I'm glad that they had one day off before the tough stuff. Because I think they're going to need this time, even though Sam's still in a world of pain, they needed the break.

And so they're almost ready for the ritual. I'm not sure at this stage whom to be more worried about - Sam or Dean. Both are going to be in deadly danger. Dean from the diakka and Sam from the steadily growing infection.

I wonder whether Alan might just get his way after all, for the sake of safety. It will kill Sam being back in hospital, but if that's the only way for him to survive the ritual.....

Getting nervous now...

Hmm, Alan's still insistent about getting Sam back into hospital. And Sam's just as determined to stay out. Unless he really takes a dive, I know who I'm betting on to win this battle.

It looks like Sam's found the whole answer - but that last line was pretty scary, as is Sam's rapidly increasing deterioration. Thank heavens the new moon is the next night, so Dean doesn't have long to wait.

Somehow I don't think Sam's got that much time left.

Wonder what mystery project he's got going with Jessie?

And back to the last line - Sam's more worried about Dean than himself? This can't be good....

Whoa!  That was a shocker!  Good stuff!

Dean made tofu. I have to admit, that curry sounds great. Might have to take a peek at your website and find the recipe - see if all the ingredients are available out here. I love a good curry.

I could understand Alan's concern, but I'm glad that Dean stood firm on Sam's wishes. Being in the hospital was defeating Sam, despite having the best of care. Especially with him being so sensitive to what's going on around him, he'd have picked up on the fact that the medical staff were convinced he was terminal.

Poor Dean's really getting desperate now - and oh my gosh, ten days? And how many of those days are going to have any sort of quality to them, given how fast the infection is travelling through Sam's already overstressed body?

But it looks like there's some light at last - Geekboy's found the answer. I hope it's in time.....

Jules

Author's Response:

The tofu is a favorite recipe and remionds me I need to update my webpage :D Going back to the hostpital would not be good for Sam--or Dean honestly. I think Dean is reaching his breaking point. And YAY GeekBoy has the answer!

Oh.......I'm crying. That chapter did me in.

Sam being brought so low by the constant pain, hammering at him without any letup, not even in sleep. And the hopelessness of his situation driving him to remind Dean of his promise.

Dean clinging desperately to hope, not wanting to lose his brother, because if Sam goes, Dean goes too. And finally giving in, only to have Sam say he'll keep fighting, even though he thinks it's hopeless.

*wipes face*.....

Jules

Author's Response:

*Sends tissues* *hugs* I know it seems hard, things will get better, sometime, I promise

Oh, I can identify with the whole paper thing - I remember coming home from work one afternoon to find that it had snowed inside my flat - well, that's what it looked like after my monster had gotten onto the kitchen table and found the rack of paper serviettes - a fresh pack of 100 that I'd just put into the holder the day before. She'd had a ball - there were even bits of shredded serviette in the bathtub! The whole pack of 100. She'd had a great day....

I'm glad that Dean pointed out to Sam that he'd been using his left hand to play with Fim. He needed to know that it's a vast improvement over what the hospital expected.

But then came the terrible blow - Carrie's dead, and Sam has the same infection. And he can feel it getting worse, doing more damage.

This isn't going to be pretty....

Jules

Author's Response:

One day, I'll never forget it, I came home and the TP on the roll had been killed and the monster had gotten into the cupboard, skinned the wrapper paper off the unused rolls and killed that too. I have no idea what it swaid to him, but it was apparently rude...

I am loving this story so much!  Poor Sammy really is in a deep depression and Dean is so patient and loving and so domesticated!  Who knew Dean could cook?

When Sam called Dean a jerk, Dean wasn't the only one with tears in his eyes.  That was a great touch.

Author's Response:

Oh thank you so much, I could just hear that scene playing in my head! I figured it would be the way Sam would let Dean know

Four new chapters! Yay! And Sam's getting better, the meds are working, yay!

So, does this mean it's almost finished? Or are you up to something Muffy?

Loved the new banner too!

Dany

Author's Response:

Oh thank you so much! Isn;t the banner lovely? The story may be wrapping up, but I promise I won't hurry it!

