I love the way you write the Winchesters.

This story was utter perfection.

I loved drunk Sam and Dean and Bobby trying to be there for Sam and trying to get him to remember that Dean was back from hell.

This was just too awesome.

Author's Response:

Aww, thanks Laina.

Even though it took a fair bit of research with distances and travel routes, I enjoyed writing Sam's cross-country flight to prove his brother's physical status, and Dean's frantic race to catch him before he took off again.

And I'd not long gotten hold of Hancock on DVD and thoroughly enjoyed it, so I just had to throw in a reference there.

So glad you loved it.

This was really great!  I loved all the internal dialogue!  I think you got in to their heads really well.  This was much more thorough telling of Sam's ordeal after Dean's death.  Bobby's too.  And even more of  Dean's feelings as well!

Author's Response:

Thanks for that, Leslie.

I was a wee bit disappointed that we only saw a bit of Sam's journey while Dean was in hell, actually. Especially since we didn't see any of Sam's reaction to his father's death, and I've always thought Sam's emotions run very deep and very strong.

So I dug around on my own and came up with this to satisfy one of those itches that never seem to go away until you have a darn good scratch.

And I rummaged around in Dean's head while I was there too - lol.

Thanks so much for coming along for the ride - I'm glad you enjoyed it.

ohhhh...wasn't expecting to see Ruby.  I wouldn't have thought Sam would have responded that way to her. THAT would have been awesome to have watched!  I know Dean got her in the end with the knife and Sam helped....but still...poetic justice for her to teach him and then have him turn around and do it to her!

Author's Response:

Yes, I thought so. Biting the hand that fed him poison was perfect poetic justice. I felt with Sam's head being so messed up and him being so driven to find out one way or the other whether Dean was still in the grave, he wouldn't allow anything or anyone to stand in his way, not even Ruby.

And she learned the hard way - not just in this story but in canon on the show - that in the end, the brotherly bond is stronger than any other.

I just hope it survives season six.....

Thanks, Leslie. I'm glad you're enjoying this.

The Statement Bobby made...."Always on the outside looking in....No matter how many times the door is left open"...WOW!! That sums up Sam PERFECTLY! That is still how I see him.   How he's always been.  Since the Pilot.  He sees himself as an outsider or a freak.  Even within his own family.  Especially in his own family.  My heart breaks for him.

Author's Response:

Hi, Leslie,

I've seen Sam that way too, especially given the hints he's let out through the series about not fitting in anywhere. Even at his beloved Stanford, he admitted to Dean at the end of Skin that he still felt like a freak. I think the only place he's ever felt really comfortable has been with his brother, but even then after his visions started and he found out about being infected with demon blood, his fears took over and he began to think Dean didn't accept him either.

And I think that twisted thinking and overriding fear has led to him making some very bad mistakes and errors of judgement. Not that my beloved Dean made it easier on him at times, though, calling Sam a freak, etc.

But yes, I see Sam backing off from people, not letting anyone get close.

Thanks so much for reading.

"Back when hunting was simple - before you died - before I was ripped to shreds by hellhounds - before I went to the pit - before I got dragged out and put back together, only to get thrown into the middle of a freakin' holy war..."

That is an interesting and dean-way of summing up the events. awesome job!

Author's Response:

Hullo, and welcome to Supernaturalville - otherwise known as UnGen (short for our tag line - Unscripted Genius). I hope that you have lots of happy hours here trolling for stories.

Thanks so much for that. I spent a bit of time on that line of thought, trying to dig inside Dean's head and bring out just what he would have been feeling after the angels/demons fight and his breakdown by the side of the road.

It was hard to get a read on the boys during season four, especially Sam. And now we know why....*unhappy sigh*... Sam with his hidden addiction and Dean with his extreme PTSD made it difficult to get inside their heads.

So thank you for your feedback - I read it with a sigh of relief that you found it Dean-ish.

Hope you enjoy the rest of the story, and again, welcome to UnGen.

Lovely!  You write broken Sammy very well, and I have a thing for drunk Sam anyway!  Well done.

Author's Response:

I did see that on your bio page, actually - lol. I have high as a kite Sammy in an earlier story, Resort Breagadoir. He's such fun when he's off his face.

Thank you. And I'm pleased you enjoyed this one as well. Goodness, you're hoovering them up at a cracking pace.

Take care, and hope you managed to get some sleep before work the other night.

Wonderful story. I loved the brotherly bonding at the end. Great job! :D

Author's Response:

Thank you very much for that. I needed that brother moment - they had been so few and far between during season 4, so I sort of felt that one was long overdue - my poor Pollyanna soul starts to wither away after too much angst - lol.

Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks again for letting me know you dropped by.

Wow, really good story with a lot of insight into Sam's character and how it's been changing as the series progresses.

Sue

Author's Response:

Thanks so much for that, Sue. I'm glad that you enjoyed it.

I'm a Dean woman, but I love Sam, and I think that there is always a hell of a lot more going on in his head than what we see on the screen. So it's nice to delve into his psyche and see what comes to the surface.

Thanks so much for reading.

"Now you listen to me. I never thought that, okay? You're a pain in my ass, but I never, ever thought it was a sucky deal having you as my brother. You got that?" Aww, loved that. Really in-character, too.

"When she came to see me before we pulled out - she told me somethin'. She said, if you're gonna have faith, you can't just have it when the miracles happen. You gotta have it when they don't." He peeled one hand away from the mug and pressed it against his chest. "And maybe - maybe your prayers did get answered. I mean, I'm back, aren't I? Maybe it didn't happen when you asked for it, but..." YES!!! LOVED this!!! Wish they'd mentioned that salient fact on the show.

"When you asked him why you? He said it was because of what he saw in your heart. And maybe that's why the angels pulled you out of Hell. Because of what's in your heart, Dean. That's what makes you worthy of God's attention." Again, very true. I liked the tie-in here to what Roy said all those years ago.

""Dad was your hero, Dean. Who do you think has always been mine?...A tiny smile curled Sam's lips. "Granted, you're more like Hancock than Superman, but I guess I can live with that."" LOL Cute and sweet. I don't know much about Hancock, haven't seen the movie, but Dean's definitely more Will Smith than Christopher Reeves.

Nice job on this!

Author's Response:

I always figured that even though Dean was angry with Sam over his actions and the lies, I don't think that Dean for one minute regretted having Sam as a brother. And I don't believe that Dean would have seen the early days as Sam's fault.

And in a way, Sam's prayers were answered - Dean was pulled out of Hell and returned to him.

So chuffed that you enjoyed this, and that you decided to have a look and stick with it all the way through. And yes, Dean's definitely more like the whiskey-swilling, don't give a rat's arse anti-hero of Hancock, rather than the clean-cut do-gooder Superman.

Thanks again.

I'm SO glad Sam kicked Ruby to the curb here. So sad to see him hallucinating Dean with him as he drives. And Dean's understandably worried for his brother, hope he gets to him soon. His revenge on that nurse was pure evil. She was really rude, but still. Man, remind me not to get Dean (or you, LOL) mad at me!

Author's Response:

I wanted Sam to give Ruby a swift kick, too. I wasn't sure about her in S3, but in S4, I just knew she was up to no good.

Don't get Dean mad at you - lol. As for me, I'm harmless.

Just don't mention the dolly pot.......

Man, this just keeps getting more tangled. I thought everything would be okay once Sam figured out Dean was alive, but not so much. It's really sad to see his reaction as the flashes of time he's forgotten hit him. I loved when Bobby got through to him and he raced back to the room, feeling guilty for leaving Dean injured and alone. It's my favorite part so far.

Author's Response:

Thanks, hun. I figured Bobby was the best choice, since he was finding it really hard to believe that Dean was actually there. The shock of Bobby contacting him after all those weeks - in Sam's mind anyway - of silence would be enough to pull him up short and actually make him listen to what Bobby had to say.

But Sam's mind is a formidable weapon, especially when it's turned on himself. Let's see where he goes with the battle.

Oh crap! And now Dean's even more hurt? Yikes! Sam's a lot harder to convince than I would've thought. It makes me sad to think of him hallucinating Dean when Dean was in Hell.

Author's Response:

Yep, Dean's head's taken a real pounding in this one, but so has Sam's, and he's not doing so well either.

I could imagine Sam hallucinating Dean in his dark hours - and I always wondered whether Sam might have occasionally heard Dean's voice screaming for him in Hell, too. It would have been just the thing for the demons to use to help push Sam over the edge.

And yes, he's a tough audience, isn't he? Typical stubborn Winchester, just like his father. Let's see what Sam does when the evidence gets to overwhelming proportions.

I've been avoiding S4 and 5 fics, but I saw your nomination in the UnGen awards for this one, so I thought I'd check it out. Congrats, by the way!

Really interesting setup here. Clearly, Sam's brains got a little scrambled during the tangle with the poltergeist. Can't believe he just left Dean there! Ack!

Author's Response:

Thank you, Beth. I know what you mean about the S4 and S5 stuff. I was hesitant to even write in these last two seasons because of the fractured relationship between the brothers. My Pollyanna heart was pretty much breaking all through S4. But I managed to find a few bits of hope buried in the ruins of the brothers' bond. So hope you like it.

