God, I loved this episode. All of John's motivations laid bare, all his sons' fears that he was dead or didn't care laid to rest. And the presence of the man! I never thought the boys could be pushed into the background, but they were when he was in the room. (Kudos to the actor-you could believe implicitly that John was the most accomplished hunter of his time, and the one who would truly bring down his nemesis one day.) And seeing how young and innocent Sam still was breaks my heart. He really thought he could leave hunting after killing the YED. He still had hope, even while he was crushing Dean's. Makes me cry. Makes me proud. Of all of them. Heroes, every one. Sniff....

Well, I'm glad that Sammy sees them as family. Poor Dean, his whole life has been protect his family, and his own personal desires take the back seat. You did an excellent job with their thoughts and actions.

Wow! this is a great tour-de-forcce of all the Winchesters' thinking during Shadow. Cool! Except, I thought Dean said, "Yeah! I want you to leave the second this is over, Sam!" (echoing back what Sam said he wants), not "I don't want..." Hmm, I'll just have to go watch it again and see which version is right;-)

Ooh, you took one of my fave moments in the series and make it your own!! i think it's great. you did such a good job in sorting out their thoughts. and yup, i think it's what defines a family, although Dean could use less of his self-discrimination. :)

Loved this story, lots of well written emotion in it.
Dean just breaks your heart doesn't he? He never feels as if anything that he does is right, and he always tries to do what's best for his family, despite what it costs him.
Loved the way you put the thoughts through the quotes from the episode. Nicely done.
