The first thing I noticed being back in the now, was the absence/prescence of John, even out of their lives his influence will always be what moves them along, Dean protecting Sam even to an emotional depth and his fear that Sam would look at him and see 'Dad' and hate him too.  But will he ever trust Sam enough for the wall to tumble completely, time will tell...

You seem to know how to get it so right between them, the banter the distance, the feelings...and the lighter moments...

A good ending for a good story...Jacq x

Author's Response:

Thanks, Jacq!

Dad is always present in their lives, most especially Dean's. And I do think for a child he would relate so closely with his dad and for Sam to always be fighting with him, protesting the life, it had to be hard on Dean.

I swear in DMB, I first wondered how Dean ever got out without an ulcer, being the mediator between the two most important people in his life who constantly seemed at odds.

I hope that trust can be reforged, but it is going to be tough.  I think Dean has always held back a little, fearful that Sam with his fixed notions wouldn't understand.  Of course, now we have Sam claiming that Dean doesn't understand his demon blood and how he feels.

Oh, boys...I do hope they learn to trust and support each other fully again.

Take care, B.J.

Awww BJ - I didnt notice you were posting this story here on UnGen. This is one of my all-time fav WeeChester stories- and considering 'A Hunting..." was one of the first zines I ever read- it was my introduction to you as well. I read that story and then someone told me about Valentine Texas- and well- you've had me hooked ever since.

So glad to revisit this one. And now- you have me curious to pick out what 'tweaking' you might have done - although I doubt it ever needed it to begin with.

Thanks for a great trip down memory lane- What a wonderful discovery on a rainy Saturday afternoon.

Author's Response:

Aw, Tree, what a lovely review.  As a writer, I'm sure you know how it goes, you always look at the earlier stories and see all the things you could have done differently.

One obvious thing is, it shocks me how ignorant I was at punctuation.  I learned a lot from Mysti at the zine on how to punctuate according to the New York Times.  She corrected all my mistakes in my original story so I had to make those corrections and then the other changes were mainly adding descriptions around dialogue.  I used to write a lot of quotey dialogue without any further explanations.

Glad to hear you still enjoyed this story. I do love my younger Winchesters.  Take care, B.J.

A lovely ending to a brilliant story, thanks for writing, i'm looking forward to your new story.

Author's Response: Thank you so much.  I've enjoyed each of your reviews and always appreciate knowing you enjoy my stories.  Take care, B.J.

I enjoyed every minute of this story.  Always a wonder how Sam got through his childhood clueless to the people that populated his life.  I liked this moment for him to have a glimpse into his brother's childhood.

I'm looking forward to the next story.

Author's Response:

Thanks!  I always enjoy hearing your thoughts on the Winchesters and my stories.  I find it fascinating how different characters perceive events differently.  With the age difference, Sam was shielded from a lot of what went on.

Dean was forced to be an adult with John and Sammy was the only one allowed to be a child.  I love protective Dean and he was an awesome big brother, but I also love seeing Sam realize all the sacrifices and then want to step up and take care of Dean too.

Their childhoods are so very intriguing because it shaped their views now and the men they became.  Thanks again, B.J.

BJ

You did a wonderful job writing the brothers, but than we all know how well you can capture Dean voice, yet you got both the brothers in this chapter.

I could just picture Dean's face as the different emotions reflected on it.  Of course he wouldn't want to share anything that personal with Sam right away, but love Sam's determination and his love for his big brother.  Sam needed to know Dean's secret.

Wonderful ending to your story.  One of my favorite chapters.

Please keep sharing your stories with us.  I'll be here to read them. Also, thanks again for the wonderful story dedication in your AN's.

Until next time, take care.

Lori

Author's Response:

Hey, Lori!

Always love hearing from you, you are such a positive, supportive reader and I so appreciate it.  One of these days I will even write that nice story I keep promising you, upbeat and happy.

You know how much I love Dean, and with Jensen portraying him, I don't feel like I can take credit for writing him well.  Jensen makes Dean come alive, and I am simply along for the ride, transcribing what happens in my head.

