I actually don't believe John, with his fierce will to keep his family safe, would NOT jump in and dig Sam out vs giving up like written. Sorry, just not the John we know...

I really enjoyed this story. It was a great younger story, you really seemed to get the relationships down between the boys & each other & the boys (both individually & together) & John.

Cannot believe how gripped I was by this story! The plot was perfect, that the great John Winchester - the ever prepared General - was bested by a human threat!!! Ok yes, a serial killer, so not typically human!!!
Loved how you told the tale almost completely from behind John's eyes. You give more substance to him as a Father - even though typically he does not act on his natural parenting instints. He almost seems to have traded these in for those of a hunter. He realises that his path, the one he has picked for all of them is impossibly demanding, but seems unable to veer in any other direction.
My favorite piece is where John realises that although he is trying to protect his children, it is they who have been his salvation. Sam's ability to "call him on things" has stopped him going over the edge in his obsession to find the YED and Dean's unwavering faith in him is the source of his strength. I am not a John fan, but you have made me see him as a tragic hero and a stubbourn mule, rather than just the latter!

That was great. My heart was in my mouth when I thought Sam was dead, though. Wonderful job on the suspense. And a nice tie-in to Sam leaving for Stanford. But...I still want to kick John in the backside - how could he just sit there and not hug his sons? grrrr - that man.....

I love your approach on this-nice twist to John getting the boys involved in something less than supernatural.

LOL! Yeah, it seems whenever I write John, I always empathize with him more than I intend. He drives me nuts, but I really do understand him. I'm just glad it comes across fairly.
