When I began reading this I was sure that there would be the usual evil thing at the end, came as a jolt when I realised it was a deer! Then begins the gradual wall building for Dean and John does what he does best, not seeing...

Its nice to have a story I can read without spoilers as so many have at the moment(UK reader here!)

Look foward to the next part...Jacq

Author's Response: Hey, Jacq, thanks for a lovely review.  I'm really glad my story won't spoil you, I personally hate being spoiled before I see an episode.  Yep, hopefully this will expose how Dean first came to build those walls and explain a little about John, how he loves his son even tho he doesn't always see him.  Yep, those Winchesters...  Take care, B.J.

Hey BJ.

This is a lovely portrayal of the emerging hunter in Dean and his conflict in the role. The start of it felt very atmospheric, rather like the scenes in Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid when the pair of them are being relentlessly persued and they are getting more and more anxious but trying to pretend they are unconcerned.

The death scene is haunting and brings home how difficult a dilemma the hunt is for Dean and I liked your John. He is business like enough to be plausible but human enough to still love.

Nice story  will be tagging ya for the rest!

Author's Response:

Thanks, bev, always good to hear what you think.  I love the comparison to Butch Cassidy and their pursuit.  I did want to plop the reader right into the hunt and then twist the reveal to make them feel how Dean felt.  What a terrible image that must have been for a young boy.

And, oh, how I love John and showing all facets of his intriguing personality.  I love being harsh with him and yet I hope everyone knows how much I love him and know he is doing what he thinks is best.  But you have to admit, some of Dean's issues come from how he was raised, what was expected and how quickly he was forced to grow up.  The boy simply wanted to please his dad and John sometimes didn't recognize the child that was being ignored in the meantime.

Thanks again.  Later, B.J.

This is some stellar writing here -- such emotion and adventure :) - and you've captured young Dean, as well as John, with a fairly masterful touch -- I'm really impressed, and can't wait for more!

Author's Response: What a lovely review!  Thank you!  I love showing all the complexities of both Dean and John.  They have so many conflicting emotions and responses.  And I love looking back at the early years and trying to see how they came to where there are on the show.  Until next time, take care, B.J.

Aww, now that was just heart-breaking!  At first I was like, "Why is Dean being such a sap for a monster that he just shot?"  Then I realized it wasn't a monster he was hunting...

Poor kid!

This was really amazing.  The pacing was great, and the emotions were tightly controlled when they needed to be, and off-the-charts when everything went sideways.  And I loved how you portrayed John -- he was almost like a shadow, this presence who we don't really see so much as sense.

Fantastic job!

Author's Response:

Thanks!  I think it is such a delicate balancing act with both Dean and John.  I've always seen Dean as tender and emotional, but also badass and tough.  This is my attempt to show how he reconciled the two opposite facets of his personality.

And John, I've always loved John, but I'm not oblivious to the harshness he sometimes projected and the mistakes he made.  But I always see the love and concern too.   I love writing John showing  both sides of his personality.

Thanks again, much appreciated, B.J.

Yay, a new story, loving it so far - love Weechesters.  Thanks K.

Author's Response: Thanks!  I also love the Weechesters, any insight I can cull from their early years makes me understand them better.  And there is so much we don't yet know.  Take care, B.J.
