That was beautiful, Tree.  But now I'm sitting here trying to look like I'm not crying on my lunch break!  I'm not good or eloquent with reviews so I'm just going to favorite it and that should tell you a lot.  I don't favorite stories lightly!  :)

aw *fuzzy christmasy feeling inside*

Great oneshot, chick. Even though it's in the 70s outside and the sun's out, I feel like having a lil Christmas here. I don't know the story The Gift of the Magi but I sure loved this ficlet. And make no mistake: the angst and cold seeped through my body all the time. YUMMMMMMY. You just want him out in the woods in winter dontcha? Well, I don't object  there. My fav fantasies involve that too mostly...LOL among other stuff *winks*

Loved the twist of the Porters being ghosts. It's a lil funny to me that the professional ghost hunter didn't actually get it. But then again... who cares. It was a yummy thing to read.

Thanks, Ilka

I loved it! Great oneshot, even Dean can be victim of a ghost story... But the reward was worth it... Thanks for the read, and merry Christmas.

I read this just after it was posted, but couldn't think up a review that did the story the justice it deserves. Not sure I can, now, but I'll give it a bash.

You have captured Dean's wrestle with his conscience so well in the opening scenes - his need to see his brother warring with his chronic lack of self-esteem. The conflict was so real, and so true to Dean's character. Especially given the nature of the separation - the heated words exchanged, followed by the frosty silence. No wonder Dean wasn't sure how he'd be received.

And then to run almost smack-bang into the mysterious stranger on the road - and get caught up in the local ghost story - that was brilliant planning. I honestly thought that the man had either run off with the Impala, or had wrapped it around a tree and killed himself, not being able to handle the big, powerful car in the icy conditions. When it was revealed that it was the family version of the girl hitchhiking by the side of the road story, I just went, "well, hell, it could only happen to a Winchester - lol". That was a master stroke.

But what put the icing on the cake for me was the revelation that the ghosts actually repaid Dean for his kindness - in orchestrating the local man being out on that road and finding the Impala, then going to look for its driver, and finally, the phone call from Sam. I loved that stumbling, almost stutter that Sam gets when he's nervous - and you depicted that with perfection.

And that was a brilliant last line.

My soul longs for a happy ending. As I've said numerous times before, I'm a Pollyanna. They don't have to be overly mushy - they just have to have a little smidgen of sunshine or hope, and I'm a happy little veggie. And this one certainly did. Thank you for feeding my soul.....Jules

That was an awesome story. By helping the ghost family, he met Bill and he got a wonderful gift for Christmas, a call from Sam. Tree, Happy Holidays.

I liked your story, but it was kinda sad.

Dean all alone on Christmas Eve thinking of his family.  It did sound like Dean to help Paul and his family, especially since there were children involved, but still shocking when he let them drive away with the Impala.

I did smile at the end when Sam called Dean.  Thanks for letting Dean have his Christmas wish, to talk to his brother.

Thanks for sharing your story with us.

So cool!!!  I can't believe you somehow fit a SN story in the midst of a SN story....if you know what I mean!!  You and that stranded snowy ghost family had me going the whole time....just like Dean.  I'm so glad that in the end Dean got his Christmas reward.... Sam's call.  Great job!