Awesome story!  So glad I joined this site and found your stories.  Poor Sammy just breaks my heart in this one.

Author's Response:

And hello again! You're bouncing around the site quite quickly - LOL.

Thank you for that. Have no idea where this came from - I'm like that with most of my stories - LOL - but amnesiac Sam was just too good to play with. And I had to admit, there were a few times, like when he was telling Dean that God didn't exist, that I had a tear or two while I was writing.

I'm a Dean woman through and through, but I love Sam, and it broke my heart to see his faith trampled into the dust all during Season 4, and then for him to find out he'd been a demon's tool all along - that was the final cruelty in my book. I'm really hoping for a huge restoration for Sam in S5.

Thanks again - I'm stoked that you enjoyed this one.

Great story Jules, with all the heart we're all missing from this season.  Thanks for the read - Kel ;)

Author's Response:

Thanks so much for that, Kel. I've been so worried about the boys all season, and we haven't seen the end of it yet, so I've still got a few weeks of nail-biting to go.

Damn how much do I wish TV Sammy would grow a set ;)  Great story so far, I intended to only read a chapter and have gotten completely sucked in - Thanks Kel :)

Author's Response:

Poor Sammy - my heart has been breaking for him this season, actually. He's being lied to and manipulated at every turn, and he can't see it.

Thanks, Kel - is it bad that I'm quietly pleased the story's sucked you in? LOL!

Ooh, she's onto me! There is every chance that his plan will include just that.

Thanks, Kel! Great to have you along.

And yes, not so good - I've hammered both boys again - lol!

I printed this story and took it with me for spring break vacation and loved it to pieces!  In fact I've been rec'ing it all over the place!  Wonderful story- loved the angst and brotherly bonding that took place! :0)

Author's Response:

Oh- thank you, Claudia! That's really so good of you to do that. This was something that I needed after episode 10 - I felt there was a lot more to say, especially on Sam's part, but he just didn't know what to do in the face of such a horrific revelation. So I figured it would prey on Sam's mind so much that when he got bonked on the head, his thoughts would zero in on Dean's time in Hell, because that was what he had been fixated on.

So glad you liked all the little brotherly moments. And thank you again for recommending this.

Hm....I don't know if I should laugh at poor Sam's confusion or cry at what I know will be Dean's reaction.  Nice start to the story, sorry I'm running a bit behind. ;) Kel

Hey, Kel! That's all right - I know you've been busy, hon. Hope you enjoy the rest of the story.

hello jules !!! just thought i would say another story that i loved !!! i have managed to convert some of the supernatural fans at my work to your fanfics as well so you should shortly be expecting a vast kiwi following !!!! :) keep up the great work - you're really helping me through yet another hiatus !!!

 becky

Author's Response:

Hi, Becky! Sorry I haven't replied to your last email - I have slipped a little behind in my correspondence. A vast Kiwi following? I'll have to tell my cousin-in-law - LOL. He's a Kiwi. He and my cousin got married on ANZAC Day, just to really cement the ties.

Thanks for that, and I'm stoked that you enjoyed it. Choice! Oh, know what you mean about hiatus - our Channel 10 is keeping very tight-lipped about when SN is returning. There's no sign of it yet - at the rate they're going, the boys will be here for the convention in April and we will still only have seen up to episode 8...*rolls eyes*...

Thanks, my dear friend. Yes, Season 1 is a bit of a holiday compared to S4, isn't it? The boys are really in over their heads this season.

Hi! - You did a terrific job with this story - I really, really liked it!

Author's Response:

Thank you so much! I'm chuffed that you enjoyed it. I hadn't planned on any season 4 plot bunnies hitting me so early, as I've been having a hard time getting a read on Sam this season, but this one kept biting at my heels - thankfully it turned out all right.

Not at the bottom of that hole, nor at the bottom of that bottle... And Dean, going back there, what a nice trip. Great chapter.

Author's Response:

Nope, he won't find Dean either place - LOL. But he will find him - or rather, Dean will find Sam - hopefully before he runs off again....

Dean upset because Sam took off? You think?! Damn kid! But poor kid also, he's so completely lost. Okay, too tired to finish the story this evening, but it's nice to be able to just hit the 'next' button. I should be more patient, a complete story is so good to read. Anyway, just what I needed tonight to unwind. I'll be back soon, thanks.

Author's Response:

Yes, Dean's going to ground him big time when he catches up with him. Thanks my friend - hope it helped you to relax, with everything that's going on in your world at the moment. Thinking of you...
