Dean's astute perceptions of his father's needs are spot on.  Even at such a young age, he was taking care of his family.

I like that you wove the other psychic kids into this story.  It makes a steady consistency to hold it to the original.

Brilliant!  John's so capable of fighting baddies but just as helpless as any other parent at protecting his child from disease.  I love that you showed John as a tender father.  I think sometimes we're too hard on him.

Dean's conversation with Pawstor Jim was very revealing.  It's only right that he would choose his mother over hundreds of innocent victims to save.  His dedication and his battle cry of 'not fair' are so perfect for a young boy.

So glad Sammy's better, although I never trust Winchester vacations - or Winchester trips to the woods for that matter! lol.  Nice update!

Author's Response:

Who would trust Winchester trips into the woods? Something is always bound to happen. Haha. Thanks for reading.

I really like this side of John, even if only we are witnesses of how much he loves his kids, he's doing his best in a desperate situation without his beloved Mary fighting dark forces but raising his sons alone). I think Dean still belives in angels because Mary did (she always said that angels were taking care of the boys not her) and deep inside he belives in God. Good work, thanks.

Author's Response: I'm glad that you're enjoying John in this story. He's so very important in the series and everyone discards him as an abusive father - which was far from the truth. I too do think Dean, deep down inside, believes in angels. Dean's always been confused on the subject it seems. Going through what he did, almost any kid in his position would be feeling the same.

Yay!  I'm your first review.

This would be such a sad piece, (I can so relate to John) if not for Dean's rebellious attitude.  I especially love where Dean tells Pastor Jim his dad would beat his ass for calling him an angel.  Luuuuv it!

Author's Response: Yay, first reviewer! Isn't that always such a great feelin? I couldn't have people crying on me with this chapter, and Dean always seemed like a little terror growing up. I mean, having to take care of Sam all the time and listen to his father all the time, Dean had to be a brat to someone. Haha. Glad you liked it.

I love this story!  I love that it shows the real emotion of the Winchesters.  Later in life, they become dysfunctional and don't always get along, but now they are a real family.

You've captured that feeling of family in the way John has to keep touching his children, in the way he takes the blame for Sammy's illness, in the way Dean keeps curling up with his little brother.  This is such a beautiful chapter!  A masterpiece!

Author's Response:

I hate when writers portray the Winchester family as: John was away hunting for days on end and Dean, who is a child, took care of Sam solely by himself. I think a lot of people pass over the fact that, granted John made mistakes, he was their father and he loved them more than anything in the world.

So, I'm really glad that you love it. I mean. John's always been the best father that he could be. In a time of crisis, he would be there for them and not anywhere else.

Straight into the panic, I felt my breath catch with your first sentence. And then a ch of full on intensity. John living through every parent's worst nightmare - you allowed John to show his vulnerability.

Your flashback was was unreal to show us distance travelled for all the Winchester boys, but especially John's journey as a traumatised father and why his relationship with his eldest son is so strong - the history of John and Dean as partners with a shared understanding, more than just father and son. *bravo*

Loved the visual of Dean determined to go in the ambulance and my heart melted at your words "they needed to be a family". You hammered that home with your beautiful description of Sammy as their "ray of sunshine...the beacon in thier dark lives" - to separate them now would be unthinkable. Fantastic work!

Your scene of the brothers asleep on the bed with their heartbroken father watching over them was so sad. Your description of a little boys panic and struggle when he wakes to a tube and a hospital bed was enough to rip my heart out *sob*

Great job on the angst here. I'm feeling every bit of it! Hurry up Jim, John needs you more than ever!!

Author's Response:

A lot of writers and fans alike forget that John was first and foremost a parent and, like any parent, would be scared out of their wits if something happened to one of their children. So I was really adament to write a story about any parent's worst nightmare. Even with so many nightmarish things out in the world, John isn't scared of monsters or demons but rather most scared at the prospect that Sam is seriously ill.

John and Dean always had a great bond. Dean always felt obligated to stay with his father, to hunt with him, to carry out the family legacy while Sam was more reluctant to join the crusade. I think it does all double back to when Mary died. Dean and John were the ones who had to adapt their lives without her. Sam doesn't remember any of it. He's only known hunting and the men in his family. There is no Mary or home or anything like that.

I'm really glad you enjoyed this story so much. Thanks so much for reading and reviewing.
