This was lovely. A very nice moment of commiseration and comfort between John and Sam. I loved this: “The pain doesn't go away. Not completely. But the love doesn't either.” *sniffle* Congrats on the nomination in the UnGen awards! It's well-deserved!
Author's Response: Thanks, man! I'm glad you liked it :) It's pretty much my favorite topic, the John and Sam dynamic...

Oh yeah! I can see why this was nominated for the best John story! Wonderful.
Author's Response: *does double take* Was it? Where?? Awesome! I've been ridiculously out of the loop lately- damn RL! Thanks so much for checking out the story. I so would have loved to see more John-Sam scenes on the show...

Really liked this one. I'm glad Sam came to understand his father a little better, before he was gone, but I wish John had trusted Sam enough to tell him the truth. All those years of Sam blaming his father for forcing the boys to live a life on the run and for putting Dean in danger for his own vengeance... I just wish Sam could have understood that the demon would have come for him regardless of where he was or what he was. That John didn't ruin their lives, he saved them. Sam deserved to love his father unconditionally, even if only for a day. And he deserved to know the truth about himself so he could be prepared to fight for his soul. It might not have changed anything, but we'll never know, will we? I truly love John and what he did for his family and the world, but he made a lot of wrong choices in his dealings with Sam. Maybe he was too afraid to let himself feel as Sam still could, because it would have been too much like looking in a mirror. Thanks for the bittersweet moment between these two strong men. And I agree, the bastards killed John way too early.
Author's Response: Heya, thanks for reding, glad you liked it. My favorite what ifs always come from those points you mention: what if John had told Sam what he knew, what if John had never found out himself, Would Sam have been able to save Jess if he knew what John did...? And my new favorite: What if Mary had just stayed in bed like Dean told her to?

Very nice! I enjoyed it immensely. Have to admit, though - I'm not a fan of John, but you showed a side of him that he didn't often reveal, and in such a way that was true to character. Thanks for sharing this. Jules
Author's Response: Thanks for reading! I'm glad you don't think I went off character with John, I find him very challenging to write. Which is probably why I always had a thing for him. Well, that and (and don't go quoting Freud on me here) damn is the man sexy...

I always thought there was a soft spot in John and I totally agree...they killed him off way too early!! Thanks for sharing that with those of us that don't have the patience to rummage through ff.net.
Author's Response: Yup, those tough gus will surprise you once in a while...that's what makes them so interesting... but hey at least he lives on in fanfiction :) I'm thoroughly enjoying 'No Vacancy' by the way, hope there's more of it soon :)