I'm always really happy to hear I capture Sam's voice.  He is a little harder for me, but so many Sam girls have helped me understand him better and Jared's acting again makes all that love come through plain and clear.

With all the secrets and lies (lol - actually the name of my next story ready to post--) that the boys are involved in right now on the show, it is refreshing to have them sit down and talk, for Sam to be able to pull out one of Dean's secrets and hopefully help him past the pain of his childhood.

Anyway, been super busy with my jury responsibilities, but got your wonderful email and will answer soon.

Later, B.J.

Even John needs 'normal' with that breakfast at Jim's and I felt the tension knott ease a little as he and the boys had a too brief moment that was fun but...then it all came back to instinct, Dean protecting Sam, John taking them away from the danger and justifying to himself what Dean had become...a doubt in his mind he had gone too far...so did he really kill the guy?

looking forward to the final part...Jacq

Author's Response:

Hey, Jacq,

Did he do it?  I'll quote Tessa, I can't spoil the surprise.  I really enjoyed giving John and his boys a sense of normal for that brief moment at Pastor Jim's.  All too soon it is taken away and then we have poor Dean, doing what he's supposed to do, taking care of Sammy.  Thanks for the review, until next time, B.J.

Yikes! Did Dean actually shoot that man? I hope he didn't die if he did. I'd hate to think that Dean killed a man at ten years old. That surely would have ended his innocence all together. I'm looking forward to the last chapter. My heart is still beating fast after this last one!

Author's Response: I did leave it at a bit of a cliffhanger, no denying that.  The big question is how far did Dean go to protect Sammy?  I think I've always wanted the show to delve deeper into that.  Dean certainly lost the last of his innocence at quite a young age... much too young.  Thanks again, B.J.

Reviewer: moira4eku (Signed) · Date: 29/03/09 11:24 AM · On: Chapter 4 - Confessions of the Tormented

Sometimes I just hate John. Even though Dean has built walls around his heart, his tender side comes through anyway. I've really enjoyed reading this story, and I've almost gotten caught up with it!

Author's Response: I'm glad you are enjoying this look back at Dean's childhood.  John can be aggravating, choosing to see what he wants to see as far as Dean is concerned. He sees his strong, obedient son, we see the tender side of the boy.  Thanks for reading, B.J.

Reviewer: darkhunter (Signed) · Date: 29/03/09 09:51 AM · On: Chapter 5 - Moment of Truth

A lovely happy start to this chapter at Pastor Jim's, poor Dean with that awfull man, he was doing exactly what he was taught to do, protecting Sam,still, very scary, looking forward to more.

Author's Response:

I did enjoy giving Dean a touch of good times to counter all the bad he goes through.  It is scary what that boy went through, trained to protect his brother at all costs...even the cost to himself.  *sigh*   Thanks again, B.J.

Reviewer: penmin (Signed) · Date: 20/03/09 08:57 AM · On: Chapter 4 - Confessions of the Tormented

I could see John almost cracked there, he knows what he is doing is wrong but has to continue despite the fact he is tearing away Dean's innocence.  Dean could be like his father but he will always have a closeness with Sam, John lost that closeness the night Mary died.

You do dialogue really well

Now awaiting chapter 5...Jacq

Author's Response:

Thanks, Jacq!

I love that you understand John, he isn't a terrible person, just a man trying his best under terrible circumstances. He always loved his boys, in spite of how he thought he had to raise them.

I love writing dialogue and with these Winchesters, I simply hear them in my head and write down what they are saying.  No, I don't think I'm crazy, just totally into our Winchesters.

Thanks again, take care, B.J.

Awww, another excellent chapter,so very sad.

Author's Response: Thanks again!  Dean's life is so very sad. Later, B.J.

Reviewer: NongPradu (Signed) · Date: 17/03/09 11:03 AM · On: Chapter 4 - Confessions of the Tormented

Awww, another great, heart-breaking chapter.

