Hey Great story! Rereading this has truly been a pleasure. I hated Sam's demon-blood addiction but it really showed how only human the boys were and how they fought, 'Team Free-will'.

And I agree with you, Dean isn't empty, there is no way he could be! So take that Famine!

Author's Response: Oh, hey!  Thanks for reviewing again.  :)  Glad you liked it the second time around.

I really enjoyed this.   It had angish for both Sam and Dean.

Author's Response: Thanks so much for taking time to read and review!  I really appreciate it and I'm so glad you enjoyed it! :)

Absolutely awesome tag Sonya.  You got the boys perfectly in this, true to character and totally believable.  Wish Kripke had actually included this in the episode.

You were totally inside Sam's head that he was scared Dean would be disappointed in him but needed his big brother anyway.  And you could really feel him going through withdrawal.  Not surprised he broke down when he realised Dean had had to clean him up but loved how Dean made Sam look him in the eye as he reassured him he didn't let him down.

Perfect that you had Sam tell Dean that famine was wrong, that Dean wasn't dead inside and Sam knew just where his heart was and that his question "I'm not empty?" turned to confirmation "I'm not empty." when he heard Sam's words "No Dean" "Far from it."

Couldn't fault this, wonderful.

Congratulations on your one year anniversary of posting and what a great fic you celebrated the occasion with.

Sarah

Author's Response:

Aw, thanks so much Sarah!  Whenever somebody says they wish something I've written was in the show it just makes my day.  I take that as a huge compliment!

I don't know how the show is going to handle the question of Dean's soul but there is no way that man is dead inside.  Someone who was dead would not feel so much pain and could not love the way he does.

Thanks again for the lovely review!

Lovely...really well done...please please please let them do something like this on the show..I know they wont but it would be fantastic if they did.  great job...

Author's Response: Thank you very much!  Yeah, I doubt we'll see this on the show but that's the great thing about fanfics.  We can just write what we'd love to see!  Thanks again for the fantastic review!

That was fantastic, Sonya!  Made me tear up, girl!!  I particularly enjoyed that the story was from Sam's POV, and yes, that's coming from a Dean girl!  Good job!  And Happy Anniversary!

Author's Response: Thanks so much, Terri!  I wanted to do it from Sam's POV because I knew so many had already been done from Dean's, plus you know I have this huge soft spot for Sammy.

Absolutely love that song! As for the story, I have to say the say the same. It was heartbreakingly beautiful. So much suffering, on both sides, only Dean's is more hidden, at least until the end. But Sam knows it and even half out of his mind he cares enough about his brother to send Castiel after him. And Dean is there for him, shows his love by holding him, cleaning him and in the end letting him know he doesn't blame him. And Sammy can take a load of Dean by telling him he knows his heart, knows he isn't dead. Famine looked into his liver, ha, how stupid, wouldn't find a lot there! Wonderful writing. Hugs, Vonnie

Author's Response:

Thanks so much Vonnie!  It really did bug me when Famine was "looking" into Dean.  I thought "What are you planning on finding there?"  So it worked out well for my story. :)

I appreciate all your kind words and support.  Hugs!

Damn woman! You made me cry again!

No need for stage fright, this one turn out beautiful. Loved it especially the end when Sam told Dean he was not empty and Dean believing it, perfect, just perfect!

Dany

Author's Response:

I'm sorry I made you cry, Dany.  Okay, really, I'm not.  :) If I provoke emotions from the reader then I feel like I've done something right!  I think I've said that before so forgive me for being a broken record.  As much as I love writing, I stink at giving reviews and replying to them.  I never know what to say besides thank you, thank you, thank you!  So, thank you! :)

I really enjoyed Sam's POV here in this story. The self-loathing, disappointment and range of emotions exploreD were great. I love that he thought not of himself but Dean and still you kept truE to the brothers despite everything they were going through. Dean's support of Sam no matter what. Their love for each other. loved it!

I really love these lines,

"Hell, Cas, downed half a cow before it was over."

Castiel shifted in his position by the door but remained silent.

"You said no when it counted, Sammy. You've said no every time it's counted and that's what we'll keep on doing because….well…. because it's all we can do."

I think these lines show the real Sam and Dean.

Author's Response: Thank you so much for such an awesome review!  I really try hard to stay true to the boys and their love and support of each other.  I'm so happy you enjoyed the story!

Author's Response: Thank you so much!  I'm trying to imagine how this story would read to someone who hasn't seen any of season five. :)  I'm glad you enjoyed it and hope you get to see season five soon!

Well, that certainly made me cry. Sam's despair at letting Dean down and Dean's hopefullness that Sam is right that he isn't dead inside, that Famine just couldn't read Dean. He didn't know where to look. I thought Famine was wrong, too. For someone who is suppose to be "dead inside", Dean sure shows a lot of emotion and pain. Famine just couldn't understand what Dean truly wants.  Thanks for the beautiful short story.

Author's Response:

I totally agree with you!  If Dean was dead inside, he wouldn't feel so much pain or have the love he still has for his brother.  He just wouldn't care and Dean is not a person who doesn't care.  If anything, he cares too much.

Thanks so much for the awesome review!  I'm so glad you liked it!

I think you were right not to read the other fics about this episode, it allows you the freedom to do something of your own - add your unique flavour.  I've listened to that song while reading (hadn't come across it before) and it suits your story perfectly!

I'm sure Sam will have misread Dean, just as Dean certainly misread himself - Dean will have recognised Sam's strength in saying no to Famine even while being terrified of the power in him that allowed him to tear the Horseman apart.  And of course, be terrified of the pain he knew was coming as Sam had to go through the detox all over again...

Author's Response:

Thanks AMB. I certainly wanted to be reading tags to this episode! I have to go back and try to play catch-up now!

Isn't that song utterly depressing even though it's beautiful?  They play it on a commercial for animal abuse over here and it's so freaking sad!

Well, that left me with a teary smile like Dean's... sweet! :)

Ah, thought I recognised the reference - that's from City of Angels, isn't it? No wonder Dean reacted. That was one sad movie....

Well, hun, I can fully understand your attack of nerves, because I had it last week.  But you had nothing to worry about - the story turned out beautifully. Sam's shame and despair at having failed to fight his addiction, even though he didn't have a chance once Famine started working on him, came through so clearly, I had tears of my own when he broke down.

And I could very easily imagine Dean cleaning up his detoxed, exhausted brother once it was all over, knowing that Sam's current state was agitating and shaming him.

I'm also really glad that Sam affirmed for Dean that Famine had read him wrong - that he wasn't dead inside, or soulless. And who better than Sam to know Dean's heart and make that declaration? He's been the number one recipient of the outflowing of that particular organ all his life.

Lovely story, hun, and a great read to start off my day. Thank you.

Jules

Author's Response:

I didn't even think about the City of Angels movie.  I just think that song is so sad.  I heard it played at a funeral recently and that's what the song means to me, that someone is being carried away from this world in the arms of an angel and Dean would not want to compare Sam being carried by Castiel to that song because it would mean Sam is dead (or in this case, dying).

Dean's heart is what I was trying to show through this whole story.  When I had the line "I Know Your Heart", I knew where I was going with the story.  Even thought it was from Sam's POV, it was showing that Dean isn't empty inside.  Nobody with that much love and emotion is empty inside.  I don't care what some old dried up horseman says.

Thanks for the awesome review Jules.  I'm really glad you liked it! :)
