You were right about needing Kleenex for this fic, from the get-go it brought a lump to my throat. So true that Dean would have remembered Sam's birthday, putting the letter and present in Bobby's drawer so the old hunter would find it and give it to his little brother. Perfect the present being limited edition m&m's (don't have that sort in the UK, just the yellow, brown and blue packets), something true to Dean's heart but also representing the cherry chocs he remembered his little brother eating all those years ago. The letter did it for me, so emotional but so Dean, I totally choked up there. Could so see Sam rereading the letter and carefully folding it and loved that it didn't get Sam crying as I expected but gave him fond memories of his big brother and allowed him to get some peaceful sleep, still clutching Dean's words. Awesome Sarah
Author's Response: Hi Sarah, Thanks so much for reading and reviewing Last Gift. It's one of my favorite stories, because, for once, the ideas flowed easily into the keyboard, and it just *felt* right. Sue

Brought tears to my eyes and a craving for M&M's to my belly....and here's me wanting to give up chocolate.... Great job - thanks for sharing this. Jules
Author's Response: Hi Jules, Thank you for the lovely review. I don't often write a tearjerker, it's good to know that I can reach my readers emotionally when I do. Sue

Sue Thet's just sweet...cherry sweet! I really enjoyed the emotion without over sentimentality, very Winchester and Bobby added a wonderfull 'family' layer to the story. Very realistic and yup tissues were called for. bev xx
Author's Response: Hi bev, Thanks for this review! Emotional and realistic can be a hard combo to pull off, I'm glad that I succeeded. Sue

I just happened to stumble upon this fic and I'm so glad I did, even if it ripped my poor heart out and then stamped upon it for good measure. 'I don't have to ask you to remember me, and I hope that I never forget you.' ^^That's when I started bawling into my hankie. Oh poor Sammy, how is he ever going to cope without Dean? Wonderful fic.
Author's Response: Hi daisymay, Thanks for the awesome review! I haven't the foggiest idea how Sammy can cope without Dean, we'll have to see what K and company come up with in September. Sue

Very cute. I really like the M&M idea, and the letter from Dean was very cute. Well done!!
Author's Response: Thanks for the review. I've been wanting to write an M&M story ever since I read and was blown away by Strig's 365 Peanut M&Ms. Sue

Well girl you made my mascara run but after such an emotionally charged piece of writing it was worth the price of having panda eyes. From Dean offering support from beyond the realms of hell, to M & M's and Bobby you give Sam memories, good ones, he so desperately needed. Loved it. Thanks so much for sharing it with me.
Author's Response: Hi rozzy, Sorry I made your mascara run, hope you had a tissue handy. Thank you for the stars and I'm glad you enjoyed this emotionally charged piece of writing. Sue

Yep, you got me... I'm sitting here bawling! Every so often you read a story that is perfect and you wonder why in the heck you didn't think to write it. Then you wish you had and finally you simply have to bow down to the author and say thank you. Thank you... well done! B.J.
Author's Response: Wow, B.J., thank you for the amazing review. You're welcome and I'm stunned. Sue

So glad for that Kleenex warning. This did both the M n M nation and Dean's awesome brother skills justice!!! Of course Dean would find a way to make Sam's special day, special one last time - Winchesters have this way of reaching beyond Hells boundaries don't they?! Enjoyed the snap shot of Bobby fulfilling the Father figure role for Sam here. Think your version of the older hunter was perfect, ever practical ever watchful Bobby is the safest pair of hands to catch Sam after Dean falls. Lastly you capture Dean's tone effortlessly, with small bittersweet brother notes - Dean having read Sam's diary, the ever present "watch out for the car" reminder, and the overall effect of that letter is just so heartwarming .... and throat choking!!!! My favorite line was your very well put; "You brought so much light and laughter into my world, I hate to think that I took it all away from yours when I left." Thanks for the read. Congrats on the feature!!!!
Author's Response: Thank you for the marvelous, detailed review. Saying I captured Dean's tone is a great compliment, because I am inclined to be more Sam-like in my thinking (even tho I'm a Deangal). Thanks again for the lovely review! Sue

Seems like a good combination of the two to me ma'am. Thank you so much for writing a story for Angela. My sister's going to be surprised how many people have taken time out for her and I know she'll like this one. Thanks again, Sam (and Jake and Nate)
Author's Response: Sam, Thank you for taking the time to let me know what you thought of my story. You, Angela and your brothers continue to be in my thoughts. Keep safe in your next tour of duty. Sue

