Ava woke to the pure stench of death. Her body was sore and her head wasn't working, but saddly her eyes were. Around her was people and darkness. They were laying on the ground sleeping expect for her and a man with a tattoo on his arm. Her mouthed formed the words Help, but no sound came out. Then she saw  beside her was bars. Thick heavy steeled bars. Outside was torches and old wooded walls. Then as if by magic, she could move. She got to her knees and walked over to the man and started to poke him. "Hello? Please whats going on?" Ava asked her eyes fearful, her body shaking from fright. Then man eyes then stared at her.

There was no pupile no color expect white. Then blood slowly started to come out of mouth, falling slowly on his jacket which she now noticed that was leaking something. She then cranned her neck to look at his back. A butcher knife was sticking out with the edge sticking in his skin and blood was pumping itself down his back. Ava screamed and jumped back into someones arms. "Hush little girl. You'll wake the gaurds" The soemone said. Ava turned to face a woman who looked about 24. "What gaurds?" Ava asked her voice shaking just as much as her body was.

"My name is Riley" Riley said her sad blue eyes looking into Avas. Riley was wearing a ripped red dress and mascra was on her face as if she was crying. Little blond curls hung from around her head. She was also earing small sliver hoops. Some how she brought color to the place Ava was now calling "Hell". "Dear girl we've been dragged into somthing we can't get out of. Soemthing supernatural" Riley said her voice soft yet cold. "Watch" she said holding up her palm . Nothing happened for a second then a thick metal rod appeared out of nowhere in front of Riley. "What! No...no..no. This can't be happening. I should be home with my 'feincee" Ava said becoming hystrical. Riley put her hand on Ava's shoulder. "He dead. Like all of us he killed the person we love the most. He killed my husband, Charlie" Riley said showing no emotion. Ava then started to cry, but Riley then slapped her across the face. Ava held her face in so much pain, that the tears stopped. Ava stared at Riley in surprise.

       "Crying helps no one" She said her voice showing no compassion. Before Ava could say anything a loud metal grinding sounded form inside the room. A door opened a revealed a young man wearing a old fishing jacket, but something was horribling wrong. His eyes were coal black. He smiled at Ava. Such a smile couldn't belong to somthing like him. The man made a whistle sound and the bars opened. Ava stood up to run out, but Riley pulled her down. "STOP! We have to escape!" Ava whispered fericly. "No, He's not come for you" Riley said looking over at the wall. Ava followed her gaze and saw a young boy no more than 13 being dragged by an invisible hand out of the large cell. He started to scream and then they were gone.

 "What in all hells is going to happen to him, demons only know" Riley said. "Why are we here?" Ava said her eyes looking fearfully at Riley. "We're what the hunters call The Others" Riley said her voice echoing off the stone cold walls.

Tears of pain leaked as he stumbled out into the parking lot, a gasp of shock escaping his lips even as he felt Dean catch him. His eyes were open but seeing something entirely different from the face that was speaking to him. As Sam’s face twisted with the awful sight that he was witnessing in his mind, he couldn’t find the voice to describe it to his brother, didn’t have the heart to relate the vision to him. Even as the awful pain dulled to a throb in the back of his mind, even as his sight cleared and blurred back to normal so that Dean’s frantic expression was visible, even as he saw in Dean’s eyes that he didn’t need to be told, that he somehow knew the awful truth; even then, all that Sam could do was utter a single word, a single name, pronounced with such defeat and fear that he knew Dean would nearly crumble at the sound.

 “Anna!”

After Mary Winchester was killed John searched for answers, eventually bringing him to Missouri Mosley. Missouri, a psychic, provided what answers she could to John. But she believed it was more than a random act of evil. Winchester was steadfast in his desire to understand what had taken his wife and he persisted in questioning Missouri. He wanted to understand what was ‘behind the curtain’. Missouri introduced him to Pastor Jim Murphy and The Brotherhood, a secretive group of men and women brought together by the age old battle of good and evil. Its actual beginnings were shrouded in mystery, but most believe its roots lay as far back as the time of the Knights of the Round Table. Jim Murphy saw a promise in John Winchester, a willingness to fight, a desire to protect the innocent. Although fueled by revenge for his wife’s death, John’s potential was undeniable. The pastor recognized an opportunity-a moment of chance he could not let slip through his fingers.  