I would imagine that you're right here -- that part of what John did to Dean as a child was conscious.  There's no way he couldn't know what he was doing to his son, what he was robbing him of.  And with people like Pastor Jim and Bobby around, I highly doubt that no one ever called him on it either.

Poor Dean.  It's funny how his character (up until season 4) has always seemed to have a kind of childlike innocence, in spite of the fact that he never really had a childhood, and hadn't been innocent since he was 4.

But then, that's why we love him.  Unfortunately, Hell seems to have stripped that away from him.  :(

Author's Response:

That is why Dean has captured our affections, he has always been that fascinating mix of little boy and tough man.  I love John and it is hard to say how much he realized at the time and how much he subconsciously refused to see.  I do know he always loved his sons, he just had a tough time raising them with all that evil out to get them.

It is tragic that Hell was finally able to steal the last of Dean's childhood, stripping away most of the joy he could always manage to find.  I can't wait to see him find real pleasure again.  Take care, B.J.

AHHH! John is such an ass! Poor Dean, at least he's got pastor Jim to try and fight for him. great job thanks for writing

Author's Response: John is so stubborn, even when the facts are laid out for him and the truth is Dean is a kid here, he still stays on the course he set for his son.  John only sees what he needs to see, the warrior and protector of Sammy.  I really wish we'd gotten to know Pastor Jim more.  I believe he would have fought for the boys and preserving their innocence.  Thanks for the review, B.J.

This was great - again...one part that got to me was when Jim hugged Dean, and it was such an unfamilar thing to have a genuine adult comforting hug, that it was nice for him but he knew it was going to be a rare moment in his life, his wall broke and rebuilt itself in a fraction of a second,

Looking forward to the next chapter...Jacq

Author's Response:

Thanks, Jacq,

Oh, young Dean does break your heart, doesn't he?  He always tries to convince himself and everyone else he doesn't need anyone, doesn't need that comfort of a hug and yet when offered it he lingers within the embrace.  Sammy was the only one he could always count on being there with a hug... and then eventually even Sam grew up and left him.  Ah, yes, those walls Dean learned so well how to erect to protect himself.

I'm really glad you are enjoying this story.  Take care, B.J.

Poor little Dean, it's so sad that he was never really allowed to be a child, heart breaking.

Author's Response: Yes, Dean losing his childhood is just one of the many tragedies the Winchesters and particularly Dean suffered.  Thanks for the review, B.J.

Reviewer: NongPradu (Signed) · Date: 06/03/09 10:57 AM · On: Chapter 3 - Lost Dreams as a Warrior is Born

Gosh, that last line from Dean is so frighteningly grown up.

This story breaks my heart (as I imagine it's supposed to).

Can't wait for the next update!

Author's Response:

Yes, Dean and all the Winchesters have led truly tragic lives.  I always see Dean now as part child and part man, reliving the childhood he lost as a kid.  Lately, he doesn't get to experience many of those childhood joys, but hopefully he will again soon.

He was quite the responsible grown-up as a child, even John acknowledging that in IMTOD when he said he was sorry for Dean taking care of him... Truer words were never spoken from a father.  Thanks again, B.J.

Reviewer: amethyst (Signed) · Date: 05/03/09 06:07 PM · On: Chapter 3 - Lost Dreams as a Warrior is Born

I absolutely love this story. Your doing a brilliant job of showing how the boy became the man he is. Strong  yet broken,  tough and sensitive all at the same time. Well done can't waiat for more

Author's Response: Thank you.  I certainly love exploring how Dean came to be who he is on the show.  He is that intriguing mix of both tough and sensitive.  He's faced so much adversity in his young life and yet he has this resilience and basic strength of character that allows him to keep moving forward.  Glad you are enjoying my version of his youth.  Take care, B.J.