WOW! cried right through that one Brilliantly done. I think I'll go and eat some M&M's.
Author's Response: Amethyst, You're a woman after my own heart - emotional eating, I can relate. I actually munched on a few Winchester M&M's while writing this, to capture the mood, yeah, that was it. Sue

Beautifully written! I love that you included Bobby. "I don't have to ask you to remember me and, I hope that I never forget you." Ahhh-rip my heart out! That was when the tears rolled down my face.
Author's Response: Shannondoah, Thanks for the review. I had to include Bobby, he's the only family Sam has at the moment. Dean knows Sam isn't going to forget him, and I harked back to what Ruby told Dean at the end of MM for the last part of that line. Sue

I should have taken that kleenex warning seriously. As soon as Bobby found the package tears started to build 'cause I just knew. And then it went from there, until my face was wet with tears. And I don't do chick-flick moments. This really tugged at my heart, the letter was beautiful in that it was so Dean, always the smart ass. It doesn't take expensive or lavish gifts to leave lasting memories. Dean's gift was a package of M&M's, something that would normally be consumed within a matter of minutes and then forgotten about. The simple gesture and the letter are one last good memory that Dean was able to give to Sam, and Sam will keep that in his heart forever. I think everyone can learn from this story, I know I have. Thank you Swellison!
Author's Response: WynterSun, Thank you for the marvelous review, and the stars. I wanted to write something meaningful about family, and your words tell me I've succeeded way beyond my expectations. Sue

Oh, Sue, this was wonderful. Yes, I did need a hanky. But the final image of Sam sleeping, curled around the letter was a perfect antidote to the tears. Simply wonderful. --cricket
Author's Response: hi cricket, Thank you for the glowing review. I'm glad you found the last scene comforting, as intended. Sue

Thank you. I can honestly say that I DID need Kleenex! I appreciate your perspective and I love that Sammy received a little something from his big brother to make his heart not hurt, quite so much.
The line from Bobby to Sam "I'm sorry I forgot your birthday. Someone else didn't." was perfection.
So, from a beautiful, (and rare!) SUNNY day on the coast of Oregon...thanks again and keep up the great work!
Author's Response: Hi writer2b, Thank you for the lovely review. Dean is always thinking of Sam, so I figured he would've covered this year's birthday to, as you so nicely phrased it, make his heart not hurt, quite so much. Sue

Hi ya, Sue. Congrats! You got featured! Well done! Awesome one shot there. Liked it. Sad and happy. Great combination. And I loved the old-lady-M&Ms. So like Sam to enjoy them. Not that I prefer peanut. I'd go for the normal ones. Plain chocolate. OK. Rambly!!!?? ...You brought so much light and laughter into my world, I hate to think that I took it all away from yours when I left.... OMG. You had me in tears here. And I so swore I wouldn't need a kleenex! I thought we were supposed to write something cheerful! I martyred my brains to think of something like funny! And you go and write something sad! So glad you did though. Love it. ..."You read my diary, jerk!" .... Excellent idea. Just when sadness and tears were at their heights you change the aspect. Brilliant and expertly done. Haha. Sam writes a diary (what a girl!) whereas Dean a journal (translates from Testosterone into English as "diary", hehehe). ....I don't have to ask you to remember me, and I hope that I never forget you. .... Oh, and here we go again. Torrents streaming down my cheeks. Love every bit of it! Feature well deserved! Have some nice stars too! Cheers and thanks for sharing, Ilka aka RoweenaC
Author's Response: Hi Ilka, Thank you. I was thrilled and surprised when I logged on and saw the featured story blue ribbon. It certainly made my day. Dean has a hunter's journal, like John's, and we even see it onscreen. Or at least, that's my interpretation of the scene in Something Wicked. It's a thin black book, so I figured he had more than one of them. You zeroed in on the most emotional lines and let me know that they affected you, as intended. Thank you so much for that. Sue

Sigh....it's so sad....and Dean's so sweet when he left the M&Ms as a b'day pressie to Sam...who says Dean don't do chick-flicks?? :p
Author's Response: Hi Lyn, Thank you for the review. I think Dean's the only one who says he doesn't do chick-flicks :-p Sue