 Around the same time Mary Winchester was murdered, Missouri had a vision of a young man-another powerful psychic. Caleb Reaves was thirteen and found himself facing murder charges for the horrific deaths of his foster parents. Police found the presence of sulfur a fact they discounted, but one that was of interest to Bobby Singer and Daniel Elkins. The boy was placed in a psychiatric institution where Jim Murphy sent Dr. Mackland Ames to interview him. Mackland Ames had only been involved in The Brotherhood for a short time, acquiring telekinetic abilities of his own after a car accident that left him in a coma for several months. The wealthy neurosurgeon became acquainted with Missouri after helping the FBI with a missing person’s case in Kansas. Missouri had also been brought in by the victim’s parents and the woman soon discovered an ally in Mackland. She in turn introduced him to Jim Murphy and The Brotherhood. Mackland followed Jim’s wishes, his interest in Caleb purely scientific. But the pastor had a soft spot for the boy, convincing Mackland he was a danger not only to himself, but to others, if he continued on untrained. The doctor became quickly ensnared by the traumatized teen, adopting him as his own son in later months. Daniel Elkins believed Caleb to be a risk. Elkins had researched Caleb’s family, traced his lineage back to a great grandfather, Noah Seaver. Seaver was a preacher in the late 1800’s who became consumed with the idea of immortality. He led his congregation, which historians would later relate to a cult into the art of necromancy. Seaver had enough information to be dangerous, using an antiquity of great power to summon a fierce fire demon. Members of The Brotherhood of that time believed the demon possessed Seaver to walk among the humans. The possessed man had a son with Seaver’s wife, Thomas Seaver. Half-demon, half human. Later, piecing together reports from the journals of past hunters, Elkins believed Thomas Seaver and his mother, Lily, were the only two people to survive a horrible fire at Noah’s church, reportedly started by the preacher himself. Twenty-two men, women and children, including Noah, were burned to death. But a credible witness swore he had seen Seaver’s wife leaving town the next day, her young son in tow. A Cecily Reaves came to the attention of The Brotherhood in later years when she and her daughter-in-law were found with their throats slit. Thomas Reaves was never heard from again and his young son, Isaac, was placed in an orphanage. 

Years later, Isaac murdered his wife, Amelia and killed himself. They were survived only by their six-year-old son, Caleb. Jim feared for the boy’s safety, knowing that hunters had a low tolerance for anything or anyone even remotely related to the dark-side of their world. He felt no hint of anything evil in the boy, but instead sensed a hurt and thirst for justice he had seen in John Winchester. It seemed fitting that he bring the two together to let John mentor the boy. And if it were true that both of them were linked to the monster that tore their lives apart, their bond might be the very thing to defeat the beast. Or at least the bond between Caleb and John’s young sons could. The timely meetings were too connected to be of mere chance. Jim sent Mackland Ames to coach John Winchester in the ways of The Brotherhood and despite their diverse backgrounds the men found common footing in their dedication to the fight. So much so that Jim as The Guardian chose Mackland to be The Scholar and John to be the Knight. This Triad made up of a preacher, a doctor, and a soldier was uncommon as usually The Triad grows up together and bonds over time. Jim vowed never to allow The Brotherhood to find itself in the same position again. He began to prepare the next generation’s Triad—Sam as The Scholar, Caleb as The Knight and Dean as The Guardian-in one possible scenario. The boys were shielded from their positions for the most part. 

Caleb knows he is the next Knight. Sam figured out he is the next Scholar by reading the hunters’ journals found in Jim’s library (nicknamed The Hunter’s Tomb) . Dean has also realized he is the next Guardian. Both Winchesters are purposefully remaining oblivious.

They have not been officially told by Mackland, who after the death of Jim and John still remains in power. That Triad will dissolve upon either his death or retirement. It will be up to him to decide when the next Triad should come to power. There is another faction within The Brotherhood which does not want the next generation to come to power. This faction is led by Griffin. He has set plans into motion to achieve those goals.

Every hero has a beginning.

All heroes walked along the stepping stones of life into prominence. All legends began with a single action, a single word. John Winchester was little known among the vast hunting community; however, one violent act, one distorted master plan, one talk with a psychic forever changed the course of the Winchester's lives. Driven with the overwhelming need of vengeance, John emerges into the hunting world with hushed whispers and legendary tales that rivaled those of Alexander the Great and King Arthur. No longer living in the shadow of better hunters, he would become known as the dark horse whose lively flame extinguished much too soon for the love of his oldest son.

The Winchester's story is more than the tragic death of a loved one, more than the defeat of the most powerful demon to walk among the soil of earth. The tale weaves through John's life from combat in a foreign country to the battlegrounds of the American back roads. It intertwines its way through heartbreaking love, loss of loved ones, slaying the unknown evils of the world, and building bonds that death cannot break.

In the end, the extraordinary legend of John Winchester would be forced into the footnotes of the great Demon War that would star two young boys who became men all too quickly. Two men who John would do anything to protect, anything to shield them from the harsh realities of life. Two men who to John always looked small and young in his eyes despite how tall they grew, how old they got.

The Dark Horse begins not with John Winchester - but rather with a family before him who faced the same horrors. Mary knew all too well about demons and ghost busting as she traveled through the American frontier with her older brother and uncle. The lifestyle she left would come crashing back into her and leave her husband and sons to follow in the footsteps that were laid before her years ago. With the death of John, Dean and Sam would then carry their families into the darkness to fight the evil - to follow in their father's stead, to become the next Dark Horses, and train the next generation of Winchesters to fight the good fight.

Two souls bonded together. Without one, there would not be the other...

Mostly AU, though I've taken canon and events from all four seasons, but they are used more as references, not true spoilers.

In this series Sam never dies, so there is no deal, therefore Dean never dies.

After the emotional upheaval of the siren incident, the brothers visit an old friend recently relocated to Georgia, in the hopes of gaining some perspective. They gain far more than they bargained for....

The brothers share many moments in their lives when they are totally dependent on each other. Sometimes they rebel, sometimes they accept the inevitable that it all boils down to. They only have each other and for that to last they need to...trust.

This series came to me as I was watching the 100th episode and thinking how far Dean and Sam have come in five seaons. Here's to five more!!!

The brothers have been through a lot and their love for each other and the interaction is what makes suprernatural GREAT!!! I hope I capture some of that here. I hope you enjoy!