How scary for both brothers. My own heart was racing when Dean collapsed in the hospital bathroom. Didn't blame Alan for slipping him a mickey finn in the guise of an aspirin. Dean needed the sleep.

Oh, Sam just keeps breaking my heart. The helplessness and hopelessness he felt when he learned he was back in the hospital and being moved back up to his room. Thinking for a moment that the apartment and Fim was all a dream, and feeling that he was going to be stuck forever in a nightmare of hospitals and pain.

Glad, though, that he and Alan got a chance to talk.

But red smoke instead of the usual demon black? That's certainly got Sam thinking. Wonder how this is going to impact his recovery - will it give him a spurt along having something to focus on besides the intense pain of his own body.

Loved Sam's thoughts though, in the depths of his own misery, wanting to help. And thinking to himself that as horrified as he is to find himself back in the hospital, he'd decided that he could handle a night because Dean needed it.

Jules

Author's Response:

I really didn't plan on Dean losing it, it just happened, he started and I couldn;t stop.

And poor Sam, he is so hard to write in this one. He just is so broken. It's killing me, but I cant stop.

*jaw hits desk with a resounding thud*........

The woman who shot Sam almost to doll-rags is his doctor's wife???????????????? What the.......

And why the flip is she dying? Oh my gosh.....*tugs hair again*...

Fim fetches. And he has a weird appetite for a cat - lol. Having said that, my monster used to love cheese. And she can hear a container of ice cream being opened a mile away. She also loves chicken, and feels the need to kill it first before she eats it...*sigh*...which usually results in tiny bits of chicken being strewn all over my kitchen floor....

Oh, forgot to mention - why is apple pie with cream so weird? I have it all the time. And not whipped cream either. Just normal cream that you pour out of a little bottle or carton. Thickened cream, we call it. Even better if the apple pie is heated first. Yum.

Poor Sam is so up and down, it's hard for Dean to predict how he'll react. But that level of constant pain is so wearing and so soul-destroying, it's a wonder that Sam wants to leave the apartment at all.  It's a testament to how tough Sam is that he's making the effort.

Oh, I hope that there's a light coming soon at the end of Sammy's long dark tunnel. And Dean's as well.

But I have a feeling that this news about Carrie is about to make things a whole lot worse.....

Jules

Author's Response:

It was Carrie, Alan's wife. Poor Alan, living with that.

I love pie with cream, but I've been told eating it that way is weird. My grandfather ate it that way, and I tried it and it's the only way for me. (Raspberry pie is even better that way)

Loved Fim dropping the stolen bit of roast onto Sam's chest - since Sam can't hunt, Fim's taken it upon himself to feed him - that's so sweet.

Thank heavens it was a bit of roast and not a nice juicy still alive mouse, like the one that my monster tossed onto the bed at 1am some years ago. Talk about a rude awakening.....

The struggle for Sam to wake and finally speak was heartbreaking, as was Dean's reaction at first when Sam kept saying his name. Until he stuttered out "Jerk" - then Dean knew Sam was most definitely still in there. Their code.

Dean was right. Hopefully he'll keep being right and the doctors wrong. It's a good sign that Sam's using his left hand to stroke the kitten, without even realising it.

Fingers crossed.....*wipes tear from eye*....

He had to be cruel to be kind there, didn't he? That was a hard scene - Sam struggling to keep standing, and Dean struggling to stay firm in his resolve to make Sam walk those two short steps to the bench. Not surprising that Sam exhausted himself so thoroughly.

And oh, didn't blame Dean for one second for punching that doctor out. Loved Nate's defense of his new friend, even to the extent of pouring coffee on the floor. I like Nate. His son Jessie seems nice too. Thank heavens that Dean had some decent people on his side while Sam battled for his very life.

So that's how they got Alan on the case, eh? At least he seems way better than the other doctors at handling Dean. And thank heavens Sam proved them all wrong. Dean was dead right - Sam should have been told. He needs all the information so he can work with it. Need to know basis never works with Sam - he just rebels against it.

