That's a bitter sweet combination of stories, but you're right, they do fit together neatly.

Great story!  I enjoyed your analogy to Old Yeller and The Outsiders.  I also loved that both Sam and Dean felt that surviving the other brother was worse than dying.

Sam's decision to leave to save his brother is a different perspective and one I totally can embrace.

Wow!  Very powerful thoughts.  You really drove home the bond Sam and Dean have.  The super side-kick was funny then Sammy had to say that his big brother was his super power and I melted.  The same thing happened when you mentioned that Sam's hair smelled of baby shampoo.  I did get a big kick out of John saying that everyone pets Sam's ass.  Oh, the visual!

Your writing always hits me hard and leaves me thinking.  Especially these two pieces. (and if i have neglected reviews in the past, forgive me.)  I really enjoyed the dissection you did of each brother's thought process, where they diverged and how they were yet parallel.  I also loved the connection to such a classic book and how both of them drew different messages from it.  And Dean seeming to able to read Sam's mind, brilliant, with all of the practice he's had. It will leave me wondering for a long time whether Dean knew what Sam was not saying when he replied "He came back."  Great stories.

Very powerful. Your analogy to the plot of a novel and the characters roles within novels was amazing. You are such a divergent thinker and this comes across strongly in your work- this fic in particular.

I loved everything about this fic, especially Sam reflecting on the roles and relationship of characters to justify that huge decision he will make.

Dean's response "like riding off in the Impala alone" is a kicka$$ comment when we consider that it isn't just pertinent to this "chapter" in the boys life, but to the future we know they are headed.

John is such a walking conundrum and I resist my instant urge to get mad at him in your work when I realise that his love for his boys is his driving force. You give him an edge that I can't help but admire.

For me, the real hard punch of this fic is Sam's realisation that Sam must leave not only to save his own life, but more importantly to keep Dean's. Its so much more than just wanting 'normal' - it's why he wants that normal. Stunning work.

I love how you get behind the emotions and motivations in every story and this one is a shining example of that talent. *standing ovation*

A very relevant chapter in the Brotherhood, indeed the Winchester saga. Tha moment when Dean grew up in a single incident, and of course it had to be fear for Sam that triggered it. No wonder reality was a hard, cold slap. I felt his panic and fright every step of the way.

As usual, your description of emotions as well as the action was brilliant. Dean's internal reflection was heartwrenching, especially around his mother. And RJ, the baby shampoo just hammered home Dean's thoughts and fears that this baby was now in the game - wow, it sure hit me.

John's callous handling of the boys emotions always feel so harsh, but then you give us a peek into what's really going on for him deep inside - leaning on the door, listening to his boys. The father might be buried so far under the hunter and the warrior that it feels almost extinct, but it's still there. Pity he hides it from his boys in the name of the game.

Thanks for the ride, great work.