You're doing a great job drawing Dean up, especially in this chapter -- the bright, sensitive, and quite brave kid portrayed here is just about exactly what Dean must have been like at that age -- and what a wonderful big brother to Sam he must have been! -- I really like this story:)

Author's Response: Dean is such an amazing man on the show, and this is how I've always pictured him as a child, trying so hard to be everything his family needed him to be.  No wonder his own needs and wants were so often neglected.  Thanks for reviewing, take care, B.J.

I've just read the first two chapters of your story, and can easily imagine Dean being this way as a child. The story is quite poignant and bittersweet, so far. Looking forward to the next part of your story.

Author's Response: Thank you for reviewing.  Yes, I've always seen Dean as sensitive and his walls are his defense system.  He had an awful lot put on his shoulders at a very young age and he was just a child, trying his best to please his dad.  It is so sad to think of that child struggling to live up to his dad's expectations.  I hope you enjoy the rest of the story. Take care, B.J.

hey BJ.

Owh that's so well observed. John trying to be Dad and struggling to live up to Dean's example in sammy's eyes.  Sad when you think about it but unsurprising.  I bust my wrist a couple of years ago and waited 11 hours for surgery with no pain meds...does that make me brave and high pain tollerant like Dean or just plain stupid? No don't answer that one!!

Bev xxxx

Author's Response:

Yep, Bev, I'd say you are brave and have high pain tolerance!  Maybe we should make you an honorary Winchester!  My nephew, Logan, should be too.  He was only ten when he broke his same arm twice, a year apart, and never cried.  The first time his mom didn't believe him when he said it was broke, she soon learned.

After Tree's injury and yours, makes me think I should have had Dean having surgery or something for a wrist, but I'll pretend it wasn't as severe as yours.  Dean is so good at pretending everything is all right, I guess I'll follow his lead.

And John is pretty good at pretending too.  Yeah, those Winchesters.  Thanks again, take care, B.J.

Reviewer: NongPradu (Signed) · Date: 26/02/09 09:13 AM · On: Chapter 2 - Bedtime Stories and Real Life

That bit about the mirror was a really nice tough -- especially considering you wrote this long before DALDOM, where Dean actually admits to hating his own reflection.

This story is just so sad, but at the same time tender and sweet and... gah, chalk full of beautiful angst.

Can't wait for the next update!

Author's Response:

Oh, thanks!  I hadn't really considered the mirror aspect as related to DALDOM.  Goes to show how wonderfully they set up who Dean is.  I do love when something I write fits in with the direction of the show.  There are so many twists and turns to Dean's personality, but some things just seem to fit.

I'm really happy readers are feeling the tender and sweet moments along with the angst.  It is nice to get it all into a story, makes it more poignant to think of this small boy dealing with all these issues.  Thanks again, B.J.

Reviewer: darkhunter (Signed) · Date: 26/02/09 05:51 AM · On: Chapter 2 - Bedtime Stories and Real Life

A very powerful chapter, intense and painful but also lots of love.

Author's Response: Thanks, I did really want to show all sides of John.  He loves his boys, he just had a tough road in raising them and didn't always see how damaged his oldest was.  Dean's been living with this pain now his whole life, amazing that he functions as well as he does.  Take care, B.J.

Reviewer: penmin (Signed) · Date: 26/02/09 03:57 AM · On: Chapter 2 - Bedtime Stories and Real Life

Well, that was intense, even if he's not fully hunting evil things yet, even though still young, he still has inner battles to face, and its more than just the physical pain that he keeps to himself, typical Dean adding...just another - brick in the wall!

Good one...Jacq

Author's Response: Thanks, Jacq!  You have to assume Dean's been building that wall for a very long time.  The trauma of losing Mom at four was only the beginning.  Man, that poor kid.  Thanks again, B.J.

A fantastic start to this story,i love to read weechesters, i didn't expect a deer.

Author's Response: Thanks!  Even John would start his son out slow, hunting a deer or something not too tricky.  But maybe that wasn't such a good idea?  Seems whatever John does he seems to harm his sons, even though he does love them.  I love writing Weechesters, I hope you enjoy the story.  Take care, B.J.
