Maybe someone clobbered John over the head and knocked some sense into him.  While he was down, he lost his key and had to knock to be let in.  Hmmm?

Dean's life seems even more pitiful than I'd imagined.  Poor kid.

Dean's stomach seemed to spit his heart into his throat and he tasted it like acid.  Cool description!  I've felt that a few times myself.

Your writing is very good but I have to say, I want to kill that son of a bitch, John Winchester!  How could he even think of leaving Dean behind in the motel?!  I wish Child Services had taken Dean away.  Sam, too.  He wasn't a total bastard.  What?!  In what Fairytale Land does he live?  I think the jury's out getting the rope now.

This chapter had my emotions all over the place.  I was angry at John.  I was happy that Dean was able to go to school and make friends and feel he belonged somewhere.  I was sad that he was so far behind the other kids and felt shame and fear for not knowing.  And I was touched by his concern for Bobby.

...because home is who's in it, really, not the building.  Wonderful!  I'm glad Dean has learned that. It will serve him well for the life he will lead.

If you noticed in the last review I put 'very well writted.'  Too bad we can't say the same about the review.  :^)

Geez! John's a real ass!  So glad Bobby's came along.  Too bad it didn't last longer.

I guess I hadn't really thought of Dean not remembering what it was like to live in a house or know what is was to go to school.  That really made me rethink Dean's childhood.  This is a version I hadn't contemplated before.

Dean and Sam running through the house spelling words was cute and funny.

Ah!  So now we know why Bobby was going to shoot John on sight.

Very well writted.  You convey emotions eloquently and the writing mannerisms of the characters speech patterns is a nice touch.

Such a sorrowful chapter, so full of fear and sadness.  I'm certain that's the childhood Dean must have had and the vivd portrayal of that bleak uncertain life is heart-breaking.  It was expecially hard to know of Dean's doubt that his father wanted to return to his children.  Very realistic which is why it's so depressing.

"Here."  Sam said.  "He doesn't care 'bout a cookie."  That was so sweet!  The scene where Dean explains to Sam not to take things from stores was full of childhood innocence and was very touching but when Sam pulled out the extra cookie and gave it to Dean... I melted like a chocolate chip.

The end of this chapter was so incredilby sad.  Poor Dean trying to reassure himself that he means something to his dad and that their dad isn't going to leave them like their mom did.

OMG

This is... I'm not a fan of John's and I do think he was a terrible father to Dean - but this is more than I like to imagine.

It's a good, very well-writen story, even if highly disturbing. I'd love to read more.

Is there something more to John's behavior? Like does he have any particular reason to treat Dean like that? I mean like a situation when parents blame their kids for something stupid that wasn't their fault in any way but it affects their relationship nonetheless. But that would be Sam rather than Dean, considering how Mary had died. So does John have issues or is he just mean bastard?

Ok, you don't need to answer right away, I just would like to read more about John's motives in the story, why there is such a difference in how he treats his boys.

And I have to mention that I absolutely love your Bobby.

And I love the parts about tables and so on. And letters.

It just a piece of great writing.

PS. The title from Metallica *HEARTS*

Author's Response:

I think its a little bit of both. He does have a lot of issues and he's not exactly Father Brady with his children. I think right now John just feels out of his league. He's still groping with the death of the love of his life and the idea that it might have not been completely natural. On the other hand, he's not the superstitious type, so its also kind of a question of his own sanity. And he's trying to keep a brave face for his kids. And i think he's never felt perfectly capable of being a good father. Im not saying he isnt, but he doubts himself.

All that aside, I accept that my John may be slightly OOC. I have a slightly different story in my head of how things went down, so that changes things. It will all be explained in the end. :)

I know I should update more often, and I'll try to keep up from now on. I'll post the next chapter after I finish writing this response. I hope you like it.

Holy Crap! Yes, John, you are a complete bastard! How could he do that to his own 8 year old child?! My heart just broke for Dean here. How in the world does a child get over that kind of abandonment? If Sammy hadn't cried for Dean over and over, I do believe John would have left Dean permanently. He doesn't see Dean as his son at all. Mary is spinning in her grave (or where ever she is!). Please, please update soon!!

Author's Response: Thank you! Yes, he is, isnt he? I've just posted chapter 6, so it should be up soon. It means so much to me to see all these awesome reviews and know that people are reading and enjoying my stories!

How terribly sad. Dean is literally illiterate here. Hasn't his teacher figured that out? I'm feeling really terrible for young Dean here. I can't wait to see what happens next.

I really do not like this John.  He is definitely not doing right with his boys, especially Dean. I cringed at the way John was all worried about Sam and no thought for poor Dean, and here he is 8 years old and hasn't been to school yet! He'll never be able to catch up at this rate. Love your Bobby, he knows what's best for those boys. Looking forward to reading the next chapter.

I love this story. Poor Dean, old enough to know that they are in deep sh%^, and Sammy not really old enough to know how much peril they are in. I can't wait to read t he next chapter (again!!).

Holy Moly! What's happened to John? What in the world is Dean going to do if John doesn't come back?? There is no way he'll be able to feed themselves. Hope you update ASAP!
