“Sam?” He turned. Dean was standing there, tears glistening in his eyes and one lone one trailing his face. He scrubbed at it viciously with the back of his hand. “I thought….” Sam stepped forward and then the moment became awkward as Dean drew back slightly, stood biting his bottom lip. His whole face trembled with emotion. Then he stepped forward and hugged his brother so tightly that Sam thought he was going to burst, that he’d be like a giant teddy bear with stuffing leaking out if Dean didn’t let up. Still, he hugged his brother back just as fiercely. Mary - I've followed this story all along- and I'm not sure any of it has stolen my breath away as much as these lines.... it was like watching Lazerus Rising or AHBL all bound together... yet knowing that the brothers werent saying goodbye forever... not nearly so tragic.. yet just as painful... My heart was still breaking for Dean- knowing that he was letting go - know how much he didnt want to. You built up to this scene so well and added in those pieces we knew were there- hinted to in canon. Well done! -Tree

snif, snif, blubber, blubber. You had me crying here at the end. Poor Dean, his world is crashing down again. Of course John was an ass. He deliberately sent Dean into town so he wouldn't be there when Sam left. I hate to say it though, John is right. Sam won't be able to escape the hunting life, he'll only get a reprieve for a few years. Dean finally got up the nerve to say goodbye to Sam face to face, had me worried there for a minute that he wouldn't be able to do it. I can't wait to read the last 2 chapters.

What a great birthday's present got from DEan. The impala died on them and it's Sam fault, lol. To be stuck in the middle on nowhere in a broken car can only happen to Dean and Sam but it's going to be the best moment of Sam's birthday. Awesome update Mary, can't wait what's next.

Mary, great chapter. Love when Dean blames Sam when something happens to the Impala. Poor Sam he knows nothing about cars. Dean making this birthday the best knowing full well that Sam is leaving. Heartbreaking. again great chapter Renee

GREAT birthday! We were in Vegas on a vacation many years ago when it was trying to be a good family place. We ate at the Bellagio, but never got to really watch the fountains more than a quick -oo, nice fountains. I regret that. I liked reading about the birthday. I did NOT like reading about the broken car! That's BAD! Very BAD! I might be nice and good, but I'm beginning to suspect that you aren't! :) Truth is, it made a very nice ending to the chapter- them sleeping in the car instead of the posh hotel. It was good.

Would I do that? Seriously, I just wanted them to end up doing something that was more normal at the end and getting stuck in the car seemed to fit. Loved the birthday Dean planned for Sam. What a wonderful time they had. Why am I not surprised that John wasn't involved at all. Seems like the Winchester luck was with them at the end though. Looking forward to more!

Dean is such the great brother, too bad Sammy doesn't remember that when he heads off to college. What a great time they had...and I like how at the end the "worse" birthday felt more natural to them than the vegas day. great job

Nice birthday treat for Sam... including the girl... lol. Bittersweet in that its all coming to a close- Stanford waiting just around the bend- but nice that Dean handled it all so well. I loved the domestic moment with Dean and Julie-Anne, almost wish it was like that for him all the time. Curious whats up with the Impala- and I cringed when he was yelling at the car... it was almost sacriligeous!! heehee! I'm almost biting my nails as the boys curl up for the night in the Chevy... part of me wondering if this is just a last goodbye- or if something awful is gonna happen??? But then you said this was wrapping up- soooo..... Fabulous ride, Mary... I've loved it the whole way!

Wanted a nice moment before the angst of Sam leaving and Dean is handling well for now. Funny the paper scene is my fav bit of this too! Great minds and all that, lol. I could be evil and make the Impala breakdown something it wasn't but this story could got on forever (it already has!). That was a terrific chapter. That hunt lifted for a while the tension between the trio since they left Agnes and Julie-Anne. Sam's birthday is going to be an emotional day, can't wait to know what Dean has in story for his baby brother. Happy New Year Mary.

At first I thought it was a supernatural cat, then I thought, no it's just a regular cat. Turns out it was something supernatural after all. Good thing Dean was able to take care of it. I found it rather sad at the end, how Dean was feeling about perhaps sharing a last birthday with Sammy. I get the impression he believes if Sam leaves for college, he may never see him again. Looking forward to more.

Wow!Lot of tension, not only between John and Sam but between Sam and Dean too. With Sam leaving, I like how they're acting and reacting with each ofther, so fitting with their personnality. What a cliffhanger, Dean disobeyed to John by going at the house and Sam went after him, oh well. Amazing chapter Mary, I can't wait to read more.

OH no!!! Dean should not have done that!!! He knows better than to go off by himself. I knew Dean's scores would be higher than average. Go Dean! I'm back to being nice and good, but I feel really yucky. Turns out vertigo+sinus pressure= worse vertigo. I don't have time for this because you're right, Christmas is CRAZY busy, and I'm in the middle of it! Either way, survive the Christmas rush, and I will look forward to more chapters!

Great chapter, I thought John was real nasty when he said 'congratulations' to Sam. Why didn't dean just tell Sam his scores, he should have been proud of them, they seem to be bickering a bit too much now as well and now dean has gone an done something silly, looking forward to more, thanks.
