that he'd made it through....and finding out that Sam was aware of the test - that was a bit of a shock. I wonder how much Sam was aware of while he was being carried, feeling his own physical body begin to shut down, and knowing Dean was struggling.

This was a great read, so well-painted. One could almost feel the heat and the sand, followed by that cleansing rain.

Thanks, Carolyn - this was awesome.

Author's Response:

That's all the review I could ever hope for! It's so great to see the bits you've picked out - they were some of the moments I really loved writing in this one, and hearing about your reaction to them is incredibly gratifying.

I spent a good while wondering about that moment of hope - it felt so right to give Dean that, and then take it away again but I wondered if it would maybe be too tortuous for the reader - so I'm doubly glad you liked that bit!

Thank you - HUGELY!

Brilliant!  I can't believe how incredible your descriptions were, not just of the terrain but of Dean's thoughts, fears and pains.  When he finally believed that he was going to win only to stumble and lose that first positive feeling I nearly cried.  It was so heart-breaking.  You set up the problem very nicely.  We know enough of what transpired to know the hate and revenge behind it without being bogged down with the details.  Perfectly written! "the place where shadows walk with faces he knew once upon a time and all of them watch him with accusation in their hollow eyes, failure on their blue lips-"  What an intense and eerie passage.  It made my mind wander to all that the Winchesters must have seen, all the people they hadn't been able to save and the guilt they carried for each lost soul.   "He carries home with him on his shoulders... homeless until he finds the way out that she's left for him."  Wow!  Both those statements hit me very hard.  The contrast between Sam being his home and still being homeless was very powerful!

Author's Response:

Aw, thanks! It was a tricky balancing act, this one - I had such a clear idea in my head of what had happened with the fae, it was difficult to know how well it came across without belabouring the point too much, so I'm glad it worked!

I LOVE THIS STORY!!! It speaks to everything that is Dean. His endurance, his strength, his love for Sam and his determination to do anything it takes to save him. This ia what i missed on Suoernatural the entire season with Sam and Dean(until 100th episode). The push and drive that makes the Winchesters, that says no matter the hurt to themselves they will succeed because someone else is depending on them. Thanks for this!

Author's Response:

Thank you so much! I really missed this side of the boys this season too, although I think the way it's gone so far has been little short of awesome - they've changed so much (*sigh*) that they couldn't really behave that way again - until placed in the most extreme of situations, even by Winchester standards!

This. Was. Awesome!  Taking the deals of the fae, and mixing in a bit of Orpheus and Eurydice, and the Six Swans and making it its own story is just fabulous!  Dean is the perfect hero for this.  Stubborn, and determined and willing in every way to do whatever it takes to get his brother back.  Yayy!!!

Dean goes to extremes, carries on, carries the weight... love it! He'd go to the end of the world for Sam. Man, how I need this classic Dean!

Love the angst and hurt in this one...

Great oneshot hunny!
