Excellent story!  Sam's comment to Dean bothered me also.  As if Dean at age 4 greived any less for a missing mother than Sam in his twenties for a lost girlfriend/ lover. Dean covers his feelings so well that I think sometimes Sam doesn't realize how deeply he really does feel.

Good job.  I like your description of Dean's memories of that time, especially remembering the looks of pity as people looked at the surviving threesome.  Very sad, but rings true.

Good story.  Dean was probably more traumatized over his mother's death than Sam was over Jessica because he was four and couldn't begin to understand what was going on.

I love them both but Sam does sometimes say insensitive things. In his defense, I think John and Dean made him somewhat selfish by trying so hard to protect him.  You can protect someone too much.

This really rings true.  Dean always the protector, and wiser than he ever gives himself credit for - and Sam still too young to understand other people's pain though he thinks he does.  How they both grow from here!
