It has taken quite a while to read the rest of the chapters, you know with life the universe and everything getting in the way. But I am glad I have finally had the chance to finish it, it kept me as gripped as before, and Dean's and Sam's recovery has been so intense, its been a great read. Jacq x
Author's Response: Hey Jacq. Thanks for the reviews and I know exactly what you mean about life etc. I've got a long list of fics I've been meaning to read and just not had the time for yet. I'm so pleased you enjoyed this story. It's my masterpiece to date and everytime someone tells me they've enjoyed it I glow a little inside. So thank you :)

Review for 1-9 I've been reading the whole thing in one go, but have found I need to go home from work now...(It was a quiet day!). So have only got half way, cannot leave with out saying how much I am enjoying the story, but I am glad I have got to the 'Dean has been rescued' chapters, cause I do not know if I could bear the anxiety otherwise...lol I shall catch up with the rest soon... Rats nibbling his ankles!!!! errgh, I hate rats! lol Jacq

Really enjoyed it! Nice to have protective Sam out there willing to do anything to defend or save Dean.
Author's Response: Thank you - it was impossible to write without Sam there taking charge like we know he can :)

I can't believe I almost missed the end to this! I snooze, I lose. I like how you ended this, although I have to admit that I felt there was another chapter or two before things wrapped up. I suspect a sequel in there somewhere as Dean still takes time to recover. I actually liked that Dean was ready to go before Sam. That he needed things to go back to normal. I always feel that way myself, so it worked for me. Great story, fun to read. Thank you!
Author's Response: Thank you! I had such fun writing this and I could have gone on for another 20 chapters actually. But it was time to move on and whilst I hadn't thought of a sequel there is a companion piece in the works - the tale of Jefferson Watts and what really happened nine years ago. Thank you for reading and reviewing :)

A really wonderful story. Dean is mending but it will take a very long time for him to be his normal self. If he takes one step at a time he'll get there. Thanks for the great read!
Author's Response: Thank you. Dean will have the support of his family and he will get there - in time.

I only started to read this story when it already had 8 chapters and I'm so glad because I really loved it! Dany

Great story! I have loved every chapter. I'm sorry to see it end ... but everything worked just right. Thank you so much
Author's Response: Thank you. I was sorry to see it end too but it was time for the boys (and me) to move on. I could have written another hundred chapters to this story but at some point it had to end and this seemed a good place.

"He needs to be out there being Dean Winchester..." I was impressed by the power in that simple statement. Not only is Dean defined by hunting but by his strong will and independence. Those can't be reclaimed if he stays in Bobby's safety zone. He needs to not only face his fears but attack them. "... he knows he needs to do it in solitude. Because anger is a personal emotion and he doesn’t want to share it." Yet another insightful gaze into the complexities of Dean. Bobby's perspective on not only Dean but Sam's recovery is wonderfully accurate. NO one thinks about the caregiver when someone is recovering from a tragedy. Everyone focuses on the survivor. Bobby is wise enough and loving enough to heal both men. I especially liked "They might even call just for the hell of it sometime. Maybe … or maybe not." that shows precisely how well he knows the boys. The paragraph in the final passage where each man reckons something is both astute and funny. Then at the very end, we find out the positive aspects of this horrible experience and how it's affected each man. This was an absolutely brilliant piece!! You did so much more without dialogue than most people are able to reveal with it. I'll be looking for more of your work and taking a peek at past stories. ;)
Author's Response: It's so easy to forget about the caregiver but often they're just as affected by events as the victim. Sam needed looking after too and I think Bobby would know that. As for the dialogue, I'm an 'all or nothing' kind of girl and once this story decided which way to go I couldn't really stop it LOL! Often what's not said is far more revealing that what is said. Thank you for your kind words - they made my day.

Jenny, great job at this story. i enjoyed it. i only wish you would have went into what they did to Dean. Love the protective Sam and Bobby and hurt Dean is always good.
i look forward to reading another one of your stories. take care Renee
Author's Response: Hi Renee, I wondered how much detail to go into with Dean's ordeal but sometimes it's better to leave things out - let the reader go wild with their imagination. I'm glad you enjoyed it though, thank you for reviewing.

Endings to stories such as this one are always soooooo bittersweet. On one hand- you need the resolution- the ending thats so justly deserved- like the perfect dessert to a hearty, fulfilling meal- the perfect compliment. But on the other hand- its like saying goodbye to that long-time friend- finally passing away after some long-time illness. You know it had to happen- but you just can't let go. I mentioned in the last review that I'd already re-read this story twice- I can now re-read it again- start to finish- savoring it in its entirety- in its totality. But aside from that- and in retrospect- I can sit here now and say that this story had nothing to do with Deanwhumpage (although thats always a welcome by-product lol) and it had nothing to do with brotherly angst ( although thats always nice too) - but in my opinion- you managed to sum it up in a couple of sentences here in the epilogue ( whether it was your intent or not) and here it is... it’s been an interesting month. It’s a month none of them are sorry to put behind them, a month none of them will ever forget. They’ve all learned things about themselves and each other --- and from Bobby - Dean but he takes solace in knowing Sam is there and totally capable of looking out for his brother. It’s a strange reversal of roles for them, he thinks, but Sam had a good teacher for this new role of his. And it won’t be forever. Dean’s stronger every day and soon he’ll be snarking and causing trouble and breaking hearts all over America again. Bobby never thought he’d be looking forward to the day he receives a call to bail the Winchesters out of another jam but then life has a habit of throwing curved balls when they’re least expected. This was a beautiful journey that was more about delving into the intricacies of these wonderful characters and I- for one- truly enjoyed it. Thank you for the trip!
Author's Response: Thank you so much. I love this story. For something that started life as a one shot it evolved into something that I'm really, really proud of. I finished it weeks ago but posting it here has kept it alive for me. Now it's all over I miss it even more! Still, I have other things to keep me occupied now LOL!

