You do such a good job at emotional portrayals that sound just like the boys in these one shots. I am impressed.

Author's Response: Thank you so much for the compliment!  And thank you for reviewing.  annA.

Anna, Finally made it over to review ... and SO glad I did because whatever alterations you made have SOLD this!!!!

This piece is stunning in its Dean like logic - the idea of there always being a choice is fundamental to his character - he is a 'all or nothing kind of guy' as you put it. Dean's 'all' is the courage with which he makes the decision to choose and with your clever inner monologue you lay this bear for us. Dean is not a soldier following Daddy's orders - he made the most profound choice of his life at the age of four, and all other actions and decisions seem to flow from that. Loved how you explained that. You had some amazing lines to go with all that convincing logic. Loved this;

"He understood choices. More than most he knew that no matter how easy or hard the initial plunge, the follow-through was a bitch. Was what kept you up at night."

But my favorite of the piece is the realisation that with the change coming over Sammy, his life long strategy must change too. Now his 'choices' don't merely exert his only form of control, but it's almost like ha has swapped roles with Sam - Dean chooses to believe in something higher... he is giving up some of his 'control' in exchange for hope.

"And most difficult of all, Dean had to choose to live for his brother instead of to die for him.

And pray it was enough."

Fantastic first fic - very deep stuff.

Anna.

Yup, I get it. When the world is a maelstrom of chaos and you are a wild gale-tossed leaf in that terror then you will take control of the one thing that is within your gift and that is yourself and your responses to the mahem surrounding you.

Dean's control is his love of Sam, his Sammy.

Nicely done.

bev xx

Author's Response:

how poetic are you?

thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

Anna, this was a beautiful piece of heartfelt writing and I found it very moving. I'm so glad you got the courage to post and share this with the rest of us and I hope you have a lot more planned because I for one would like to read a lot more from you!

Well done!

Author's Response: Awe.  Thank you so much for your kind words, they mean a lot.  I'm glad you enjoyed it so much.  Don't know about the "a lot" more planned, we'll see.  oh.  i'm folding your paper cranes between words. (smirk)

I like the beginning, I immediately knew this would be good. It was great how you compared the things that Dean could control to the things that he couldn't control. This is very nicely written, thoughtful but simple. These two lines may be my favourites: "Now to protect Sammy from the Dark he had to protect Sammy from Sammy. And most difficult of all, Dean had to choose to live for his brother instead of to die for him." Really well done!

Author's Response: thank you!  it makes me smile to know that you enjoyed it so much. thank you.

No wonder you got my fic. Choice for a Winchester is everything and you have captured Dean's inner reflections on why this is so vital for him in one fell swoop. We know that Dean's cool and tough exterior covers a deep thinker and his interrogation of the events of his life through the filter of 'making a choice' through your words is incredible.

I really liked how you teased out what is in his control and what is not, very clever.

And I especially loved "And most difficult of all, Dean had to choose whether to live for his brother or to die for him." Awesome!

...and after reading your bio, your pen name is perfect!

Author's Response:

Thank you so much for your glowing review!  I'm simply agok and smiling to split my face.

...and i'm glad you like the pen name.  i'm rather fond of it too.

Woah ~ the ending was the killer, well done!

Nicely written and good to see the simplicity of it all addressed. I've always found him an all-or-nothing kinda guy too - although we do argue about that in our little circle, LOL

Loved this!

Author's Response: Well, thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. you're my hero for reviewing.

Interesting idea and I do like the line "And most difficult of all, Dean had to choose to live for his brother instead of to die for him."

I admit I expected more of Dean's thoughts about his choice to go to hell in exchange for Sam's life especially considering its probably the biggest choice someone could ever be expected to make.

Author's Response: Thank you for the review.  I'm glad you liked it.  And I thank you also for the constructive criticism, it's made me look at the story through fresh eyes.  I tried to focus on the fact the Dean making the deal was inevitable because every choice he makes is really the choice "take care of Sammy."  Now I know I may have left it out a little too much.  Thank you.
