well-written as usual...Can just see the pride on John's face regarding his firstborn......the selfless one ...the giver.....Sam always the receiver...grateful in his own way but never wanting to sacrifice like John & Dean have done....

I don't think we can really blame Sam for that. I think that, in a way, they were given a choice between those two possible lives, and it's everyone's right to choose to be safe, to have a 'real life'. Part of what makes Dean so fascinating to me as a writer is the fact that he chose the opposite, and the implications thereof.

I went back and read The Only Thing Necessary and it's great.....this one as well....I like Dean's answer....
“Someone has to. Someone has to face up to this,” you answer, gesturing at the flames again.
Maybe sometimes Dean wishes he doesn't have to face up to this?

Author's Response: I've no doubt he does. But that's his strength: doing the right thing BECAUSE it's the right thing. And I just found myself wondering when he first found that inside himself... Thanks for the review!

Once again you have captured the huge and intricate history and relationships that are the Winchesters, succinctly and in freakishly few words.
Absolutely awesome! Your are a deep thinker and an articluate writter. As usual, you leave me mulling things over in my mind long after I have finished reading your work. And as usual, I feel an intense need to analyse it bit by bit, but this time I will let well alone as you have said it all with words, memories, emotions and nuances.

Analyse all you like, my dear. The only thing you'll find in there is my selfish need to pinpoint the exact place where Dean made a conscious choice to live his father's life, and Sam made a choice not to.
