That final scene in the episode was so gut wrenching- it screamed for fanfics. Yours captures the darkness JA revealed. The self loathing, the utter despair. The best line, of course, is that Hell made him care about what happened to Dean Winchester. Great thought. Thank you so much.

I sometimes get the feeling that they are leaving us hanging on purpose just to see what all our mad minds come up with!! lol
Making Dean care about what happens to him more than what happens to himself would be hell for him wouldn't it? Hurting someone would be bad enough for him but doing it to save himself.... never really been Dean style, until now. Can't help wondering where they are going to go with that.

Wow. This was painful to read, but in a good way, if that makes any sense. What I mean to say is that this is very well done. That's probably why it's so hard to read. I think we're all sort of struggling inside with Dean's hell ordeal, and what horror it would have been to be pushed so far that he'd resort to torturing other people. 30 years is one heck of a long time. And I think you've sort of brilliantly hinted at Dean as torturer being part of his punishment -- that in inflicting pain on others he's doing just as much damage to himself. In the end I think that's what really broke him. Now I just hope that there's some way for him to heal. January is going to be an angsty month, I think!

I felt like that when I was writing it, so I know how you feel.
I think that not showing hell and leaving it to our own imagination is worse somehow that spelling it out. (and we all have great imaginations on this site!)
I think Dean broke because he realised that no one could save him, he gave up hope and then as you say he ended up in a worse position for him, torturing others.
January maybe hell for all of us!