Wow- I'm not sure I could even picture that last scene in my head until I thought back to the end scene in Heaven and Hell. Then I saw broken Dean- going on about everything that happened to him down in the pit and I saw damaged Dean here- finally being able to tell his brother about all the horrors he suffered while in that basement. I could hear the words, incomplete sentences, nothing coherant, just adjectives that spoke of mental and physical anguish that made Sam cringe. And then- as I came back to this chapter, I'm awestruck by the fact this this is Day 12... day 12.... 6 days since Dean has been rescued from that hell... nearly a week and I'm shaking my head that it seems like such a long time and yet it really isnt. I mean considering everything he went through- a week is nothing. But then I think- wow - 6 days Dean's managed to bottle this all up inside and now he's cracking- now he's gonna crumble apart and can he be put back together- will it be like trying to stuff the egg back into the shell? I've reread this entire story twice now and I'm not entirely sure that any of it has had a greater impact that these past two chapters- both are so telling into the characters of Sam and Dean. The last into just exactly how far Sam would go into saving his brother ( we're acutely aware of how far Dean would go to save Sam) and this one- into just how hard Dean tries to keep himself to solidly together, how well he has constructed those "I'm fine" walls and just how fragile they really are. Well done, Jenny. You've given us a realistic glimpse beyond the surface and humanized these guys without trivializing them or smooping them to the point of making me roll my eyes.
Author's Response: I'm just so thrilled you're enjoying this so much. I've put such a lot into this story and every time I switch view points I had to take a little break to get my head in the right place. Thank you :)

I likethat you mentioned how well Bobby knows every noise his house makes. It's those little touches that add realism to your work. Great job! Dean learning that he's a survivor is awesome. he probably always believed he was but now he's proven it to himself. He survived the most horrible experience of his adult life and can take pride in that accomplishment.
Author's Response: I think every homeowner knows their house. My upstairs floors creak in the heat and it sounds just like footsteps! Freaked me out when we first moved in but now it just freaks out guests!

At last, Dean is finally talking, hope it helps in healing him. And he's definately getting better, be back to the old dean in no time. I hope. Great chapter, Please keep them coming
Author's Response: Yep, Dean needs to talk this through, no matter what he thinks of 'chick flick' moments!

This is the first time I feel like things are going to be better for Dean. Whew. I think you handled the situation very delicately. I liked it very much.
Author's Response: Thank you - that's the approach I was going for.

It's good that Dean has opened up to Sam, and with Sam's tslk to Bobby maybe both of them can start to feel better.
Author's Response: Well, I hope they can. They both needed someone and in their current situation I think they both found the right someone ^_^

Wow! Dialogue! The communication of unspoken thoughts and feelings between the two men was beautiful and powerful! Another fantastic chapter!
Author's Response: Thank you. I wondered if the lack of Dean in this chapter would be an issue but Sam really needed this and Dean's in no position to help.

Zombie...interesting! At last we know what the boys were dealing with, if not the whole story yet. I feel bad for Sam- he was always the most careful about making sure it was the monsters they were killing, not humans. I'm glad that Bobby is so willing to listen and help him through it.
Author's Response: Yeah, Sam has issues with this but, at the end of the day, he did it for Dean and we know how that relationship goes!

Awww, i know Bobby would understand, Sam did what he had to,they hurt Dean, maybe Sam can start to heal now.
Author's Response: Bobby's awesome. If anyone is going to be able help Sam throught this - it's him.

ahhhh- thats just soooo satisfying... I think I feel as relieved as Sam and Bobby do in the retelling of the deaths... I think I needed to know as much as Bobby did... and I think I didnt feel a tidbit of remorse... like Sam - it just needed doing - a less than fitting end for four men that were less than human. and somhow Watts- cowering and pathetic- deserved nothing but the quick and dishonerable death that he got. There's a part of me that beams with pride at the skillfulness that Sam employed in how he so lethaly enterred and took out all those men- not saying that its surprising- we all know he can do it when the motivation is right. And now it looks as though even he can move on with the healing ( someting he needs every bit as much as his brother does). Awesomeness!
Author's Response: Thank you, Tree. I needed Sam to have some sort of outlet for himself. He's so focussed on Dean at the moment and bottling things up is never good. He needed this release and who else could he trust so implicitly than Bobby?

"Sam’s hand at his back the whole time, a strong, comforting presence, not rushing him but not letting him fall back either. In the back of his mind Dean wonders how Sam knows exactly what he needs and when." This passage truly showcases the love and intuition the Winchesters have for one another. A beautiful and encouraging spirit in this chapter!
Author's Response: Whatever happens in Season 5, in my world that brotherly bond will never, ever be broken. It might bend a little from time to time, but in the end, it's the two of them together.

Very unexpected! Just when you make us think that Dean is getting himself together something throws him back into the nightmare. I love this story!!
Author's Response: Ha! You didn't think I was going to fix him overnight did you? I like to take my time healing my boys - it's more fun that way :)