That depression is a constant worry, as is Sam's level of pain. Those bullets must have done some terrible damage to our favourite psychic.

The hot tub scene was so scary. Was Sam trying to kill himself, or was he just trying to float, and the near-drowning was just a by-product of that. But how frightening for Dean to find his brother at the bottom of the tub, especially knowing how depressed Sam has been.

Here's hoping that first, Sam will open up to Dean and tell him why he did it, and second that the kitten will make a difference to the wounded man. Animal therapy is amazing - out here, they take animals to visit in nursing homes, and they make a huge difference to the elderly people inside.

And the kitten seems to know that Sam is fragile, and is taking it easy on him. And it likes him.

Fingers crossed.

Sam's such a mess, physically and emotionally - no wonder Alan has practically got him on suicide watch. And thank heavens Dean's taken pains to hide the medication under lock and key. He's not taking chances, and I don't blame him.

With the amount of pain Sam's obviously in, it's no wonder he's saying that Dean should have let him go instead of trying to save him. Making an attempt on his own life is just one tiny step away, if Dean doesn't watch him.

My heart broke for Dean, all alone with strangers, waiting for news outside the operating theatre, only to be told that Sam probably wouldn't make it.

Nate and Nancy seem like nice, good people though.

Oh my gosh, he was shot four times! No wonder he almost died!

But why? Why on earth did that woman shoot Sam? And where did she go? And what was on the bullets that has infected him?

Argh! *tugs hair*...too many questions!

Love how gentle Dean is with his fragile brother, and how he's hanging on for both their sakes.

Could understand how important it was for Sam to have that bit of dignity restored, especially since he's so helpless and weak. Just a simple thing like his being able to shower by himself gives a tremendous sense of worth and accomplishment.

And Dean's insistent pushing hit the right note - never bullying, but getting Sam to do a little bit more, hang onto the hope that he can do more each day and work towards getting better.

But that bit about the infection doesn't sound hopeful at all. That's downright scary. Just what did that woman do to him and why?

Poor Sam is so depressed and emotional, it breaks my heart. And so fragile.

Not good that they're both having nightmares about what happened in the bar that night. They need to talk, like Alan said.

So, whatever happened, Sam was close to  death, and still is, by the sound of it. Close to giving up. The pain must be almost overwhelming.

But he seems to have brighter moments, although it's taking all of Dean's skill to bring a smile to that poor, pale, pain-lined face.

Oh, Sammy........

What a sad but lovely picture of the boys.  Sam would be the only reason Dean would ever sell the Impala.

Muffy, you gave us a wonderful gift, four amazing chapters in a row. After months of despair finally a good news, Sam is getting better, woohoo . So a poignant story, beautiful work Muffy, I'm looking forward to more.

Reviewer: mizpah (Signed) · Date: 17/02/10 07:51 PM · On: Home Coming

A very bittersweet homecoming for Sammy. So whatever happened was so serious he's had weeks in a very flash hospital, and it looks like he's not expected to get better in a hurry, going by the modifications that Dean's done to the apartment he's found for them.

No hitting the road in the Impala after this hunt - if it was a hunt that they were on.

Sam's nightmares obviously have something to do with it - who was the woman and why did he feel afraid? And what did she do to him?

I liked Pooh from the coffee stand.

Hoping this whatever-it-is that has happened to Sam isn't permanent, although his doctor - and Sam - seem to think it is.

I've stopped lurking! Aren't you proud of me? *pats self on head*...

My goodness, it's been a year - you have been through the wars, hun. *hugs*

I remember the first time I read this, I had so many questions burning through my brain that I had to keep reading to find the answers. What happened to Sam, why was he in hospital and so frail that he needed a wheelchair, what sort of hospital has valet parking, and the list went on.

But the important one was the one that Sam asked - where was the Impala?

A little chapter, but with lots of hooks to snag the reader. *lets self be reeled into the story*...

At the time I wanted to reach through the screen and shake the story until the answers fell out - LOL. But this time I'll just read on, shall I?
