Oh yes, I was SO glad to see Sam hit Francis.  It was VERY satisfying.  I'm sorry you've been feeling poorly, but I'm all caught up now, and am looking forward to more.  Feel better soon!

Author's Response:

I am so late in responding but I know you know why, so... ;)

Chapter Six is where the story really starts to diverge from my original outline.  Sam and Francis were supposed to have a formal duel, which was going to bring up subsequent angst on Vertiline's part not to mention yet another fight between Deane and Penelope...  But I really wanted to get on with the case file.

And it was pretty satisfying to have Sam punch Templeton.  Short and sweet.

I like how Penelope's scientists mind immediately started asking questions and coming up with theories about the death of Jessica and Mary Winchester.

This whole story makes me smile- you've made the Victorian theme work so well!  I'm almost all caught up, and my mind is buzzing with possibilities of where this story could end up!

Author's Response:

Penelope is nothing if not a scientist. ;)

And I'm thrilled the story makes you smile.  It has been part of my happy place when it comes to writing, and we're getting into the meat of the case file, now...

This is so much fun.  The "Engine of Love's Assault" made me laugh out loud.  Vertiline is a fabulous character, I can't wait for her to tell Penelope off for Mrs. Jennings, who is awful.  How interesting that she's attracted to Sam.  Dean might not get all the action?

Author's Response:

I'm thrilled that you're enjoying it!  Vertiline was one of those characters most people took some time to like, and I always adored her from the beginning.  (Not that I don't adore Penelope, either... ;-P)

To answer your question would give away a good portion of the story. ;)

Thank you for the heads up that you're working on this one too.  I'll get caught up on this now, so I'll be ready for both.  I LOVE THE ERA!!!!  I just had a Victorian/Goth/Steampunk Halloween party that was a ton of fun, so I'm glad to be reading this now.  The language made me smile and had me thinking of the Georgette Heyer books.

It may take me longer to get caught up on this one- busy times.  I'll let you know what I think!

Author's Response:

Thank you so much!

By Gaslight is my other fandom labor of love.  Though I think my Victorian Studies professor would be most put out as to how I am actually putting all those classes into practice. ;)

I've been forgetting to mention how I love the insights into the characters that the journal entries bring, and I'm glad you included them in your story. And yes I found it very satisfying for Samuel to thrash Templeton the nit-wit.

Author's Response: Originally, Templeton was going to challenge Samuel to a duel - which would not have been uncommon for the era - but it was more fun just to have Samuel knock him out with one punch.  Plus, I like showing that Samuel is just as much a "fighter" as Dean, which is something we see in the show.  As for the journals...  That's a fairly important aspect to the era; keeping journals was quite common and I felt that it did add an extra dimension to the story, so thank you so much for picking up on that!  And, as always, for your kind words.

When reading or watching something, goosebumps to me are always a good indicator that it's a masterful piece that pulls me in and doesn't let go. And I have them in droves. lol.

Author's Response: Never underestimate the power of Dean Winchester, a desk, and a skirt that hides all manner of sins.  I am thrilled that you're sticking with me to the end, and I promise there should be a new chapter coming sooner as opposed to later.  (I've been ill since October of last year, and it's put a serious cramp into my writing.)

"Metallicarriage? Well, Deane would like the name, at any rate. Philistine."

""Deane!"

"Samuel!"

"Why can you not be silent?"

"Why can you not be silent?""

Sorry I know I'm picking out the humour, but I love to laugh. lol. The story so far has been spectacular and aside from the humour I am very fond of the full spectrum of emotion you've given to the story.

Author's Response: There is nothing wrong, to my mind, of picking out the humor in the story.  I consider this my "happy place" - along with the modern-day AU featuring the same characters - so I tend to stress the humor myself ;)

"After dinner, we should take to wandering the halls wearing nothing but our shoes," Deane commented; Samuel Winchester was not the only son of their father who could adequately test a theory, Oxford education or not.

"That sounds like an excellent plan, Deane."

"I think you will appear particularly fetching if you wear your green socks, as they will provide a nice balance to certain extremities," Deane added. "Perhaps we could also tie bells to ourselves."

Samuel nodded. "Of course."

"Blast it, Sammy!" Deane slammed his hand down on the nightstand between the beds. "Are you even listening to me?"

This had me in stitches for a long time. And again thank you for leaving footnotes to enlighten us about Victorian customs. This is very fascinating.

Author's Response: That was one of my favorite scenes to write.  I like the challenge of writing the boys in character while placing them in a historical setting.  Again, thank you for reviewing. ;)

*Falls to floor* I love the wit. And again the description it brings the story to life as well as that era.

Author's Response: The best part of writing this story for me is actually the humor I can bring to it.  I see this, in part, as a comedy of errors though I am bringing in some classic horror themes as well.  I've been trying to write it in the style of a Victorian melodrama, and I think the humor pushes the characters beyond the stereotypes involved. Besides, who can pass up the idea of Samuel creating an EMF reader using a ceramic dinner plate. ;)

Oh my God. This is so awesome how can it not get more reviews???!!! Ok I guess I'm just as guilty since I've read this and not reviewed I'm stupid shy sometimes. But this is so lovely and vivid and amazing it blows me away. I appreciate that you've taken the time to explain some of the Victorian era customs and etiquette to people who are not familiar with it like myself.

Author's Response: Thank you so much!  I'm actually fairly shy myself when it comes to leaving reviews, so I can definitely appreciate where you're coming from. ;)  I have been studying the Victorian era since college, where I minored in it, and I'm glad that the information I've been relaying in the A/N for the story was helpful.  I worried that folks might consider it too much.

Oh my Gawd! - This is Excellent so far!!!! - Can't wait to keep on reading!!

Author's Response: Thanks!  This story is my guiltiest of pleasures, though I am afraid my Victorian Studies professor would be shocked to know how I've put those years to use. ;-P
